The Discovery Challenge is an opportunity for students to write their own articles about recent marine biology studies and get their writing published on our internationally viewed website. Work on understanding scientific literature and share your analysis of experimental studies to get recognized!

Introduce the topic, define relevant terms, and set up your Review
Give a detailed but understandable overview of the study
What are the objectives of the study?
Summarize the experimental design and explain how it carries out the objectives
Summarize the results of the study and relate them to the objectives of the study
Explain the impacts of the study on current research in your topic and its potential applications
200-400 words
Explain complex key scientific terms
Cite all sources
The competition is free of cost and open to all grade levels

Find and interpret an original research paper (not a news article about a research paper!) that was published recently and write a Discovery Review
Prepare a relevant image (with caption) and create a title for your Review
Submit your Discovery Review here
You can enter up to 5 different submissions
You can submit your Discovery Review whenever it is finished
Join our email list to get notified of updates
Judging
Judging
All participants will have their work published on our website, given that it meets the requirements
We will announce the 1st-10th place winners, who will receive award certificates
1st-10th place winners will be invited to make a short video explaining their Discovery Reviews in greater depth
Based on video submissions, 3 out of 10 students will be invited to meet with Dr. Matthew Edwards, a marine biologist and professor of biology, through a call
Opportunities through the call: you can seek guidance on your own marine research project, discuss and potentially secure opportunities to work with Dr. Matthew Edwards, learn about general opportunities in the marine sciences, or ask for personal advice on pursuing marine science. It is up to you to determine how this call goes!
