Welcome!

I am a Research Fellow in Economic History at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, Italy.

My Ph.D. thesis, supervised by Alessandro Nuvolari, investigated the causes and consequences of Italian regional divides. To this end, I used new genealogical data to measure the human capital and social mobility in the run up to the Unification of 1861. I also used new patent data to study the effect of access to the railway infrastructure on Italian innovation. I then relied on biographical data to look at the association between foreign technology transfer and domestic quality of invention.

A secondary part of my research investigates the nexus between Imperialism, maritime technology and the economy of Ancient Mediterranean societies. In doing so, I interact historical with philological and archaeological approaches.

Research interests

Education and social mobility; technological transfer, innovation and scientific diffusion; history and philosophy of science.
