I am a PhD candidate in philosophy at York University in Toronto, Canada. I completed both my MA in philosophy and my BS in animal biology at the University of Florida. My doctoral research is on the complexity of the social lives of nonhuman animals, and asks how this complexity should inform human-animal interactions. Current projects include looking at how we should understand an animal’s right to privacy and whether animals engage in social practices like gender.
While there are endless reasons why I am interested in these topics, one of my main sources of inspiration is my dog Socs. Socs is a five year old rescued boxer-mix who is a constant source of entertainment, humour, and thought-provoking behaviour.
