The passion of the lonely, quiet and bitter midget Finbar McBride (Peter Dinklake) is train. Fin inherits some lands with an old depot in the middle of nowhere in Newfoundland, New Jersey, when his partner also fanatic for trains and unique friend Henry Styles (Paul Benjamin) dies. He moves to the train station, where his neighbor is the talkative Cuban Joe Oramas (Bobby Cannavale), who is working in the hot-dog trailer of his sick father. He also meets Olivia Harris (Patricia Clarkson), a clumsy divorced woman who grieves the death of her beloved son Sam. After some days, the weird trio becomes friends.
"The Station Agent" is an original and nice tale of friendship, where three lonely and very different persons become friends and help to heal the wounds of the others. This low budget movie has a feel-good story without clichs, a great screenplay, it is very well directed and is mainly supported by Peter Dinklake, Bobby Cannavale and Patricia Clarkson. I particularly am very impressed with the quality of the last movies of this excellent actress, who is looking like wine and becoming better and better as years go by. Although I liked this movie a lot, in my opinion the position in IMDb among the top 250 (presently it is #233 ) is overrated. My vote is seven.

Fin McBride (Peter Dinklage) works in a Hoboken hobby train shop with his friend Henry. When Henry dies suddenly, the shop is sold and Henry leaves him an abandoned train station in rural New Jersey. He moves into the station to be alone. He is reluctantly pulled into the lives of talkative Joe Oramas (Bobby Cannavale) who is working his father's food truck and Olivia Harris (Patricia Clarkson) who almost runs him over, twice. She is separated from her husband and still struggling with her son's death from two years ago. He is also befriended by young black girl Cleo and librarian Emily (Michelle Williams).
It is a nice easy indie of these disparate characters coming together. It's probably the first staring role I saw with Dinklage. It's a quiet performance. Cannavale is his opposite. Clarkson is a little goofy at first but turns into a very compelling character. Williams is the young ingnue. The plot needs a more interesting narrative. There are no real stakes other than personal growth. I like these characters but there is no intensity.
