VISION, INNOVATION AND PASSION, THE V.I.P. ATTRIBUTES
OF TRANSFORMATIONAL EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP
Edition #1 - January 2026
January 30, 2026
After several years of being selected and invited as a Guest Speaker to give presentations on my research, I found that Vision, Innovation, and Passion continued to emerge as paramount themes. I not only loved the topics, but I realized that I lived them. It was easy and fun to share the stories. The next step wasn’t planned but it made all the sense in the world. So, I decided to edit a leadership series. Not just one book but three volumes addressing each attribute with the attention each one deserved.
Agreeing to work with IGI-Global Publishing Company, in a six-month time frame, I collaborated with more than 100 authors from 10 countries on 5 continents! The scholarly research was tremendously illuminating. I was able to read each chapter and as I edited the studies, I learned so much! What a treat to have a true global perspective to enhance my personal interests. The Trilogy Leadership Series includes the following three books:
The Value of Vision in Leadership
The Impact of Innovation in Leadership
The Purpose of Passion in Leadership
As the very proud editor, I am honored to say that each of the three volumes received Scopus Index status! While this journey is not yet over, I will be sharing some of the nuggets from my personal presentations about the themes. I hope you enjoy and more than anything - may your soul be touched and filled with an overflowing abundance of Vision, Innovation, and Passion.
Let’s begin with this question: How do we achieve the Next Level, far ABOVE & BEYOND any standard of measure, exceeding the limitations and expectations of the status quo?
Educational leadership in the 21st century demands more than competence, compliance, or continuation of what has always been done. Today’s leaders are called to go far ABOVE & BEYOND any standard of measure, exceeding the limitations and expectations of the status quo. In an era marked by rapid change, complex challenges, and evolving learner needs, leadership must be bold, intentional, and deeply human. This is where Vision, Innovation, and Passion, the V.I.P. attributes become essential for educational leaders aspiring to go to the NEXT LEVEL.
These three attributes are not abstract ideals; they are actionable commitments that shape how leaders think, lead, and influence systems. Vision provides direction, Innovation fuels transformation, and Passion sustains purpose. Together, they create leadership that is impactful, inclusive, and enduring.
VISION: Voice, Visibility, and Value All Lead to Victory
At the NEXT LEVEL of leadership, Vision is not simply about having an idea, it is about giving that idea a voice, making it visible, and ensuring it creates value. Vision begins with clarity of purpose and the courage to articulate where the organization is going and why it matters. Leaders who lead with vision understand that silence creates confusion, while voice creates alignment.
Voice gives vision life. When leaders consistently communicate expectations, beliefs, and goals, they empower others to see themselves as part of the larger mission. Visibility ensures that vision is not hidden in strategic plans or mission statements, but actively modeled through decisions, behaviors, and priorities. Value is realized when vision translates into improved outcomes for students, educators, and communities.
When voice, visibility, and value align, vision leads to victory. Victory is not defined by accolades or titles, but by sustainable success, stronger systems, empowered people, and measurable progress. Visionary leaders exceed the limitations of the status quo by daring to imagine what could be, then committing to make it real.
However, vision alone is not enough. A clear destination without a plan for movement results in stagnation. This is where leadership must shift from seeing to doing, from imagining to implementing. To truly go ABOVE & BEYOND, leaders must embrace Innovation as the bridge between vision and transformation.
INNOVATION: Intentional Actions, Strategic Initiatives, and Inspiration Ignite the Fire in the Soul
Innovation is often misunderstood as novelty or technology-driven change. At the NEXT LEVEL, innovation is about being intentional, launching meaningful initiatives, and creating conditions that inspire, igniting the fire in the soul of those you lead. Innovation requires leaders to challenge assumptions, question outdated practices, and redesign systems with purpose.
Intentional leadership ensures that innovation is not reactive, but strategic. Every initiative is aligned with vision and rooted in the real needs of learners and educators. Innovative leaders understand that change for the sake of change creates fatigue, while intentional innovation creates momentum.
Initiatives bring innovation to life. Whether redesigning curriculum, reimagining professional learning, or restructuring leadership teams, initiatives signal commitment to progress. Most importantly, innovation must inspire. When leaders inspire, they ignite passion, creativity, and ownership in others. They empower people to see themselves as contributors, not just implementers.
When innovation inspires, it ignites the fire in the soul, a fire that fuels resilience, risk-taking, and belief in what is possible beyond current limitations.
Yet even the most innovative systems can falter without the emotional and moral energy needed to sustain change. Transformation is not a sprint; it is a journey. To maintain momentum and avoid burnout, leadership must be grounded in Passion, the force that keeps purpose alive.
PASSION: Purpose, Progression, and People Before Programs - Create Perspective
At the NEXT LEVEL, Passion is not performative enthusiasm; it is deeply rooted purpose. Passion reminds leaders why they chose education, why the work matters, and who it ultimately serves. Purpose anchors leadership during moments of resistance, challenge, and uncertainty.
Progression reflects a commitment to growth, personal, professional, and organizational. Passionate leaders embrace continuous learning and understand that progress is not linear. They measure success not only by outcomes, but by improvement, reflection, and adaptability.
Most critically, passionate leadership places people before programs, creating perspective. Systems do not change unless people do. When leaders prioritize relationships, trust, and well-being, programs become more effective and sustainable. Perspective allows leaders to see beyond policies and procedures to the human impact of every decision.
Purpose, progression, and people-centered leadership transform passion into perspective, a lens through which leaders navigate complexity with empathy and integrity.
Bringing the V.I.P. Attributes Together
Vision, Innovation, and Passion are not isolated traits; they are interconnected forces. Vision sets the direction, Innovation drives the movement, and Passion sustains the journey. Together, they empower educational leaders to exceed expectations, dismantle outdated norms, and reimagine what leadership can be.
Leaders who embody the V.I.P. attributes do not settle for compliance, they pursue excellence. They do not accept limitations, they redefine possibilities. They do not lead from position alone; they lead from purpose.
Conclusion: Leading Far ABOVE & BEYOND the Status Quo
To go to the NEXT LEVEL in educational leadership requires courage, clarity, and conviction. It requires leaders who are willing to go far ABOVE & BEYOND any standard of measure, exceeding the limitations and expectations of the status quo. Vision provides the roadmap, Innovation fuels the transformation, and Passion ensures the work remains human-centered and impactful.
The future of education depends on leaders who are willing to lead differently, leaders who speak with voice, lead with intention, and act with purpose. When educational leaders embrace Vision, Innovation, and Passion as their V.I.P. attributes, they do more than manage systems, they transform lives, institutions, and the future of learning itself.

💎 Embrace the full journey...
💎 Transform the Pressure into Brilliance 💎 Learn from the Process 💎 & Enjoy the Promise 💎
💎 To shine bright like a diamond is not to live without pressure, it is to be transformed by it. Diamonds are not created in comfort; they are formed under intense heat, weight, and time. In much the same way, women are shaped through challenge, perseverance, and resilience. The journey is rarely linear, often demanding courage in moments when giving up might feel easier. Yet it is precisely within these moments that true brilliance is revealed.
💎 Failure, though often feared, is an inevitable part of growth. It is not a final outcome, nor is it a defining label. Failure is feedback. It is the process of redesign, an opportunity to pause, reassess, and reimagine what is possible. Each setback offers insight, each misstep provides data, and each disappointment carries the potential to sharpen clarity and strengthen resolve. When viewed through this lens, failure becomes not an endpoint, but a pivot point.
💎 Transparency is essential in this process. When women lead, learn, and live transparently, they give themselves permission to be real rather than perfect. Transparency allows others to see the full journey, the effort behind the success, the lessons behind the leadership, and the humanity behind the title. It builds trust, fosters connection, and dismantles unrealistic expectations. By being honest about challenges and growth, women create spaces where authenticity is valued and where others feel safe to step forward as their true selves.
💎 Preparation plays a critical role in transformation. Preparation is not perfection; it is readiness. It is the commitment to show up informed, equipped, and willing to learn. Women who prepare intentionally, through learning, mentorship, reflection, and practice, build confidence that is grounded, not fragile. Preparation turns doubt into discipline and fear into focus. It allows women to walk into rooms not asking for permission, but owning their presence.
💎 Vulnerability strengthens that presence. Vulnerability is not weakness; it is courage in its most honest form. It is the willingness to be seen, to admit uncertainty, and to grow in public. When women embrace vulnerability, they replace comparison with compassion and isolation with community. Vulnerability transforms leadership into relationship and influence into impact. It reminds women that strength and softness can, and should, coexist.
💎 Refinement is where growth becomes visible. Just as a diamond is cut and polished to reveal its brilliance, women refine their voices, skills, and leadership through experience. Refinement requires humility, patience, and self-awareness. It asks for honest reflection: What worked? What didn’t? What needs to change? Through refinement, women learn to let go of what no longer serves them and to elevate what aligns with their purpose. This process does not diminish value, it amplifies it.
💎 To shine bright like a diamond is to embrace the full journey: the pressure, the process, and the promise. It is to understand that resilience is not about avoiding struggle, but about rising through it with intention. Women who shine do not wait for perfect conditions; they create momentum despite uncertainty. They honor their stories, including the chapters marked by challenge, knowing those pages contribute to their strength.
💎 Ultimately, shining is an act of courage. It is choosing visibility over silence, growth over fear, and purpose over perfection. When women allow themselves to shine, authentically, confidently, and unapologetically, they not only illuminate their own paths, but light the way for others.
💎 Keep shining, and know that your brilliance gives others permission to do the same! 💎

Thinking
I have been doing a lot of thinking... about thinking. Have you ever found yourself very aware of your thoughts? That is me, and very often. You wonder why you are thinking about certain things. I don't mean thinking about a situation that requires immediate attention, but rather, random thoughts that you can play with, move around in your mind, and try to find a place to keep them. Since this is a common activity of mine, I do have a place for my thoughts. But before I let you know where I keep them, I would like to share my thought process.
Thought Process
First, I THINK about things for a while. Then, I wonder why I am thinking about them. Sometimes I question if they are even my business. I also expect that if what I am thinking about is somewhat of a problem, I should find a solution... since I am thinking about it. After I think, for a long time, I then begin to ORGANIZE the thoughts in my head. Can you even imagine? The organization process determines where I should place each thought or scenario. This often involves much moving around to see where each thought best fits. Finally, after the organization process, comes the EXECUTION. It is here that I decide what will be done with each thought - how my thoughts will be applied when needed. As I conclude thinking and my thought process, I strategically find a safe-resting place, a home, for each thought.
From when I was a very young child, I always thought of my mind as a playground. I really had a lot of fun thinking about all sorts of things; it was a happy thing to do. Then, as I got a little older, I knew that I had a treasure chest in addition to the playground. The treasure chest holds and symbolizes the important, heartfelt thoughts, people, and experiences that deeply touched my soul. That is such a wonderful place to visit. And finally, as an adult, there were other things that I thought about; nothing of any great importance to mention - just other things, and many times, there are too many other things, but that is what happens. The other things go into a section called files. So all of my thoughts are carefully located in either the playground of my mind, the treasure chest of my heart, or the files - just the files.
Reflecting
Reflecting on my thought process, I have come to this conclusion; I divided the process into three sections.
Thinking is 75% of the time
Organizing is 15-20% of the time
Executing is 5-10% of the time
I understand this to be true in my case. The more I think, the easier my application becomes. Timewise, it has been efficient and many times successful. But more importantly, what I learned about this Thinking about my thinking, is that I am extremely happy with the playground in my mind and the treasure chest because they both fulfill my needs. I absolutely have to have fun, and I need those heartfelt, soul-touching experinces and people in my life. But, the other things, that are in the files, well they might just need to be deleted ASAP so I can continue on my journey enjoying the playground in my mind and the treasure chest. How about you - what is your thought process and how do you rationalize or categorize your thinking? And yes I do know - that some may call this overthinking! Let me know your thoughts on Twitter @DrMariaP_Testa
Sending you lots of good thoughts!
Happy Thinking!

As every season must end, there are major takeaways we all experience. Some are what "To do", and others are what "Not to do". Although we try to focus on the "what To dos", there is great value and learning which comes from the "what Not to dos".
We grow through the "what Not to dos" simply because - we are still standing! Those experiences may not always have been pleasant, expected, or well-received, and yet... here we are! The journey continues and another season is before us.
Looking back, one might reflect on those positive experiences, and say, "that part of the journey kept me engaged, and empowered me for success"! Success can only be determined and illuminated in the light of failure. Many failures could lead to: success, the change of trajectory, readjustment of position, and many more - pick one! Just don't give up! Keep on!
Whatever season you might be going through, or have endured, use that to thrust you into your future, count it toward growth, moving forward, and be progressive in thinking.
Success is ~ the light in the darkness, and it is often compared to the stars in a dark sky. Remember, while reflecting on your most recent season, just as those stars shine bright against the darkest background, there is always room for more light to emerge!

Student Owned =Ultimate Learning

If we want students to really get excited about learning, about the learning that is directly related to them, to impact their lives, and to remain with them as a sustainable force, we have to make a shift. For years schools have been talking about how we should move students from compliance to engagement. While compliance tells students what they need to learn because it was proven to be successful in the past, engagement gets students excited.
But what is it they should be excited about - is it the learning standards?
In the Innovators' Mindset podcast, George Couros and AJ Juliani discussed the next necessary shift in education. One of the highlights mentioned in the podcast was that in order to move students from engagement to empowerment, students need to own their learning. When students own their learning, that shift happens from engagement to empowerment.
Empowered students are excited about their future; their interests and their passion drives the learning. They are not just excited for learning when they are in school, but for the learning that continues outside of school and after they leave school!
By listening to students' voices, and giving them choices, students experience leaving what is "required" and enter what is "desired". The student owned learning creates the passion and excitement which makes the connection to the students' future. It makes sense to me - find out what they like and are interested in, and then, together, design a way to implement that into a plan that makes their journey look like this...
from Compliance=REQUIRED, to Engagement, to Empowerment=DESIRED.

It's About the Connection

According to Angela Duckworth, "Grit" is described as the power of passion and perseverance. In 2013, Angela Duckworth gave a Ted Talk explaining how Grit was a predictor of success. She came to her conclusion after studying numerous contexts. However, she found that little was known about how to foster Grit in students. Since that Ted Talk, recent research indicated that although Grit was important, it wasn't the only characteristic that influenced student learning. Digital Promise conducted further research in the learning sciences, and reported ten key principles, which influenced student learning. I decided to take a look at all ten of those principles, and discuss just one principle, and what it means to me.
The learning principle that I am going to focus on is, "Children learn best when they feel safe and connected." While all of the other principles are important, this one stands out to me. You will have to read about them for yourself to decide which one or two might jump out at you! But, for my students and I, we start here. It’s all about making a connection. That point of contact is the start. Then, you can build trust. From trust, a relationship is formed. It is a process, but the journey is worth it. Once you establish a relationship, things you never imagined will begin to happen! It is then, that the students' will begin to soar to new heights in their learning! That just might be a level beyond measure!
Continuing on the journey, as the roads change, so will the relationships. Be ready for that. Some students may get off of their ride a little early, there is always the possibility that they advanced, how great is that! Other students might slow down and require more frequent visits to those rest stops along the way, that could make the journey longer. The GPS learning roadmap, knows many different routes to travel to arrive at the same destination. It also knows how to get back on track from most detours. Our part is to know the process and trust it, to be resourceful and consistent, and to expect to finish the course!
At the end of my first-year teaching, I did not want to lose those kids. A colleague of mine said, "Oh, they didn't tell you either?" I said, "tell me what"? She said, "they never tell you that after all you go through the whole year: the good, the bad, and the ugly, that you fall in love with them… and then you have to let them go". I knew that I loved kids, but I never thought about how I would feel about them leaving. There is a saying, Mothers hold a child's hand for a short while but their hearts forever. I believe there are times that saying holds true for teachers and students as well. I often remind myself, that on their journey, although everyone's ETA is different; and some do get lost along the way, while the GPS learning roadmap is a tremendously illuminating resource, there is nothing like that connection between teacher and the student… It’s about the connection.
