I am the Interim Dean of the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh. I am also Professor of Economics and serve as Core Faculty in both the Center of Latin American Studies and the Global Studies Program. I was chair of the Department of Economics (2021-2024) and Director of Graduate Studies (2013-2016). I recieved the Tina & David Bellet Teaching Excellence Award in 2004, and the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2009.
I currently serve as Associate Editor of the Journal of Macroeconomics, and I am a member of the Advisory Board of the Carnegie-Rochester-NYU Conference, the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Group, and the Economics Research Network of the Central Bank of Colombia.
My research sits at the intersection of macroeconomics, development economics, and demographics. My work in development economics has examined the factors that shape differences in schooling, fertility, and life expectancy across countries, as well as the effects of international trade on inequality and productivity. My research in demographics examines fertility choice, investments in children, intergenerational transfers, the origins of population implosion, and the economic value of life. My work has appeared in leading journals including the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Monetary Economics, the International Economic Review, the Economic Journal, and the Review of Economics and Statistics.
I received a PhD from the University of Rochester and a BA (Summa Cum Laude) from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Prior to my doctoral studies I worked as Research Economist at Central Bank of Colombia (Banco de la República) and at the National Planning Department of Colombia.
