I work on Educational Technology, Multimedia Signal Processing, Multimodal Human-Computer and Human-Robot Interaction, Computer Vision, Social Robotics, and Augmented and Virtual Reality. 

I am an expert at the European Commission on Robotics & Artificial Intelligence and an Academic Adviser to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.

I live in Tokyo, Japan.

2024

27 January 2024: abstract entitled "Showing the Benefits of Study Regularity to Learners for Keeping them Engaged" has been accepted for presentation at RIDE 2024, the 18th international Research in Distance Education and e-Learning RIDE conference, in London and online, March 14-15, 2024. 

16 January 2024: poster entitled "Ethical-tech and Inclusive Design as Learning Outcomes" as been accepted for presentation at the Queen Mary Festival of Education in March.

13 January 2024: poster entitled "Eye-Tracking to Study the Effect of Instructor’s Presence in Video Lectures: Experimental Design and Data Collection" with PhD student Yuli Sutoto Nugroho has been accepted for presentation at the 14th International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK24) to be held at the Kyoto International Conference Center in Kyoto, Japan, March 18-22, 2024. 

2023

30 November 2023: my paper entitled "‘Demonstrating the impact of study regularity on academic success using learning analytics" has been accepted as a research paper for the 14th International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK24) to be held at the Kyoto International Conference Center in Kyoto, Japan, from March 18-22, 2024. 

1 September 2023: my paper entitled "Methodology for the Participatory Design of a Learner-Facing Analytics Dashboard" has been accepted for presentation at ICCE2023 (the 31st International Conference on Computers in Education), Matsue, Shimane, Japan, 4-8 December 2023. 

1 September 2023: I have been invited to the role of General Chair for iLRN2024, which will be held online and in VR  (3-5 June 2024) and in Glasgow, Scotland (10-13 June 2024)!

28 June 2023: Sarune Savickaite and I received an Outstanding Contribution to Pedagogy Award for our iLRN2023 workshop on inclusivity and accessibility!

13 June 2023: my paper entitled "Co-creation and Learner Personas Applied to the Inclusive Design of a Learning Analytics Dashboard", co-authored with Yingting Hao (BUPT) has been accepted for presentation at EDI2023, the "Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Educational Technology Research and Development" (EDI in EdTech R&D) workshop, as part of the 24th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education, AIED 2023, Tokyo, Japan, 3-7 July 2023. https://zenodo.org/communities/aied_edi2023/?page=1&size=20 .

12 June 2023: I co-organised with colleagues in the Science and Engineering Faculty a workshop sponsored by CAISE (Centre for Academic Inclusion in Science and Engineering) on co-creation. I presented a joint project on student-staff co-creation of VR an AR learning resources.

9 May 2023: The workshop I organise with Sarune Savickaite (Glasgow University) on Immersive Learning and Inclusivity has been announced as an iLRN2023 featured workshop! It will be held in San Luis Obispo, California, on 28th June.

20 April 2023: CAISE (Centre for Academic Inclusion in Science and Engineering), of which I am deputy director for scholarship, was showcased at the QMUL Festival of Education 2023.

19 April 2023: I gave a lightning talk on "Using Personas as an Inclusion Tool", at the QMUL Festival of Education 2023.

18 April 2023: I presented the EECS Educational Scholarship Centre (ESC), which I established in 2022, at the workshop on "Creating and supporting disciplinary scholarship communities", as part of the QMUL Festival of Education 2023.

2022

15 December 2022: I have become an Academic Adviser to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC).

11 November 2022: I was the internal examiner of a successful PhD thesis on the impacts of embodied sensorimotor interactions in immersive virtual reality for second language learning. 

7 October 2022: I have been invited to join the organising committee of AIED2023 as Posters and Late Breaking Results co-chair.

5 October 2022: The first meeting of the iLRN2023 conference organising committee has taken place. I am Program Chair of iLRN for the 2nd year.

3 October 2022: I was the external examiner (University College Dublin) of a successful PhD thesis on the integration of kinesthetic learning and intelligent agents in immersive learning environments.

1 September 2022: I am very pleased to share the official announcement of a new Centre dedicated to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary U. of London, which I have initiated 6 months ago and will lead.

22 July 2022: paper entitled "Online Learners’ Cognitive-Affective States Awareness to support Wellbeing and Self-Regulation Skills" co-authored with Jacqueline Urakami and Gentiane Venture has been accepted for presentation at HRI4Wellbeing (Human-Robot Interaction for Wellbeing workshop, as part of the IEEE International Conference on Robot & Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN 2022)), in Naples and online, 2 September 2022.

13 July 2022: I received the best presentation award at BCS HCI 2022 for the paper: Robot public speakers’ effect on audience affective reaction and attention allocation!

6 June 2022: paper entitled "Measuring students’ self-regulated learning skills from their digital traces and learning pathways" has been accepted for presentation at EC-TEL 2022 (17th European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning) in Toulouse, France, 12-16 September 2022.

13 April 2022: paper entitled "Developing Materials Science Experiments Using Augmented Reality—How Much Reality is Needed?" co-authored with Wenjing Ye (BUPT/QMUL), and Maria Romero-Gonzalez (QMUL) has been accepted for presentation at iLRN 2022 (8th International Conference of the Immersive Learning Research Network).

February 2022: I am starting a new role as deputy director for Scholarship in the Centre for Academic Inclusion in Science and Engineering (CAISE) in the S&E Faculty at QMUL.

February 2022: I have been elevated to the grade of IEEE Senior member.

17 November 2021: paper entitled "Can robots be good public speakers?" co-authored with Gentiane Venture (TUAT), Jacqueline Urakami (TIT) and Bastien Muraccioli (Montpellier) has been accepted for presentation at TEI 2022 (16th ACM International Conference on Tangible Embedded and Embodied Interaction).

18 October 2021: I have been offered the role of Program Chair (Academic Stream) for the iLRN 2022 conference.  

19 July 2021: paper co-authored with Maria Romero-Gonzalez entitled "Computer and Materials Sciences convergence for the creation of technology-based learning resources and new curriculum developments" has been accepted for presentation at the IEEE Frontiers in Education 2021 conference in Lincoln, USA!

22 April 2021: paper entitled "Teaching Invisible Phenomena and Virtual Experiments: Immersion or Augmentation? " has been accepted for presentation at the 7th International Conference of the Immersive Learning Network (iLRN 2021)  in the work-in-progress paper category.

8 March 2021: presented a seminar on VR and AR and student-staff partnerships at the Queen Mary Festival of Education.

20 January 2021: received a Faculty Award for Internationalisation in recognition for setting up  with Prof. Gentiane Venture at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, a collaboration which gives QMUL/BUPT JP students the opportunity to do research on intelligent robotics in Japan.

7 January 2021: recorded an invited Immersive Learning Research Network podcast (https://versatilist.podomatic.com/) with Maria Romero-Gonzalez. We discuss our work on student-staff co-creation of virtual and augmented reality learning resources.
