Dr. Marie Martel: Bridging Brain, Body, and Action
Lecturer in Psychology | MoDI Lab | University of Surrey
Lecturer in Psychology | MoDI Lab | University of Surrey
I am a Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Surrey and a core member of the Motor Development and Impact (MoDI) Lab.
My research investigates how the brain represents the body and interacts with the world through tool use, motor imagery, and multisensory integration, with a focus on supporting the neurodivergent community and those with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD/Dyspraxia).
I am a strong advocate for Open Science, ensuring my data and methodologies are transparent and accessible to the global research community. I am committed to public engagement.
RESEARCH FOCUS:
• DCD / Dyspraxia & Neurodiversity •
• Motor Control & Motor Imagery across the lifespan • Multisensory Integration •
• Body Representations (Body Image & Body Schema) • Tool Use & Assistive Technology •
••• COMMITTED TO OPEN SCIENCE •••
With a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, my journey has spanned across the University of Lyon (Mentors: Alice Catherine Roy & Alessandro Farnè), Bielefeld University (Mentor: Tobias Heed), and Royal Holloway University of London (Mentor: Scott Glover) before arriving at Surrey.
By understanding how the brain controls the body or tools, we can develop better interventions for motor coordination challenges across the lifespan.
As a core member of the MoDI Lab, I contribute to a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to understanding how motor coordination affects life outcomes.
In my role as a Lecturer in Psychology, I am committed to fostering the next generation of Psychologists. More info here.
