Starting from the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society’s Ocean Decade Initiative, this Forum intends to bring together representatives from Industry, Government, and Academia to discuss opportunities and new partnerships for using robots and advanced engineering solutions for the Ocean in real-world scenarios, leveraging new technological breakthroughs to overcome current barriers.
Renowned experts from Marine Science and Technology will participate in a roundtable on the upcoming Marine Robotics revolution to enhance Ocean knowledge and sustainable development.
“Proclaimed in 2017 by the United Nations General Assembly, the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (‘the Ocean Decade’) seeks to stimulate ocean science and knowledge generation to reverse the decline of the state of the ocean system and catalyze new opportunities for sustainable development of this massive marine ecosystem.
The Ocean Decade provides a convening framework for scientists and stakeholders from diverse sectors to develop the scientific knowledge and the partnerships needed to accelerate and harness advances in ocean science to better understand the ocean system and deliver science-based solutions to achieve the 2030 Agenda.”
The IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society is supporting the Ocean Decade Initiative with the development of dedicated activities.
Marine Robotics and Autonomous Systems can give a strong acceleration in enhancing the knowledge of the underwater environment and allow operations in remote areas. While in the past, the monitoring of the Ocean was based on long-term ship surveys and operations were mainly based on divers missions, nowadays, surface and underwater autonomous systems have made possible the development of new systems for sampling the oceans in a sustained way, with increased spatiotemporal resolution and at lower costs.
This will enhance real-time ocean monitoring, ecosystem preservation, early alarm systems to prevent environmental disasters and guarantee the development of human-marine activities in respect of Ocean health.
The panel will explore enabling technologies to achieve the outcomes of the Ocean Decade, in particular to generate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the ocean and to develop capacity to contribute to sustainable development solutions like autonomy, AI, bioinspired robotics.
The advancement of these technologies, new solutions and near-future challenges and implementations will be described and discussed by our renown panelists, concerning different real-world applications, such as
energy sector,
ocean-climate solutions,
environmental monitoring and preservation.
