Environmental and Social Progress
Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa, Merlin Beach, in partnership with Scholars of Sustenance Foundation (SOS) Phuket since 2018, has been at the forefront of combating hunger and enhancing food security in Phuket. Embodying one of Marriott's core values of serving our world, we've worked closely with SOS, the first food rescue foundation in Thailand, to redirect high-quality surplus food from hotels, grocers, restaurants, and other suppliers to those in need. Our collaboration spans across Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, and more, aiming to improve food equity and reduce food loss. In the year from January 1 to December 31, 2023, we proudly contributed to serving 7,047 nutritious meals across the island, with plans to continue our efforts in the coming years.
Since November 2022, we have successfully eliminated 100% of single-use plastic water bottles throughout the hotel. In guest rooms and dining areas, we've transitioned to glass bottles, while at sensitive locations like the beach and pool bars, we've adopted aluminum cans. These cans are locally produced, with 50% of profits dedicated to environmental preservation efforts. Proceeds are directly contributed to charities we regularly support, including Scholars of Sustenance (SOS), PHBGTU, and SOC. Furthermore, we have introduced reusable bottles in every guest room, actively encouraging our guests to choose these eco-friendly options during their stay. This initiative not only advances our commitment to sustainability but also involves our guests in our efforts to protect the planet.
Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach is advancing sustainability efforts by introducing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across our properties. This initiative supports eco-friendly transportation, aligning with the hotel industry's goal to minimize its carbon footprint. EVs, known for emitting no exhaust gases, contribute to a cleaner environment and significantly reduce noise pollution. Our EV charging stations provide fast charging capabilities, catering not only to hotel guests but also to other visitors and local residents, promoting a greener, more sustainable future for all.
The Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach, has recently integrated solar panels into its infrastructure. This solar setup has a production capacity of 653 kWp, comprising a total of 1006 panels distributed across the rooftops of all four hotel buildings, covering an area of 3007 sqm. By harnessing solar power, the resort can generate clean energy for its operations, contributing to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The installation project commenced in October 2023, reaching completion and activation on April 9, 2024. Our hotel remains dedicated to conducting business in line with sustainable development principles, prioritizing environmental and community care alongside creating delightful experiences for our guests.
