A Dictionary of useful Research Phrases:
"It has long been known...": I didn't look up the original reference.
"A definite trend is evident...": This data is practically meaningless.
"While it has not been possible to provide definite answers to these questions...": An unsuccessful experiment, but there is still hope to get it published.
"It is hoped that this study will stimulate further investigation in this field": This is a lousy paper but so are the others on this miserable topic.
"Three of the samples were chosen for a detailed study": The results of the others did not make any sense.
"Typical results are shown": The best results are shown.
"These results will be shown in a subsequent report": I might get around to this if I'm pushed.
"The most reliable results are those obtained by Jones": Jones was my PhD supervisor.
"It is believed...": I think...
"It is generally believed...": A couple of other guys think so, too.
"We strongly believe...": My advisor believes...
"Correct within an order of magnitude": Wrong.
"Thanks are due to Ann Miller for assistance with the experiment and to Bob Brown for valuable discussions": Ann did the work and Bob explained to me what it meant.
"The solution exists and is unique": I couldn't find it.
"A formal demonstration of this result is beyond the scope of this paper": I don't know how to do it.
