I am a Professor of Economics and Department Chair at the University of Pittsburgh, where I also serve as Core Faculty of the Center of Latin American Studies and the Global Studies Program. I received my BA from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and my PhD from the University of Rochester.I am an Associate Editor of the Journal of Macroeconomics, a member of the Advisory Board of the Carnegie-Rochester-NYU Conference, a member of the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Group, and a member of the Economics Research Network of the Colombia Central Bank. My research is at the intersection of macroeconomics and development. Recent work explores the notion of intergenerational substitution, the economic value of life, social mobility, and the determinants of cross-country differences in schooling and fertility. My research has appeared in various academic journals including the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Monetary Economics, the International Economic Review, the Economic Journal, and the Review of Economics and Statistics.
