The 21st annual contest for the casual hoops fan
march2madness 2024-25 Entry DEADLINE is 5pm on Monday December 2, 2024.
(March 8, 2024) There is one shining moment for some teams, but for the 2024 UConn Huskies there were six dominant games. Their 75-60 thrashing of Purdue on Monday night increased their tournament point differential to a record +140 points. Dan Hurley squad won each game by 13+ and has now covered all 12 games during this back to back championship run. The UConn plan was not to double team Zach Edey, who scored 37 points and 10 rebounds, but to stop the Boilermakers sharp shooters from hitting threes. That sure worked, as Purdue goes 1 for 7 from behind the arch. UConn was only 6 of 22 from behind the arch, but that is a 15 point difference which matched the game score. Tristen Newton was special on this night for a second straight year, taking home back to back championships on a 20 pts, 5 reb,7 ast night. A sensational season for this Huskie team.
Unlike the National Championship Game, march2madness was as close as it gets. Jerry Johnson came from behind to catch Chris Clark at the wire. They end up tied with 345.5 points. Unfortunately for Chris, Jerry holds the tiebreaker being -2.5 back on Selection Sunday, while Chris was -16.5 back. Therefore, Jerry Johnson takes home the first place prize of $3300. Jerry's love of the game came playing basketball for Eastern High School in Russellville, OH and many years late is retired and lives in Mt Carmel, OH. His favorite moment was Virginia losing, making his decision to replace the Cavilers with McNeese a wash. Chris Clark will take home $660 for second place. Chris also lives in the Cincinnati area. Chris and I played men's slow-pitch softball together for years. Another one of my slow-pitch buddies is Larry Prine who took held on to take 5th place of $88. In Third place is Daniel Reed of Mt Orab, OH who retired from Western Brown LSD a few years ago. Daniel will take home $220 for third place. Fourth place and our only non-Ohio resident is Silvio Bohannon. Silvio vaulted up the standings with NC State's 59+ tournament points and finished off the night as the second highest UConn finisher. Silvio will take home $132.
This year, the perfect sheet would have been Duke, UConn, Colorado, San Diego State, North Carolina, Alabama, Clemson, and NC State. It has been enjoyable. I hope to see everyone back again next season for year 23 of march2madness.
(March 8, 2024) It all gets decided tonight as the best two teams in the country tip-off with march2madness on the line. Purdue brings with it, the two time player of the year in Zach Edey. He is looking to be the first Player of the Year to hoist the championship trophy since Jalen Brunson in 2018, and the first center to do it since Anthony Davis in 2012. On the opposite side of the court is the Coach of the Year in Dan Hurley and his UConn Huskies, as they look to become the first repeat champions since Florida in 2006-07. For march2madness, we are looking at a new name to add to our Hall of Champions. If Purdue wins tonight, Chris Clark, who took over the lead will take home the 2024 m2m crown, however, a UConn win gives Jerry Johnson just enough to pull into a tie with Chris. Jerry would win the tiebreaker since his entry was in third place on Selection Sunday. This would be our first ever first place tie if this where to happen. UConn has a slight edge with excellent backcourt of Newton, Spencer and Castle, while the Edey and Kaufmann-Renn give the Boilermakers an edge on the inside. In a year where we saw a record of Top 5 teams lose to unranked teams, we get the best two teams playing on Monday night. Enjoy the game everyone.
(March 31, 2024) Roll Tide! Woof! Boiler Up! Red and White! Which of these are your favorite chants next week in Phoenix? Mark Sears continuing his dominate second halves, Cam Spencer giving the Huskies the outside game in clutch situations, DJ Burns making Duke look like high schoolers, or Zach Edey leading the way with a career high 40 point game. Which of these four are most likely to continue their hot run from the Elite Eight, cut down the nets, and take home MOP? So much is on the line next weekend in Phoenix for these four teams, as well as many march2madness entries.
Chris Clark continues to be slotted on the top line, but had one of his three remaining teams knock off another when Alabama knocked off Clemson. However, his two remaining teams are on opposite sides of the bracket with Purdue and Alabama. Daniel Reed, Larry Prine and Ray Smith are in second thru fourth but have the same teams left. Jerry Johnson is in fifth place and is the highest team with UConn. Silvio Bohannon is 42 points back and has UConn and one of only two entries to pick up NC State as their Cinderella. NC State has score 58 tournament points which is currently more than any team has scored the entire season. UConn is next with 56.5 points.
I can say after a crazy year of upsets, the best four teams in March are playing in the Final Four and I cannot wait to watch. We haven't had many buzzer beaters in this tournament, it would be exciting if it happens a couple times next week. Enjoy the Final Four and check back next Tuesday for the final march2madness results.
(March 30, 2024) March2madness is now down to the Elite Eight and everything is still up in the air. Chris Clark held on to the top slot with Purdue, Clemson and Alabama all advancing. Purdue knocked off Gonzaga for the second time this season. After they met in Maui, the next day the Boilermakers squared off against Tennessee. It just so happens that they will face the Vols on Easter Sunday. Alabama outlasted UNC in a game that felt like a Final Four matchup over a Sweet 16. RJ Davis had an off night going 0-9 from behind the arc, and Alabama's Grant Nelson took over down the stretch going 24 pts 12 boards. And talking about off nights, former UNC guard Caleb Love was off the same night, going 0-9 as Arizona's dance ended at the hands of Clemson. Clemson vs Alabama on Saturday giving Chris Clark at least one team in the Final Four. It likely will come down to who wins the championship. In second place is Larry Prine, who was the leader after the first round and Daniel Reed. While they both are up top with Duke, Larry has Illinois to make some noise while Daniel will ROLL TIDE. Our top selection with UConn is Jerry Johnson at -26 points. the Huskies are playing the best basketball in the tournament but Coach Hurley will still spin this comment as getting NO RESPECT. Nelson Prosper is always hanging around towards the end of the tournament. This year he is the highest with NC State. Although 28 points back, another Wolfpack Cinderella run will quickly vault him over the top. NC State now has 43 tournament points and everyone except Nelson and Will Buck missed out on those points. Another surprise is Clemson, who no one took as a Cinderella team. However, they are in the 1989 grouping. Clark, Prosper and Brian Paschen all selected at the beginning of the year and should finish in the money upon a Tiger's run. Clemson vs Alabama has to have Dabo Sweeney and Nick Saban in attendance, right? Dan Lenihan is -53 pts but is the top entry with the Vols and has three teams still left. The winning path is still rather cloudy, but it will clear up after Sunday. Good luck all.
(March 25, 2024) The round of 32 did not provide all the upsets of last year's tournament, with #6 seed Clemson beating #3 seed Baylor being the biggest upset. What we did get was some late night games as both games in the Indianapolis session went overtime on Saturday. This is the first time both games at a single location went into overtime in over thirty years. Then Houston had to secure an overtime win over a tough Buzz Williams Texas A&M team on Sunday night from the FedEx Forum. The best story of the past two weeks continues to be NC State, as Kevin Keats has went from a coach on the hot seat to raking in $175,000 in bonuses and locked up a two year extension worth an additional $400,000.
The march2madness standings took another wild swing in round two, as those with Gonzaga and San Diego State made a charge in a season that charges don't get called. Chris Clark has both of these team and a 9.5 point lead going into the Sweet 16. Then there are 25 sheets within 20 points of each other. What could shake up the standings more. How about a deep run from Marquette, Iowa State, or NC State. I don't think this contest has been this wide open heading into the Sweet 16 in quite some time. This weekend should be exciting and never wrecking for so many of you. At 50+ back and losing most of my teams, I will just enjoy the games.
(March 23, 2024) A heartbreaking loss in the Pac-12 tournament put the Buffalos into the first four game were they would have to earn their way onto the bracket vs Boise State. They came away from Dayton with a 60-53 point victory over Boise State and more importantly 10 points. Colorado advanced to a matchup against the Florida Gators which turned into one of the more entertaining games of the first round. Florida was up 10 points in the first half, but Simpson's step back at the buzzer tied the score up a 45 each heading into the locker room. Florida coach Todd Golden got a technical called against him with 7:44 left which turned into a 5 point play putting the Buffalos up ten points. They stretched the lead to 94-81 with 4:28 remaining, but then thing unraveled as Walter Clayton Jr took over the game. He scored the last 16 points down the stretch including 3 three pointers in the last 1:12 to tie up the score. However, it was KJ Simpson again, rattling in a baseline shot with 2 second left to win a thriller 102-100. It has been more than a decade since both teams have topped the century mark in a NCAA tourney game.
The win doubled up Colorado's tourney points to 20 entering the round of 32. This is important as if you look at the march2madness standings, the top 20 all have Colorado as their shake-it off team. Colorado was also selected as a Cinderella in a handful of entries. Larry Prine has made the move to the top of everchanging leaderboard. It should be a fun second round. Let's see if other surprise teams such as Yale, Duquesne, Grand Canyon, and Oakland can continue their Cinderella runs. I was surprised by Yale's comback against Auburn as they looked dead in the water. Oakland's win over UK may have surprised a few, but fans in Lexington were not and are angry after the Wildcats continue their run of poor tournament performances.
Take a look at the scoreboard and enjoy this weekend's second round action. I think the Dayton Flyers will give Arizona all they can handle today, sending the Wildcats packing. UNC vs Michigan State seems like a good matchup, but both teams are capable of laying an egg. I don't know who wins, but I would not expect a close game.
My Cinderella Picks: (imcommish) Boise State-in, Memphis-out (bottomfeeder) Washington State-in, Ohio State-out
A wild Championship Week scrambled the march2madness standings. My category selections did not fair as well as everyone's WILDCARD teams. The wildcards accounted for 11 automatic qualifiers and 7 at-large bids. These teams will be key in crowning a march2madness champion. Currently, Gary Cootway and Karl Hoalst have now taken over the top line. I would expect this year's NCAA tournament to be similar to last years where we ended up with UConn, FAU, Miami, and SDSU in the Final Four. If so, there is plenty of opportunity to make up 50+ points by landing the correct Cinderella team. At this time each entry will be allowed to replace one of their teams for a Cinderella team. the entry will maintain the dropped team's points to date, but will receive tournament points from the Cinderella team. Tournament points are awarded based on the seed number. A #12 seed teams receives 12 points for each win (in addition to bonus points for Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final Four, Final).
Last year the online submission of the Cinderella worked well. It is set up just like the form you entered at the beginning of the season. You just type in your name, email, Cinderella, and Dropped team. The form will send you a confirmation upon completion.
Just click on the "SUBMIT CINDERELLA" link to the left or below.

1) Mountain West/Best/Mess: The Mountain West conference has six teams ranked inside the Top 35 in the NET rankings, matched only by the Big 12. Boise State survived overtime last night vs SDSU to pull within a half game of conference leader Utah State. The Aggies need a win today to be crowned regular season champs, but that will not be easy against a Lobos team that beat them by double digits at The Pit back in February. A loss could also pave the way for Nevada or UNLV to sneak into a three way share of the Mountain West Title. Those two red-hot teams will face off against each other tonight.
2) The Rivalry: Duke will try to avenge their February loss to UNC at 6:30EST inside Cameron Indoor. The Cameron Crazies will be rocking the house, as a victory over the Tar Heels will pull them into a share of the ACC title.
3) 3-Pointers: Purdue, St Mary's, UConn, Tennessee, Arizona, and a few others have all earned 3 points for winning their conference already. Those points will be awarded on the standings board and posted on Monday night. The ACC, A-10, Big 12, and Ivy league titles will be decided today.
4) Running of the Bulls: The American Athletic Conference has a new look this year, but everyone expected FAU, Memphis, and SMU to battle it out. However, it is Amir Abdur-Rahim's South Florida Bulls that ran away with the conference. On a 15 game win streak, and 16-1 in the AAC.
5)Bubble Watch: Teams that need to win today to keep their bubble from popping include Villanova, St Johns, New Mexico, Utah, Northwestern and a trio of ACC teams in Virginia, Wake Forest, and Pittsburgh.
With the Oscars taking place tonight, I thought I would hand out my season hoops awards.
Best Picture: This has to be the UConn Huskies (27-3). It is not easy to defend a national title, especially with a different cast of characters, but Dan Hurley's squad has made it look easy this season winning the Big East by 4 games.
Best Actor: Zach Edey is another repeat winner averaging 24 points, 11 boards, 2 assist and 2.2 blocks in his senior season.
Best Actress: Caitlyn Clark has people tuning into the girls game. Amzaing shooter.
Best Director: Randy Bennett took St Mary's from 3-5 to a West Coast title, with a 16 game win streak along the way. Others considered were TJ Otzelberger (Iowa State), Amir Abdur-Rahim (South Florida) and Bryce Drew (Grand Canyon) and Will Wade (McNeese State).
Best Makeup: Alabama is not 2-7 against ranked opponents. The Tide has taken advantage of beating up on lesser opponents to get to 20-10.
SNUBBED: Houston we have a problem. The Cougars can make me pay for the snub with a Championship run.
Bubble watch: The Zags are one of the last four in and will need tonights win vs St Marys to secure a seed in March. Double Bubble game alert as Providence will take on Villanova at noon. Both teams set on the First Four Out line entering today's contest. Wake, Pitt, and Virginia are all on the outside of the bubble and all three will be playing on the road today. Will any of them join Duke and UNC, or will the ACC only send two teams this year? Michigan State and Oregon both could use a statement game, and get one today vs projected #1 seeds Purdue and Arizona. Texas Tech destroyed Kansas a couple weeks back, but have lost 3 of 4. They cannot afford a slipup against the Mountaineers today. FAU has went 3-3 in there last six, and need to right the ship this week. If not, a big double bubble game may be in store next week when they finish the season vs Memphis.
Karl Hoalst has led the m2m standings for the past few weeks but was overtaken this week by Ray Smith. Still anything goes come tournament time, but being up towards the top definitely will effect who you dance with come Cinderella time.
Just a quick article this Super Bowl weekend with 22 of the top 25 in action today, including a rare must watch non-conference game. Gonzaga will travel to Rupp Arena to take on #17 Kentucky at 4pm on CBS. Another week of upsets should start today, as eleven Top 25 teams will play on the road in hostile environments.
Enjoy today's basketball slate, tomorrow's Super Bowl and halftime show. Also, please continue to get those payments coming in
(February 3, 2024) Ground Hog Day, Duke vs UNC, Super Bowl. Yes, spring is right around the corner. The Blue Devils will be traveling down to Chapel Hill this evening to take on the Tar Heels, airing on ESPN. Unlike last season, when they played a rare game in which both teams were unranked, this year's edition features two top 10 teams. Saturday’s showdown between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils will be the 49th time the programs have played each other while both were ranked in the top 10. How remarkable is that figure? In the history of men’s college basketball, no other series has more than 14 top-10 matchups. It’s remarkable that these teams are 57-57 against each other dating back to 1977. They are 24-24 in their last 48 games played.
Today’s hoops slate features several other exciting math-ups including Tennessee vs Kentucky, Iowa St vs Baylor, Utah State vs SDSU, Houston vs Kansas and tomorrow Wisconsin vs Purdue. Sunday's game will be the fourth top ten matchup of this weekend. Like the Tar Heels, Wisconsin got trapped in a look ahead game on Thursday, losing in OT to Nebraska. That loss dropped them into a tie with Purdue atop the Big 10 standings. Purdue meanwhile has quietly became the first team to win 20 games this season. But one of their losses in the conference play was also to Nebraska. This is kind of strange as Duke and UNC both loss to Georgia Tech, and Kentucky and Tennessee both share recent loss to South Carolina, and the Cyclones of Iowa State took down both Kansas and Houston.
Enough about the ranked teams, we closed January with a record number of unranked teams taking down ranked opponents. Just crazy how many good games are on in any given night.
(January 27, 2024) The state of Wisconsin went a long way to swinging the standings again this week as two of the hottest teams right now are Wisconsin(16-4) and Marquette. Karl Hoalst has both teams and taken over the top line in the standings. Since these two faced off on December 2nd in a game that the Badgers upset then #3 Marquette, both have played themselves into the #2 line in March. The Badgers lead the way in the Big 10 after knocking off Michigan State last night 81-66 as AJ Storr led the way with 28 points. Wisconsin will try to keep from slipping up in a look ahead game at Nebraska on Thursday before battling the Boilermakers next Sunday. Shaaka Smart's Golden Eagles had a tough stretch at the beginning of the new year, however, three straight wins over Villanova, St Johns, and DePaul has them right back in the log jam for second place in the Big East. One of those teams is Seton Hall, who beat Marquette a couple week's ago. Those two will square off again today at 1pm today on Fox Sports. I have really enjoyed watching the Big East this season. To me it is the most enjoyable conference to watch. Sure it can be sloppy, but I like the fast pace action. Today's high screen play does not appeal to me as much as a run and gun style.
Other action today has the top two teams in the ACC facing off at 2pm on ESPN. The Tar Hills have climbed into the Top 5 and are the only team in the Big6 to be undefeated in conference play at 8-0 and riding an 11-game win streak. Again, with Duke only a week away, the Tar Heels better not take their eye off of the Seminoles. FSU is 6-2 in the ACC and have won six of their last seven after a 6-6 start to the season. FSU junior guard Jamir Watkins is coming off a 27 point game, while UNC senior guard RJ Davis put up a career high 36 points in the Tar Heels last outing.
#3 Kansas is a 3.5 point underdog today at #23 Iowa State. Does this show how mediocre Kansas is this year or how tough of a place Hilton Coliseum is to play? You can watch that game on CBS at 1:30pm. Today's Top 20 battle will be #20 Texas Tech vs #11 Oklahoma, however, no national media for that one???
(January 27th, 2024) Well we are about half way through the conference schedules and the mid-majors are not getting any love. The Princeton Tigers are getting no respect in the polls or the national media despite their nation best 15-1 record. Don't sleep on this Tiger squad as they returned a core of the team that beat #2 Arizona last season on their way to a Sweet 16 run. A dozen entries selected the Tigers as Patrick McGlone tops that list just 6 pts back. Today, Princeton squares off against second place Cornell (14-3) in Ivy league play. Can anyone give me Cornell's nickname? Answer: Big Red
I highlighted Grand Canyon on here a couple of weeks ago, and they promptly loss. However, Coach Bryce Drew has the Antelopes at 18-2 and leading the way in the WAC as our next best mid-major. Next on the list are two team battling it out in the Missouri Valley Conference as Drake(16-4) and Indiana State(17-3). I will give the nod here to the Sycamores who beat Drake and have the better record. The last two to round out the Top 5 are everyone's favorite James Madison(17-2) and App State(15-4). The Dukes have the better record and the Mountainers lead the Sun Belt Conference with only 1 loss.
(January 13, 2023) After five entries were tied atop the leaderboard last week, only Kevin Hansman survived the top line as Purdue, Houston, Kansas, and Tennessee all were defeated in a two day window. UConn barely survived a fierce battle with Xavier, who beat them twice last season, or it would have been the entire top 5 going down to defeat. It seems like this year, every week we are seeing new names up top. Even yours truly (Bottom Feeder) finds himself in second place in this week and that never happens. I had to look to see if I sorted the standings wrong.
I sure put the jinx on the undefeated teams last week, as Ole Miss, James Madison, and Houston all fell. This week I would like to talk about two other teams now leading the way with a 15-1 record. Those teams are Grand Canyon and Utah State. Katie Banks and Ron Cracraft both selected Bryce Drew's Antelopes, while only John Houser took a chance on the Aggies. Gabe McGlothan is the heart and soul of the Grand Canyon squad, and has the Antelopes on an 11 game win streak and #34 NET ranking. It has been nearly seven year's since Gabe led his high school to a championship on the Grand Canyon floor, but after fighting through injuries, red shirt seasons, covid seasons, this graduate student's consistency and leadership is unmatched. Utah State heads into today's Mountain West battle against UNLV lighting up the scoreboard. The Aggies have won seven games by 23 points or more this season. The Runnin Rebels have turned into the Gunnin Rebels this season, winning or losing by the three. They will again, need to outshoot Utah State from behind the arch in order to keep in this game. The Aggies have won 5 straight in this series, look for them to make it six today.
(January 6, 2024) Sun Belt favorite, James Madison, was the most selected wildcard team in this year's march2madness. Mark Byington's squad has proven that pick as a success. Thursday, Terrance Edwards led the way for the Dukes with 19 points ending Louisiana-Lafayette's 19 game home court streak. JMU became the first team to 14 wins, and are enter today's game vs Southern Mississippi as one of three unbeatens. Houston and Ole Miss both enter today at 13-0. Houston will host it's first ever Big12 opener against a struggling and Huggins-less West Virginia (5-8) squad. Ole Miss is a different story, the undefeated Rebels open up SEC play on the road at #5 Tennessee (10-3) as an 11.5 point underdog. Who will be the last undefeated team standing? My pick would be JMU.
The best of the one loss teams is the #1 ranked Purdue Boilermakers. Last night the Boilermakers held off a late charge from the Fighting Illini. Purdue looked dominant early on, but it took someone else besides Zach Edey in this one, as Brad Underwood's game plan was not to let the big guy score. Red-shirt sophomore, Trey Kaufman-Renn was that someone else with his season high 23 points. Today's best game is not on national television. A battle between two surprisingly good 13-1 Mountain West teams. Colorado State vs Utah State tips off in Logan, UT at 9 pm tonight. Isiah Stevens leads a balance Rams attack versus the Aggies. Colorado State's top four scorers all have a 50%+ field goal percentage as they share the ball very well. The Aggies don't shoot as well as the Rams, instead they rely on Great Osobor to get them running the court. Utah State has scored 80+ in 4 of the last 5 games.
Please check out the march2madness results, as five players are now tied for the top line. Tighter than ever from top to bottom, this season promises to be interesting.
(January 1, 2024) Happy New Year! Not much action this past week except for FAU losing to FGCU on Saturday. However, that was enough for Tom Mullen to take over the top slot in march2madness. We head into the New Year with three undefeated teams, as Houston, James Madison, and Ole Miss are all 13-0. Did you have that one picked? The answer is NO, as no one picked Ole Miss and only a handful have both Houston and James Madison. Not many top 20 matchups this week, however, we do get #9 Illinois vs #1 Purdue on Fox Sports on Friday night. This will serve as an appetizer for a big Saturday slate which I will report on Saturday morning.
Continue to get those payments in. The PayPal link is on the SCOREBOARD page.
(December 23, 2023) Well that was an exciting week of college games, especially the ESPN triple header on Wednesday, the Battle of the Bluegrass State, and even last night watching Yale give Kansas all they could handle. After the dust settled, Justin Malzahn has taken over the top slot in march2madness, and now there are 125+ entries within 10 games of each other. Big East kicked off their conference play this week, with most other conferences scheduling weaker opponents to get ready for the new year.. Today's best game will be a chance to watch the #14 FAU Owls take on #4 Arizona at 3pm on CBS. This will be our only TOP 25 matchup on the slate until next weekend.
Enjoy the holidays!
(December 16, 2023) The past two weeks have been a little light when it comes to quality matchups. I think several schools keep a light schedule to correspond with finals week. None the less, I have updated the march2madness results, and to my surprise there has been plenty of movement. Like last season, Nelson Prosper has jumped up to the top of the leader board. We will see if he free falls like last year or not. Justin Malzhan, Mark Arnold, and Kevin Klear are hot on his tail, just 1.5 points back. All of these top selections have one thing in common, and that is CLEMSON. Lead by center, PJ Hall, the Tigers are one of only 7 remaining undefeated teams. The others are Arizona, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, James Madison, Baylor and Houston.
I have posted all payments now, please take a look at both your entry and pay status and let me know if anything looks incorrect. For those of you who have not marked paid, you can send me a check or make payment via PayPal link that is displayed on the the SCOREBOARD page. Also, to view the scoreboard in full view, there is an arrow in the top right hand corner. Click on that arrow and you will find easier viewing of the results.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
(December 16, 2023) After a couple of slow weeks, college basketball will take center stage today with several marquee games on the slate. Kentucky and North Carolina will resume their annual meeting with a 5:30 tip-off in Atlanta. There should be plenty of blue in the crowd. Both Coach Cal and Coach Davis are looking for consistency from their rebuilt squads. They have both looked like Final Four teams at times this season, to looking like a one and done team the next game. Let's hope they both play at the top of their game today and we are treated a holiday viewing treat. If not the blue bloods, their is plenty of other action today. The best game of the day will be in Indianapolis, where former Tar Heel, Caleb Love will lead his undefeated and #1 ranked Arizona team up against #3 Purdue Boilermakers. Zach Edey is dominating to the tune of 25 points and 11 rebounds a game. However, Arizona will counter with Ourmar Ballo and a 7'2" freshman with the nickname of Mount Krivas. If you like Big Boy basketball, this is the game for you. Tip-off is 4:30pm. CBS tips-off the day at 12:30 game from Assembly Hall with Kansas and a surprisingly good Hoosier team. Michigan State will have a "neutral site" game at 2pm on Fox against Baylor. The Spartans are now 4-5 and in need of this win. Fox also gives us a prime time game today with Alabama visiting Creighton should be a fast pace game. Let's not forget, this really got started last night, as UConn traveled out to Seattle and muscled up against Gonzaga, beating the Bulldogs by 11 points. Enjoy!!!
The football record of the four Big 12 expansion teams was 18-30 and none of them had a winning record. With no bowl games on the horizon, Houston (8-0), BYU (7-0), Cincinnati (7-0) and UCF (5-2) have proven their worth on the hardwood. Houston, coming off a Final Four run has capitalized on a soft schedule, with A&M the only challenge they should before Big 12 opener vs West Virginia. The Cougars could easily enter 2024 as #1 team in the country. BYU has climbed into the Top 25 with wins over NC State, SDSU, and Arizona State, topping the century mark twice. These Cougars have already sank 89 threes. This year's Bearcats have averaged 85 points to date, with wins over smaller but perennial tournament teams in NKU, Howard, Eastern Washington, and FGCU. However, the best win might have been a 89-54 victory over Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets have since beaten Duke and Miss State. BYU and Cincinnati will open Big 12 play against each other. UCF looks much closer to a Big 12 roster than they did a season ago. However, the Knights soft schedule could build some confidence before the onslaught of teams they will face to open the conference play (Kansas State, Kansas, BYU, Texas, Houston).
James Madison was the most popular wildcard team, edging out Liberty 47-45. The Dukes are undefeated, in the top 25, scored 100+ three times already, and might have played the game of the year holding off Kent State 113-108 in double overtime. Other popular wildcards include Drake, Mississippi State, Cincinnati, BYU, and Colorado State. Overall, there were 33 different wildcard teams selected.
The first set of results are posted under "SCOREBOARD" in the menu. Click the results to expand. Please double check your entry to make sure it is correct. I will have the PayPal payments posted to the results in next week's edition. I have also added the STATS tab in the menu that shows the selection percentage of each category. Kind of interesting and quick to view.
ACC/SEC Challenge, Deadline and My Picks: The marc2madness deadline has passed. There were 185 online entries and I have approximately 50 entries to enter by hand that came in via email and snail mail. FAU was the only team to be selected in over half of the entries. Below are my two selections this year. I will have all the entries posted by the weekend. Enjoy this week's inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge that starts tonight with #8 Miami vs #12 Kentucky at Rupp Arena. Other interesting matchups include North Carolina vs Tennessee, Duke vs Arkansas, Clemson vs Alabama, and Virginia vs Texas A&M.
Mick McMullen (imcommish): Baylor, UConn, Colorado, Memphis, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Illinois, Bradley
Mick McMullen (Bottom Feeder): Baylor, Purdue, Wisconsin, Colorado, Kentucky, Ohio State, Auburn, Texas Tech
I know it seems like everything is about Taylor Swift these days, and why not role with it. Bryan Lee took home over $3300 last season, could you take home a piece of the jackpot this season. This will be march2madness 22nd season and this year's edition pays tribute to Taylor Swift. She has became a billionaire this past year with her Eras tour and some genius marketing. Taylor is known for writing songs about her exes, will a breakup song about Travis Kelce happen before Selection Sunday? This year's categories are Cardigan (private schools), New Heights (teams expected to be on the podium), Shake it Off (teams looking for a rebound from last season), Ready for It (mid-majors ready for the dance), Reputation (brand name schools trying to keep relevant), Kelce six-pack (Football schools that can also hoop), 1989 (these schools had a 159-54 record back in 1989).
The contest deadline is Monday, November 27th at 7 pm. Below is a quick review of each category. To enter see "Rules and Entry Form" . The "Study Hall" link is also back to give you some different website views and prepare your picks. Remember, if you don't want your picks to be like everyone else, don't always take the highest ranked team. Seldom does that pay off. The march2madness contest is set up to reward the lower seeds come tournament time. The winner always has a couple lower seeded team make the run. Last year, Miami, Creighton, and Drake were the difference makers on the top line. Bryan also had three of the final four which helped.
CARDIGANS: Here we have the private schools that should be in anyone's Elite Eight water cooler talk. John Scheyer got Duke to 27 wins in his first season at the helm of Duke. Kevin Flipowski returns along with a loaded Blue Devils freshman class. Shaka Smart has a loaded backcourt and Big East POY Tyler Kolek. Jalen Bridges returns as Baylor's top scorer for a Bears team that was a 3 seed last season. Where is Drew Timme? Well he is not playing for the Zags for the first time in what seemed a decade. Mark Few will have more coaching to do this season, but the Zags have the athletes. Double-double? That is what the Hurricanes' Norchard Omier brings to the table nightly. Creighton returnees their top three scorers including All-American Ryan Kalkbrenner.
NEW HEIGHTS: UConn and Danny Hurley try to repeat as the Huskies return three of five top scorers from last year's championship team. Kansas is only a year removed from their championship, and Bill Self's squad is on the top of all the preseason ranking. Hunter Dickinson transfer into a team loaded with five star talent. Houston still doesn't have a problem. I expect them to battle Kansas and Baylor in their first Big12 season. POY? I don't know how it can be anyone other than Purdue's Zach Edey. The Boilermaker is a beast. Santiago Vescovi returns to a Vols team that should again be singing Rocky Top in the Sweet 16. Arizona brought in Caleb Love from UNC, and he already led the Wildcats to a victory over Duke in Cameron indoor. Coach K, I think he has done that before.
SHAKE IT OFF: St Johns shakes off a departing coach by bringing in a legend. Rick Pitino takes over the Red Storm and we know Rick will get them in the dance. Xavier was riding a high last season until Freemantle got hurt late in the 2023 season. He will be out again this season, but Sean Miller speaks highly about the current Musketeers. Wisconsin missed the tournament last season, but this team looks more like the Badger teams of the past. TCU looks to rebound from their Sweet 16 drubbing to UConn with their third straight tourney appearance. K-State surprised everyone last year and were a popular wildcard selection. However, they will have to shake off losing their top three players. Jerome Tang did reload through the transfer portal and the Wildcats will be deeper.
READY FOR IT: Talk about the ageless Drew Timme. Memphis potential transfer DeAndre Williams is 27 years old. Who in this group is this year's FAU? How about FAU? The Owls have moved to a tougher conference, but do return all five starters from last year's Final Four team. Saint Mary's is actually the favorite to win West Coast Conference over Gonzaga. We will see. Dayton is healthy this season, while Boise State and San Diego State look like favorites in their conferences.
REPUTATION: UNC was up 18 at half in the 2022 Championship game, and nothing has looked the same since. Kentucky finished third in the SEC, UCLA fell short of their Final Four expectations, Villanova misses Jay Wright, Indiana fell off the cliff, and I don't know what to make of Florida. These basketball blue bloods may turn into Bad Bloods. Maybe that should have been the category.
KELCE SIX-PACK: Football schools at heart, these six are finding their footing on the hardwood. Alabama tries for 100 every night, Izzo says don't call the Spartans a football school, Chris Holtman isn't prone to consecutive letdown seasons at Ohio State, Texas and Texas A&M look to join Houston as Final Four teams from Texas, and USC has Bronny James recovering from his heart issue, but their is more then enough talent in SoCal for a Elite Eight run.
1989: These schools had 159 wins back in 1989. Lou Henson's Illini might have been the best team ever assembled in Champaign. The starting five of Kenny Battle, Kendall Gill, Steve Bardo, Nick Anderson, and Larry Smith went 31-5. Arkansas was also a 30 win team in 1989, how will these teams do in 2023-24? There are some good coaches in this grouping, this will be one category you will want to get right.
(April 4, 2023) Hello friends, it was more than one shining moment for the UConn Huskies as they shined the entire tournament. They won all six contest by double digits and were clearly the best team on the court in Houston this weekend. Led by big man and tournament MOP, Adama Sanogo (17pts, 10 rebounds), the Huskies take home their fifth national title, drawing them even with Duke and Indiana, and fourth all-time. I liked what Clark Kellogg said after their 76-59 victory, "UConn was worthy, dominant, and deserving." Congratulations to Coach Hurley and the UConn program.
Also congratulations to Bryan Lee, our worthy, dominant and deserving march2madness winner. The UConn win put Bryan Lee back at the top where he found himself most of the season. In fact, Bryan becomes our first champion to have been at the top of the standings entering the tournament. He was one of three sheets that were the same, but were separated with the Cinderella selections. The other two, Jeff Merrill and Nelson Prosper will split the forth/fifth place money ($225). Bryan will be put in the Hall of Champions and receive $3375 for his dominant performance. Second place ($675) will go to Craig Paul who picked UConn in the beginning and added SDSU as a Cinderella, the only person to do so. Craig is a resident of West Harrison, Indiana and is a big time Florida Gator fan. A long time participant in m2m, Craig's favorite moment was Lamont Butler hitting that game winning shot that locked up a payout. Third place ($225) goes to Silvio Bohannon, who started the tourney 38 points back, road his Cinderella FAU, along with SDSU and Miami all the way to the top. Silvio just needed an Aztec championship but fell short. Silvio is a sports nut that was born and raised in SoCal and has recently moved to Florida. He is also the son-n-law of our forth place finisher and two time champ Nelson Prosper. Greg Lueders finishes last and is awarded a free entry into next year's m2m.
The perfect sheet for the season: Gonzaga (51) Arkansas (37.5) Xavier (34.5) UConn (98) Miami, Fl (61) Creighton (46) Purdue (34.5) and FAU (80.5). I always give a couple days for anyone to review the results but have never had a problem. The posted results will become OFFICIAL on Thursday, 4/6/23. Thank you everyone for your participation and hope to see you back next season.
(April 3, 2023) SDSU vs UConn, the 2023 march2madness contest will come down to the championship game. It will be a battle between two "Give It Away" teams, two teams that have played excellent defense, and two teams that only Craig Paul has. Yes, Craig Paul was the only person to pick SDSU as his Cinderella and also have UConn in the "Give it Away" grouping. A UConn win (+29 pts) will net Craig second place, and SDSU win (+30 pts) will put him third. Silvio Bohannon, who had three of the Final Four and sits in first place, will need SDSU to hoist the hardware to hold onto first place. Meanwhile, Bryan Lee will need the 29 points that comes with a UConn win to collect the first place prize money. I don't think we have ever seen so much come down to the final game. Good luck and may the the final result come down to the final shot.
BTW, congratulations to North Texas for winning the NIT. No points were added as no one had the Mean Green on their entry.
(April 2, 2023) A tournament like no other was missing one thing, and that was a game winning shot at the buzzer. That issue was resolved Saturday night when Lamont Butler hit a twenty footer that swished the net with 0.0 on the clock to send the San Diego State Aztecs to Championship Monday. FAU played a tremendous game, taking the lead to 14 points early in the second half, but the size of SDSU caught up to them. The Aztecs rebounded 56% of their miss shots in the second half and got several free throws as they attacked the basket relentlessly. The final possession for FAU resulted in a block shot that Lamont Butler took the other way, pulling up at the baseline and draining the shot that will be remembered a long time in SoCal. San Diego State was the only pre-season ranked team of the Final Four, and now they are dancing into Monday night.
The other contest between Miami and UConn was a game of runs. Miami just let the Huskies have too many of those 8-0 runs, falling behind by 20 points at one time. The Canes tried fighting back each time, but were gased in the end. Again, it was the size of UConn inside that troubled Miami all night. The Canes ended up with 20+ missed layups, and were blocked by the Huskies on 5 other shots. Coach Hurley's squad heads into Monday's final as the favorite after dominating all five of their opponents. The Huskies are now 16-0 outside of Big East play on the season.
(March 26, 2023) For those who have followed college hoops this season, the one thing we all knew was there was no great teams and anyone could lose on a given night. The four that haven't loss in the past two weeks are UConn, Florida Atlantic, San Diego State, and Miami. Their seeding is #4, #9, #5, and #5, the highest total seeding ever in the Final Four. UConn got here in a dominant fashion, winning each of it's games by double digits. The Huskies totally dismantled Gonzaga on Saturday, and head to Houston as an even money favorite. The other three are on their first trip to the Final Four. FAU will leave the tournament with the most wins of any team this season (35). If you watched SDSU this tournament and especially today, you noticed they have multiple shut down defenders. I have never saw a team as frustrated as Creighton not being able to take their defenders 1on 1. And how about that comeback today for Miami, or was it a Texas collapse. From 13 down to winning by 8, the Hurricanes are the ACC's bright spot in a down season. The Canes are definitely tournament tested with wins over Drake, Indiana, Houston, and Texas. By far the toughest path of any the Final Four teams.
Silvio Bohannon has been playing march2madness for a long time. He now finds himself in the top position after picking 3 Final Four teams, including Cinderella FAU. However, Bryan Lee who has been hanging around the top spot all season has the other Final Four team and favorite UConn. There could be plenty of money up for grabs if we see a SDSU vs UConn final. The two "Give it Away" teams will definitely decide placing in this year's march2madness final totals.
(March 24, 2023) Nate Oates and Alabama did not have any answers as the Aztecs clamped down the defense and shocked the #1 overall seed. As Alabama hurt Chris Clark's (-22) chances, it helps Victor Haney, Pete Tremolis, and Silvio Bohannon who all have SDSU. Silvio is in fourth place and also is one of three entries to pick up Florida Atlantic. Most of the picks up top have four Elite 8 teams. Bryan Lee is still holding onto first place with Miami, UConn, Texas and Creighton. Circling back to FAU: Overlooked all year but still impressing. No one selected FAU this year and only 3 picked them up as a Cinderella. With Houston eliminated, the Owls will have the most wins of any team in 2022-23. Another snubbed team is the Hurricanes. Miami, FL was the least taken team in their category and only 1 Cinderella selection for the 5 seed. We will have a clear picture at the top of m2m after this weekend's action.
So many good moments from the Sweet 16, but here are my Top 5.
1) May I assist you? Markquis Nowell was masterful with a NCAA tourney record 19 assist in the OT thriller against Michigan State. At 5'8" the shortest player on the floor sees the court better than anyone else in the tournament.
2) Bitter Rival: You could tell in the Mick Cronin's postgame interview that the UCLA-Gonzaga clash has turned into must watch tv. This one didn't go into overtime, but was the best game of the Sweet 16. UCLA blows big lead, cuts a 10 point Zag lead to +1 in the last two minutes, but Gonzaga's Julian Strawther hits a 30 foot 3-pointer and the Zags make it two year's in a row breaking the Bruin's hearts.
3) SEC-Big10 Challenged: The two conferences had the most teams in the tournament but advance with ZERO Elite Eight teams. Meanwhile the Big East and Big 12 have half of the Elite Eight teams (Creighton, UConn, Texas, K-State) and all four of them will be favorites this weekend.
4) Block Party: San Diego State knocks off #1 Alabama tallying 8 blocks on the night. Alabama couldn't get it done inside, but it wasn't much better outside shooting 3 of 27 from behind the arc.
5) #1 Where are you? For the first time in tournament history there will be NO #1 SEEDS in the Elite Eight. Texas is the only #2 seed.
(March 20, 2023) Drew Timme scored 28 points in the night cap vs TCU to finish off round 2. The scores have been updated in a timely manner this time around, and Victor Haney has taken over the top line. The Victor#2 entry has six of the Sweet 16 teams helped out by Xavier's big win over Pitt. Xavier now leads the Funky Monk's category with 34.5 points. Chris Clark has moved to 4th place with the help of the Zags 43 points. Both Victor and Pete Tremoulis have SDSU with 47 points. The Aztecs are the highest scoring team heading into next week's Sweet 16 matchup vs Alabama, who is also in the Give It Away category with SDSU and UConn. Michigan State was the only one of the eight Big Ten schools to make it through to the second weekend. 19 of the Spartan'se's 35 points have come from their tournament run as a #7 seed. Topped only by FAU's 23 tournament points. Too bad no one selected Princeton, as the Tigers have tallied 35 tournament points and have looked dominant. So many possibilities are still out there. My Californiacation sheet started the weekend back 55 points, still back 42 points but top entry with UCLA, along with Arkansas, FAU, SDSU, Texas. Unlikely, but there is still a path. I thought I would jinx my own selection this time.
All the PayPal payments have been posted, I know I have a few checks that are in the mail and will be posted on the next results sheet.
(March 18, 2023) WOW! what an exciting first round. We all knew this was the year for the upset and we saw that with FDU becoming the second #16 seed to win knocking off #1 Purdue. Pete Tremoulis capitalized on this by dropping the Boilermakers and picking up Pitt, which beat Miss St and then upset Iowa State for 22 points. That 22 points swing has put Pete into a first place tie with Bryan Lee. Arizona becomes the first school to lose twice as the #2 seed, falling to Princeton. However, no one took advantage of the points from the Ivy League Champs. Virginia lost to Furman and has now lost to a #13, #15, and #16 seed in the past five years. The Paladins were also not selected as a Cinderella. Looking at the standings, this Give It Away grouping may be the difference maker with Alabama, San Diego State and UConn scattered around the top 50 entries.
Sorry about the delay in the first round results, I was traveling back from Arizona today and it took a while to get all the Cinderella's entered. Please check your results and let me know if anything looks goofy. I will be double checking my figures tomorrow. I have several payments to post. Those payments along with the second round results will post Sunday after the TCU/Gonzaga nightcap. Enjoy the second round and may your bracket not be broken.
As we finish up Championship Week and get ready for Selection Sunday, I am getting excited for the madness. The next set of results will be posted Sunday night or Monday morning. At that time each entry will be allowed to replace one of their teams for a Cinderella team. the entry will maintain the dropped team's points to date, but will receive tournament points from the Cinderella team. Tournament points are awarded based on the seed number. A #12 seed teams receives 12 points for each win (in addition to bonus points for Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final Four, Final).
This year I am trying something new and that is submitting your points online vs an email. It is set up just like the form you entered at the beginning of the season. You just type in your name, email, Cinderella, and Dropped team. The form will send you a confirmation upon completion.
Just click on the "SUBMIT CINDERELLA" link to the left (under the Dickie V picture).
NCAA TOURNAMENT SCORING (includes “First Four” games)
+Seed number for each NCAA Tournament win (if #6 seed wins three games=18 points)
+5 Sweet 16, Elite Eight, and Final Four Appearances
+10 Final Four Win
+25 NCAA Tournament Champ
+15 NIT Champion
(March 6, 2023) I updated the braccket tonight to include all the Conference Champions. An outright championship netted a team 3 points, and a co-championship was split (1.5 pts each). No one really ran away with points from conference titles this season. Our leader, Michael Wright had 2 Champs and 2 Co-Champs which tallied an additional 9 points for the sheet. Plenty of additional points to be awarded this week as each conference tournament winner receives 5 points for the automatic bid, and each at-large bid team will receive 3 points. The teams will still receive 1 point per win and -1/2 point per loss. Remember, that not even half the points are given out at this point.
Starting after the draw on Sunday, each entry will be allowed to substitute one of there teams with a Cinderella team. That Cinderella team will need to be seeded #5-#16. The top 16 seeds will be off limits. I will post something on that as we get closer to Sunday.
Several still need to get those payments in and can do so with a check or with PayPal . I will send out an email on the Cinderella procedure next weekend.
The regular season titles have been decided and we did a poor job picking conference champs this year. In all, there were 21 teams that were either champs or co-champs of their conferences that did no get selected in this contest. Let's look at the TOP 5 MISSES.
1) Marquette (25-6): Picked for ninth place in the conference, Shaka out smarted the Big East, as the Golden Eagles go 17-3 in the capturing the crown. This might have been a deal with the Devil, as Marquette finished the season with 666 3-pointers.
2) FAU (28-3): The Owls went 18-2 in capturing Conference USA in easy fashion. Florida Atlantic would have tallied 29.5 points as your wildcard team.
3) Oral Roberts (29-4): It's been the Jack Rabbits and Buffalo battling it out the last few seasons in the Summit. However, this year the trophy goes the the other Golden Eagles, Oral Roberts. The only team not to lose a conference game, going a perfect 18-0.
4) VCU (24-7): Usually always garnering a few wildcard selections, the Rams were left off everyone's sheet. VCU wins the A-10 title over the handful of teams that were selected (Dayton, St Louis, Richmond).
5) Bradley (25-9): Drake was a big play in march2madness, but it was Bradley who took home the MVC title on the final day of the season. However, Drake got it's revenge this pass week knocking off the Braves and punching their ticket to the dance.
(March 4, 2023) It is now March and time for time for some wild results. Who are we kidding, that has been happening all year, especially in the ACC. Today, while Duke and UNC will be heavily viewed , the ACC game of the week is actually the battle for a share of the title between Miami and Pitt. The winner will take home a share of the regular season title. Both teams are sitting at 14-5 in league play, but where Miami was picked #4 preseason, Pitt was picked #14. Coach Capel's Panthers get it done outshooting their opponents. Only Wake Forest has made more 3-pointers then the 281 that Pitt has seen hit the bottom of the net. Both these teams are coming off bad losses, losing to ACC disappointments Florida State (9-21) and Notre Dame (11-19). Most of your league titles are locked up with Purdue, Alabama, UCLA, Kansas, Houston and Marquette adding to their trophy cases.
Monday night I will be adding the points for all the league champs and updating the website. Several still need to get those payments in and can do so with a check or with PayPal . I will send out an email on the Cinderella procedure next weekend.
(February 25, 2023) The calendar hasn't flipped to March let, but for several mid-majors, their madness starts next week. That also mean that today is the final conference game for many of them. Two conferences in particular are up for grabs today in the Missouri Valley and West Coast. Both these contest will be aired nationally, both have Bulldog mascots represented, and both will have impact in the march2madness standings. Drake (24-6) enters today's 4 pm contest (ESPN2) with a ten game win streak, but face a Bradley team that has won nine in row. The winner will be the Valley's conference champ. Tucker Devries, the Bulldogs 6-7" sophomore guard may be the best player in the mids. He is an elite shooter with a NBA wingspan, knocking down 78 threes on the season, shoots 45% from the field, and 84% from the stripe. In fact, the Bulldogs have three starters shooting over 80% from the charity line. That gives Bulldogs the upper hand when finishing games.
The ESPN nightcap (10pm EST) will be Gonzaga and St Mary's, with the West Coast title on the line. The Bulldogs have been playing hungry since the loss to St Mary's at the beginning of the month. They have scored 99, 88, 108, 97, and 92 since that OT thriller. The tough part in beating St Mary's this year is they have a top defense, and they always seem to hit clutch shots. I personally think too many people are on the Zags bandwagon today, and although the Kennel will be rocking, the Gaels find a way to fly out of Spokane with the win.
(February 25, 2023) Talking about UK on the outside of the bubble just a couple weeks ago, Big Blue has moved up to third place in the SEC and a victory today (4pm CBS) against Auburn will put them in the drivers seat for a guaranteed spot in the SEC quarterfinals. This run kind of reminds me of UNC last season. Another blue blood who started putting it all together this time last season and made a run as an 8 seed in the tournament. I know I wouldn't want to be the #1 or #2 seed with if the Wildcats currently sitting in that 7-10 seed range.
After a couple lackluster Saturdays, today's schedule should get us ready for March.
#8 Texas vs #9 Baylor - These two started off the week in a three way tie with Kansas. Baylor lost a big lead on Kansas to drop 1 back. Texas finishes Big 12 play against Baylor, TCU and Kansas.
#17 Indiana vs #5 Purdue - Battle of the best two players in the Big 10 / country?
#18 UConn vs St John's - The Johnnies had their way with UConn in the first matchup. The Huskies have flipped the switch again, looking more like an Elite Eight team again.
Arizona St vs #7 Arizona - The Sun Devils couldn't have shot the ball worse in the first matchup. ASU is now in desperation mode and need a big win for their resume. Knocking off an in-state rival to do so would be very satisfying for their fans.
Arkansas vs #2 Alabama - The Tide will have to play better than they did against South Carolina, were they barely escaped with the OT win. Arkansas is another one of those teams who are dangerously desperate for a resume builder.
(February 18, 2023) Teams on the bubble are running out of chances for quality wins and cannot afford anymore bad losses. Today, we have a Dubble Bubble Alert for two BIG 10 teams. Rutgers (16-10) once looked like the team with the best shot to catch Purdue, but the Scarlet Knights are fading fast, losing three games in a row, including a bad home loss to Nebraska this week. Wisconsin (15-10) will host Rutgers at noon in this Dubble Bubble game. You would think the home court would be a factor, however, the Badgers win Tuesday over Michigan was their first victory at the Kohl Center in a month. The winner will find themselves in the Last Four talk for a couple more weeks, the loser will need to get red-hot down the stretch.
There are a few marquee matchups as well today. One I will be watching is the Tennessee-Kentucky matchup. I cannot figure out this Vols team. They lose two games to subpar teams on buzzer beaters but then knock Alabama off the top line. Kentucky (17-9) will look to knock off Tennessee (20-6) for the second time this season, improving their resume. However, a Wildcat loss could knock them into the bubble conversation.
The other must watch game on Saturday is the 4pm ESPN tip-off with first place in the Big 12 up for grabs. #9 Baylor (20-6) will head to the Phog winners of 10 of their last 11 games, leading the nation in offensive proficiency. #5 Kansas looked loss in January losing three in row but have righted the shipped in February winning five of six, including defeating then #1 Texas.
Houston (24-2) will likely take over the #1 ranking if they can avoid a defeat to Memphis (20-6) on Sunday. The Cougars have only slipped up once in league play but will face a Tigers team winners of eight of last nine. Who won the first contest between these two? Well neither. The American schedule makers were kind enough to wait till February 19th for them to square off against each other. They will turn around and do it again in a couple weeks.
The three headed monster got passed up with week, and Michael Wright now sits on the top line.
(February 13, 2023) March2madness has a three-headed monster that has surfaced to the top of the standings. Bryan Lee, Nelson Prosper, and Jeff Merrill all picked the same teams in this year’s contest. This was one of three sets of duplicate picks, but the only one with three the same. The triplet entry sits alone atop the leaderboard as of the latest standings. However, just this past weekend, this entry has seen both #1 Purdue and #23 UConn go down to defeat. They will get a chance to separate from each other when the Cinderella comes into play.
Purdue’s loss came on Super Bowl Sunday to an unranked Northwestern team. The Wildcats erased a 7 point halftime deficit to beat the Boilermakers 64-58. Purdue wasn’t alone as a ranked team to lose to an unranked team. It has now happened 104 times this season, seven this past weekend. Tennessee saw it happen twice this past week, losing both of their games to unranked teams (Vandy & Mizzou) at the buzzer.
Tonight kicks off another Big Monday with UNC hosting #19 Miami, and West Virginia going on the road against #9 Baylor. Both UNC and West Virginia have high NET rankings, but need wins tonight against ranked opponents to keep on the right side of the cut line. Super Tuesday puts bubble teams Syracuse, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State to the test versus ranked foes.
(February 4, 2023) It's time for another ranked matchup between two bitter rivals with fan bases that hate each other. But before we get to St Mary's and Gonzaga, I would like to first talk about Duke / Carolina. Today's matchup will not have Coach K, Dean, or Roy on the sidelines for the first time since 1961. Yes, it has been over sixty years since one of those three hasn't been on the court for this rivalry. Of course it didn't have the wow factor associated with it until Coach K arrived at Cameron in 1980. Over his illustrious career, Coach Kryzewski went 50-50 against the Heels, but today the Blue Devils will look to avenge Coach K's two most embarrassing losses, final game at Cameron and Final Four, both losses to an underdog UNC team. That task will be left up to the new man in charge, long time assistant John Scherer. Across the court from him will be second year coach, Hubert Davis, who comes into today's game 2-1 vs Duke. Like last season, Carolina has a veteran squad but lack consistent play and a young Duke squad, who look like Final Four team for 10 minutes and an NIT team for 10 minutes each half. If either of teams figure it out, watch out. Today's matchup will be on ESPN at 6:30.
Okay, let's get to the Rivalry game that is for first place. St Mary's host Gonzaga tonight as a favorite, yes that is correct, a three point favorite. The Gaels are 9-0 in the West Coast Conference, a one game lead over the Bulldogs, a better record but 6 spots below them in the latest national rankings (#18 vs #12). The winner will put themselves into position for a #2 seed come March.
Pictured above is Coach Oates when asked how many teams are undefeated in conference play this season. While Alabama and St Mary's are the only two he could come up with, there are actually five, and that's this week's starting five.
ALABAMA: Not only is the Crimson Tide the top team in the SEC (9-0) but one could argue the best team in the country (19-3). Nate Oates team just came off a 101-44 pounding of Vanderbilt. A solid team with the FOY in Brandon Miller leading the way. To go undefeated in conference play, they will have to navigate three tough road games in LSU, Auburn, and Tennessee.
ST. MARY'S: The Gaels go into today's matchup with Gonzaga on top of the West Coast standings for a change. St Mary's comes into today's contest on an 11 game win streak, with last weekend's BYU game they only matchup they struggled with. Do we have a new sheriff in town? Find out tonight at 10:30 EST on ESPN.
ORAL ROBERTS: At 11-0 and a four game lead in the Summit, Oral Roberts is looking for a date to the dance for the second time in three years. Even if they mess up in the conference tournament, the Golden Eagles have a NET ranking of 44. Senior guard, Max Abrams (22 ppg) has helped Oral Roberts top the century mark three times this season.
EASTERN WASHINGTON: The Eagles are flying high in the Big Sky again this season going 11-0 and riding a 13 game win streak. Long time assistant David Riley took over the Eagles program a season ago and looks for his first trip to the NCAA tourney.
COLGATE: The Raiders were sitting at 6-7 back in December, but the Patriot League has been very good to them, winning all 11 games to get to 17-7.
(January 28, 2023) This is why I am such a big fan of college hoops. Pitting two of the top conferences on the hardcourt in the middle of conference play may be something the coaches don't want, but as a fan, it is must see tv. Unfortunately, this will be the last edition of the SEC-Big12 Challenge, as the ACC steps in next season to take on the SEC. However, this last round gives us terrific matchups and a chance for several teams to build their resumes. I think the best matchup will be the Battle of Orange between Tennessee and Texas. Two top ten teams, a coach taking on his former team, while that former teams has seen success despite having their head coach suspended this season. Texas comes in ranked #10 and could be in a make or break stretch with #4 Tennessee, #17 Baylor, #5 Kansas State, and #9 Kansas. The Longhorns experience is at guard will be crucial on Saturday as the Vols will look to apply pressure and force Texas into turning the ball over. Kansas and Kentucky both looked a lot different a month ago. Kentucky was looking like a NIT appearance until the Cats won four straight. Meanwhile, Kansas was #2 until the Jayhawks lost their chalk dropping three in a row. Rupp will be rocking on Saturday (8pm) for this primetime matchup. The SEC may host the two top games on the Saturday bill, but the Big 12 may host the biggest upset of the day. Bama looks to keep the Tide rolling, but travel to Norman to take on a desperate Sooners team. We all know Porter Moser knows how to take down a favorite. I pick the Sooners to win this one 81-79. Players to watch on Saturday are of course Bama's Brandon Miller, Mr. double-double Oscar Tshiebwe vs KU Jalen Wilson, KSU field general Makquis Nowell (8 assist per game), and Baylor's Keyonte George. Top coaching matchup is definitely Self vs Calipari, but the more entertaining sideline matchup will be Bruce Pearl and Bob Huggins. I fill sorry for the referees in Morgantown.
(January 24, 2023) Last night I streamed The Man From Toronto starring Woody Harrelson as an assassin. I think the movie would have been better starring Zach Edey, a 7'4" center that has been killing it on courts across the country. This man from Toronto is averaging a double double (20 pts, 11 reb), and has the Purdue Boilermakers on top of the rankings at 19-1. Edey's scored 26 pts and gather 16 boards on Sunday, defeating Minnesota 58-55. The next episode will take place in Ann Arbor on Thursday.
Last week while Purdue climbed the ranks, others were falling. Last night Kansas lost their third on a row, UConn has lost 4 of 6, Duke climbed back into the polls in time to lose on the road AGAIN, UCLA remains top 5 after a ass kicking in the desert, Houston holds onto the top spot for a few weeks but losses at Temple. Others losing last week in the top 10 include Xavier, Virginia, and TCU.
A few exciting games on tap for this week. Tonight we get to see two surprising good Big 12 teams as #5 Kansas St takes on #12 Iowa St. The team in purple just keeps surprising us, this should be a fun one tonight on ESPNU. Wednesday night is Xavier vs UConn on FS1, Musketeers let down their guard and lost last week to DePaul, bringing everyone a little closer in the Big East. The Huskies snapped a 3 game skid and a win would put them back into the hunt. ESPN2 host the rivalry game between UCLA and USC on Thursday. The Bruins didn't handle the hostile environment real well on Saturday, let's see how they handle this road trip across town.
(January 14, 2023) Rather it be Tyger's flowing locks, Jacquez Jr's head band, Adam Bona's emergence, or Cronin's temper tantrums, the UCLA Bruins are a fun team to watch. This week they easily handled Utah to run their win streak to 12 games as they climb to number 7 in the national rankings. The win streak has had a couple close calls as they blew a huge lead to USC but hung on to a 2 point victory. A week earlier they escaped Pullman, WA with a 1 point victory over WSU. The second longest win streak in the country will be on the line today as they host Colorado. The top win streak belongs to Charleston. The Cougars are rolling through the Colonial Conference and should advance to 17 straight as they take on a 2-15 Elon team today. A few entries took Charleston as their wildcard, including our new points leader Mike Kammerer. FAU is another team with 12 game win streak but no one selected the Owls. The other two teams with double digit win streaks are Gonzaga and Xavier, both with 10 in a row. It still seems like UConn is getting all the media love in the Big East, but as the Huskies have loss 3 of 4, the Musketeers are rolling lately with three straight wins over UConn, Creighton, and Villanova. Another tough matchup tomorrow as X takes on Marquette. Shaka has coached up the Golden Flash and they go into tomorrow's matchup at 6-1 in Big East play. Gonzaga took on a tough preseason schedule and came out with just a few knicks and cuts. The Zags bandaged up those wounds and look for another undefeated walk through in the Big West. Gonzaga can sure put up the march2madness points for the regular season, but the question is always what will they do when it comes time to dance.
This week I will rank the best basketball conferences for 2023. This is my personal rankings based on talent level, coaching, competition from top to bottom, and most importantly, the watchability factor.
BIG EAST: I definitely think Fox Sports got it right picking up mid-week doubleheaders in the Big East. I find myself watching at least one of these games each week. Xavier and UConn give the league two complete teams, talented enough to reach the Final Four. Marquette and Providence are quite assassins and legit second weekend teams. Villanova has the talent but for the first time in along time, maybe not the coaching.
Big 12: From Top to bottom this is the best league, just sometimes sloppy to watch. When the bottom of your conference is Texas Tech and West Virginia, two teams that have been in the Top 25, then you know the conference is loaded. Currently, Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State are undefeated in league play. Kansas will play Iowa State today and Kansas on Tuesday.
SEC: Alabama and Tennessee are both in my top four teams, especially after Bama destroyed Arkansas earlier this week. However, this conference goes as Kentucky goes, as that is currently on a downward slide. Tennessee vs UK today!
B1G: The Big Ten will probably put the most teams in the NCAA tournament, but they will also likely have the most first round defeats. Right when you think a team like Michigan State is putting it together they lay a turd at Illinois. Can't figure these teams out.
ACC: Clemson and Pitt have been a pleasant surprise but Duke and UNC have been major let downs.
My apologies that I haven't watched any Mountain West games this season, I would expect they have a claim to the Starting Five this season.
(January 7, 2023) I was planning on doing an article this week about the two remaining undefeated teams, but then Purdue loss to Rutgers. So a Lonely Lobos article was on tap, then New Mexico loss to Fresno State. I now have to pivot and talk about surprise teams that are undefeated in conference. I will start with the most impressive win of the week, and that was K-State (13-1) putting up 116 points against #6 Texas. That is the most points scored on the road by an unranked team over a Top 10 team. The Longhorns scored 103 points and still loss by double digits as Tyrese Hunter and Marcus Carr combined for 56 pts. They are now 2-0 and in a tie atop the Big 12 with three other teams including another surprise in Iowa State (11-2). Only 8 sheets have K-State as their wildcard pick, while 18 selected the Cyclones. The B1G had several teams capable of winning the conference this season, and seven of them made it on the sheet, and seven is the number of teams that took Wisconsin (11-2) who was not on the sheet. The Greg Gard's balance attack has the Badgers tied with Michigan atop the B1G standings. Duke, UNC, Virginia, maybe a hot start Miami, FL. All teams that you may think are leading the ACC. Nope, it's Clemson and Pittsburgh. These two teams definitely were not on the radar as they garnered no wildcard selections. On top of the Big East is the last team I left off the sheet back in November. The Providence Friars (13-3) were an obvious team for the Funky Monks, but I thought they had to replace too much talent missing from last year's squad. Ed Cooley has done another masterful job, and has the Friars on the cusp of the Top 25 rankings again this season. Chris York was the lone entry to select Providence. The last team I would like to discuss is Pac-12 co-leader, Utah (12-4). Most of the Utes wins have came over weaker competition but they are the lone team to knock of Arizona this season. While a few people selected Utah State, Anthony Nichols pick of Utah is by itself.
Why you wait patiently today to see if I jinxed these teams, check out the updated standings. Also, make sure if you have paid that you have PP (PayPal) or pd (check) next to your name. If you have not paid, there is a PayPal link on the scoreboard page to do so. Enjoy this week's action.
Above is a picture from a pre-season rankings article. And you can see that like myself, there were quite a few whiffs in the projections. I try my best to come up with competitive categories, but their are always let downs (UNC, UK) as well as pleasant dominance (UConn, Purdue) that makes this impossible to predict. Below are my starting five surprises in the march2madness contest.
Higher Ground: this was suppose to be the category that lifted championship trophies this season. However, these six come into play today with 17 losses. However, selections of Houston and Gonzaga should net you some points the rest of the way with their softer conference schedules.
All Big10 schools outside of Purdue: I knew this conference was going to be tough to navigate this season but did not see all the bad losses these teams would put up prior to conference play. Pre-season selection Indiana loss their first conference game to Rutgers, and all though the Scarlet Knights are playing good basketball, the Hoosiers shouldn't have loss by 14. I threw Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan all in the same Under The Bridge category thinking they would have around the same record. 10-4, 10-4, 9-5, yes I hit that prediction. Iowa(9-6) was surprising good last season winning the Big 10, this year they have started 1-3. The Illini(9-5) look mediocre this season and now their top recruit, Skyy Clark, has stepped away from the team.
Blue Bloods: Blue may not be the color of the year. Duke(11-4). N Carolina (10-5), Creighton(9-6), Villanova(8-7), Kentucky(10-4). Looks like orange and red are this year's fashion trends.
Purdue and UConn: These were two clubs I struggled with the most when it came time to put them a category. I knew both were well coached and improving, I could not imagine just how good they have become. Watching the Boilermakers last season, I thought they were a better team Zach Edey on the bench. This year, the 7-4 center is my POY, averaging 21 points and 13 rebounds a game. You can't even do the "Hack-a-Shack" to him, as this season he shots 72% from the charity stripe. The best decision UConn ever made was returning to the Big East to help Dan Hurley with recruiting and it has paid off big in a short time. The Huskies have their hands full in a loaded Big East, but probably have the best roster.
Villanova, Florida, and Oregon: All teams I put on the list who have less than 5 points in the contest. Sorry Folks!
(January 1, 2023) Happy New Year everyone. I know 2023 will be prosperous to one of the entries. The results have been updated today and there has been movement up top with both UConn and Houston losing this week. That leaves us with two undefeated teams. Purdue is 13-0 and was selected by 50% of the entries, but the surprise of the contest may be wildcard New Mexico (14-0). While a few of you hoped on Rick Pitino and Iona, nobody selected Richard Pitino's Lobos. Will the Boilermakers or Lobos be the last undefeated team? Purdue's schedule is a little more challenging with Rutgers and a trip to Columbus this week to face the Buckeyes. However, with the way Zach Edey is playing, I will go with Purdue to get through the month undefeated.
(December 31, 2022) Today, the attention in college athletics is on the Grid Iron. The only Top 25 action on the hardwood between ranked teams will be a noon tipoff as #2 UConn heads into the Cintas Center to face #22 Xavier. The only other game of significance is the Battle for the Bluegrass, another noon tip-off as Kentucky tries to right the ship against a strugglinf Louisville squad.
My prediction for the CFP is Georgia and Michigan both winning by double digits today, with Michigan taking the Championship next Monday. I look for it to come down to the final possession and Stetson Bennett being stopped on the final drive by the Michigan Defense. These four schools are also having success on the basketball court. Georgia is a surprising 10-3 but there wins are against some weak opponents and they have yet to face a SEC opponent . I struggled putting TCU into the Funky Monks, afraid they would garner all the selections but a early season loss to Northwestern State scared people off. They ended up being the forth selection (13%) and have awarded those who took them with an 11-1 record. They will host Texas Tech today and travel to Baylor on Wednesday. Michigan and Ohio State were both in the Under the Bridge category, and both had 7-3 records going into the holidays. Ohio State won both of their games this week to improve to 9-3 and have the second best NET ranking in the Big 10. Meanwhile, Michigan loss to UNC and Central Michigan to drop to 7-5. They have the second worst NET ranking in the Big 10.
I will be back tomorrow with a 2022 with updated results and surprise teams on 2022.
(December 28, 2022) Clean shaving Rodney Terry has taken over the Texas program as the university investigates the Chris Beard fiasco. The Longhorns have not missed a beat winning all four games under Coach Terry. However, those games were against subpar competition in Rice, Stanford, Louisiana and Texas A&MC. Come Saturday, the Big 12 conference gets underway and the Longhorns will travel to Oklahoma in one of the last Red River Shootouts for these two in the BIG12 Conference.
I have updated the standings, and Nick Azbell has taken the lead over Larry Brock thanks in part to his Texas selection. Several others near the top have Texas in the By The Way grouping. Mississippi State has helped Deb Paschen into the Top 10 as a wildcard. The Bulldogs entered the top 25 this week but their schedule gets more difficult tonight as they host #8 Alabama at 9pm. That is just one of a hand full of SEC action underway tonight. The FS1 has a Big East doubleheader worth watching. Villanova travels to Storrs to take on Connecticut (6:30pm FS1). That is followed by Xavier taking on a surprising good St John's team.
(December 17, 2022) Exam week always brings a slow down to the action on the hardwood, but Saturday's slate of hoops kicks off the holiday week in style. We have 5 games with both teams ranked and every TOP 25 team in action. The one I am intrigued the most by is Houston at Virginia. This battle of two top 5 teams will likely come down to Houston's dominance on the glass. If Virginia can keep the rebounds in check, the Cavaliers could keep their perfect record in tack. This one tips off today at 2pm on ESPN2. A 1pm tip-off in Birmingham is another fun one to watch as Bama's Brandon Miller looks to improve his FOY status against Gonzaga. These two teams are sure not dodging anyone this year. Strength of Schedule will not be a problem for either of these teams come Selection Sunday. A noon tip off of two Scar Tissue teams will pair #14 Indiana at Allen Fieldhouse vs #8 Kansas. The PHOG will be rocking and if Indiana doesn't get back freshman Jalen Hood-Schifino for this one, it could get ugly quick. However, the place to be today will be Madison Square Gardens for the CBS Sports Classic. It will start at 3pm with UNC vs Ohio State and following is Kentucky vs UCLA. Two 9-1 teams in Tennessee vs Arizona is the nightcap. Enjoy the action and Merry Christmas!
(December 17, 2022) Maybe a down year for Alabama on the gridiron (2 losses?) but not on the hardwood as the Tide is riding the wave of newcomer and freshman of the year candidate Brandon Miller. The freshman sensation is averaging 18.5 ppg and grabbing 8+ boards. This past week he scored 32 points in the All-American (AAC) sweep of #1 Houston and Memphis. The record pulls Nate Oats team to 9-1 and Top 10 status. The schedule doesn't get easier as today's matchup is against a hungry ZAGS team looking to get on a role. Then the brutal SEC schedule starts.
The second march2madness results are up and I will try to get them out every 7-10 days from here until the tournament starts. Then they will be updated each round. Larry Brock currently leads the way and like so many other entries up top, he did not miss with his wildcard team. UNLV has got off to a hot 10-0 start under second year head coach, Kevin Kruger. Two other Mountain West teams have gotten off to undefeated starts. Several selections took Utah State (9-0) but we all missed on New Mexico (10-0). These three teams are going to make it difficult on SDSU (8-3) the Mountain. Mississippi State (10-0) is the other undefeated Wildcard selection.
(December 10, 2022) Everything seems right this year with the Houston Cougars. Kelvin Sampson's Cougars are undefeated at 9-0, injury free, and currently ranked number 1 in all the polls. There has been a lot of talk about an undefeated season, and that will be put to the test over the next two Saturdays. Today they will square off against #8 Alabama in a game featuring a healthy Marcus Sasser, their senior floor general who is scoring 17 minutes a game and The Tides Brandon Miller, a likely one-and-done NBA Lottery pick who is averaging 20 ppg. If the Cougars can get pass this one and next Saturday's game vs #3 Virginia, then we can start talking undefeated.
Today is the first Saturday without college football, outside of "The Game". It is time for the college hoops action to take priority. A couple big games on tap today as #1 Houston plays #8 Alabama, #10 Arizona vs #14 Indiana, an interesting march2madness matchup of St Mary's and SDSU. Then their is #6 Kansas, who will travel into Mizzou Arena to take on a surprising Missouri team who is 9-0 on the season. Enjoy the HOOPS!
(December 10, 2022) Today, I will be attending the Skyline Crosstown Shootout in person. The annual matchup of two teams, a few miles apart that truly do not like each other. This will be the first battle of the Millers. Both teams come into this one at 6-3. The Bearcats are in a slight rebuild under second year coach Wes Miller and despite their loss to NKU and an uninspiring trip to Maui, the Bearcats come into this one on a three game win streak where they scored 80 points and won by 20+. This year's Muskies have brought back Sean Miller and are one of the favorites in the Big East, There three losses are to Duke, Gonzaga and Indiana. All top 15 teams and the Indiana game went down to the wire. This should be a fun one to attend. I see this one coming down to Xavier's 3-point shooting. The Bearcats defense, although improving, will give the Musketeers some open looks, will they knock them down?
While there were several selections for Xavier in the Funky Monks category, only Dan Aelker selected Cincinnati as his wildcard. The game will be televised on ESPN2 at 3pm today.
(November 29, 2022) The deadline has passed and we had 169 entries entered online. I have another 50 emails to sort through, so the final tally should be around 225 march2madness entries. I will have those tallied and run a story on the selection percentages before the weekend. Until then, get your hoops fill with some exciting ACC/BIG10 matchups. Ones involving march2madness matchups include Virginia vs Michigan, Ohio State vs Duke, Michigan State vs Notre Dame, and UNC vs IU. However, the best game of the week may be on Thursday when #7 Creighton squares off against #2 Texas at the Moody Center. It has not taken Chris Beard long to make the Longhorns relevant again. Hunter, Carr, and Rice gives the Longhorns three guards on the court that can score. Each of them are shooting 37% from behind the arc and can drive to the hoop when necessary.
(November 27, 2022) As students of the game you started your two week crash course with a 2OT thriller as Michigan State outlast Kentucky on Nov 15th and finished up your studies today watching Alabama defeat UNC in 4OT. We can all be thankful that in between there were plenty of TOP 25 matchups. After a terrific Feast Week it is time to get this year's picks turned in. The DEADLINE IS MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28th at 7pm. You can enter online with the "ONLINE ENTRY FORM" tab above or email me at march2madness@gmail.com. Please feel free to get your friends and family involved. Currently sitting at 80+ entries and expecting 100+ more on Cyber Monday.
Here is a list of undefeated wildcard teams going into today: Missouri, Quinnipiac, UNLV, Drake, Kansas St, Maryland, Miss State, Ole Miss, Sam Houston, So. Miss, Yale, Iowa St, New Mexico, Seattle, and Utah State. Plenty of good one and two loss teams as well.
My two selections for march2madness 2022-23:
Mick McMullen (imcommish): North Carolina, Arizona, Notre Dame, Alabama, Michigan State, Tennessee, Purdue, Kent State
Mick McMullen (Californiacation): UCLA, Arkansas, Saint Mary's, SDSU, Ohio State, Texas, Illinois, UC Irvine
2022-23 march2madness breakdown (November 13, 2022)
Higher Ground: When you are looking for a team to win it all you look towards previous season success, returning players, good coaching, and POY candidates. With Oscar Tsheibwe(UK), Drew Timme(Zags), Armando Bacot(UNC), Marcus Sasser(Houston), and Jaime Jaquez Jr(UCLA) you have the top players and Scott Drew has maybe the most tantalizing POY/Freshman of the Year candiadate in Keyonte George. A tough group to pick from, which team do you trust to take the higher ground onto the podium in March?
Scar Tissue: Coach K and Jay Wright have departed leaving new coaches Jon Scheyer and Kyle Neptune in charge at Duke and NOVA. They both have talented squads to succeed but can they handle the XandOs? Kansas and Arizona lost a ton of talent to NBA draft and still have the 6 year NCAA investigation still hanging out there. Indiana fell apart at the end last season but returns Trayce Jackson-Davis, possibly the best player in the Big Ten. Eric Musselman's Razorbacks have 3 of the top 15 freshman, problem is Arkansas will rely on 3 freshman to navigate a strong SEC schedule.
Funky Monks: Probably the most challenging division as several of these schools could find themselves on the bubble come Selection Sunday. Mike Brey and Notre Dame could take advantage of a weaker ACC this season. Xavier should get a lift from Scott Miller in his second coaching stint at Xavier as the Muskies return Jack Nunge, Kevin Freemantle, and Colby Jones. Dayton gathered some points last season and are favorites in the A-10 again. Saint Mary's may never get over the Gonzaga hump but 25 win seasons add up in this contest. TCU is the highest ranked team in this category and Mike Miles Jr is a Big 12 POY candidate. St John's is not getting the love I think they deserve. Mike Anderson gets Illinois transfer Andre Curbelo to go along with Posh Alexander (2022 Big East Freshman of the year) to give the Red Storm one of the best guard combos in America.
Give it Away: Each of these teams had surprising success last season only to Give it Away in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Another shot a greatness should be in the cards for these six. Big Ten champion Iowa returns Kris Murray, whose dynamic play at 6-8 215lbs creates matchup nightmares for opponents. Everyone wants to love UConn and there return to the Big East. Dan Hurley enters year five with the Huskies and need several of his top recruiting class to step up to replace 65% of last year's scoring. The Crimson Tide are also reloading but a third straight tournament run should be in the cards. 5-star freshman Brandon Miller and Jaden Bradley lead the nations third ranked recruiting class. The Mountain West is poised to get multiple teams into the dance again this season but SDSU is the only one listed on the m2m sheet. The Aztecs are again one of the top 5 defensive teams in the nation. USC's days to claim another Pac12 title are numbered and they will enter the post-Mobley brothers era. Love the name Boogie Ellis? You will be saying it a lot if you take the Trojans. Last year's the Hokies won the ACC to deliver Mike Young his third straight NCAA appearance, first with Wolford then with Va Tech. This year's Hokies are good enough to keep the streak alive. With San Diego State and USC, this catagory was the closest I could come to Californiacation.
Under The Bridge: The Huron River flows through Ann Arbor, the Olentanga River borders the Columbus campus, and the Red Cedar River in Lansing. Maybe not typical river towns, but Michigan, OSU and MSU have the riverboat captains in Howard, Holtmann, and Izzo to finish high in the Big Ten standings. Michigan has Hunter Dickinson back, OSU has a top 8 recruiting class and a trio of transfers, while MSU takes a veteran squad up against a tough non-conference schedule of Gonzaga, Kentucky, Villanova, and Alabama. Jumping on an easier schedule drive across the Mississippi River, exit on the Beal Street Bridge to the Memphis. Penny Hardaway's Tigers will play Auburn and Alabama in back to back games in December but will enter AAC schedule with Houston as the only ranked conference opponent. Miami, FL is on Lake Osceola but campus is connected on both sides by the Fate Bridge. This year students will walk over the bridge to watch the Hurricanes improve on their fourth place showing in the ACC. The Monongahela River flows through the West Virginia campus were you will cross the West Over Bridge. West of campus is were most of the Mountaineers toughest games will be played. The toughest for Huggins might be a return to the Cintas Center to play Xavier. This will be Huggins first game coaching in the Queen City since his days with the Bearcats. Needless to say, Huggins is not well liked by Muskie fans.
By The Way: At least very close close to the highway, Via I-85 (Auburn), I-75 (Knoxville ), I-35 (Austin), I-64 (Charlottesville), I-65(Birmingham), 480 North Freeway(Omaha) are the teams that will crash your bracket or race you to the front of the pack. These teams are very exciting this year due to some of the top transfers in the country. Illinois has added the top rated transfer in Terrence Shannon, Jr (Texas Tech). Shannon is a tough to guard and gives the Illini another playmaker. Tyrese Hunter was the Big 12 freshman of the year at Iowa State. He brings his tough perimeter play to Chris Beard's Longhorns this season. Andy Kennedy is back at it again for UAB. Last year he brought in five transfer and the results was 27 wins for the Blazers. Coach Kennedy has done it again this season with another five transfers, led by Eric Gaines (LSU), that makes them the team to beat in Conference USA. Many consider Creighton the team to beat in the Big East but not much separates them from UConn, Xavier and Villanova. However, it may be a Jack Rabbit that gives the Blue Jays flight over the other three. Baylor Scheierman average 16 pts, 8 boards and 4 assist while shooting 45% from outside the arc last season for South Dakota State will be a nightmare for Big East defenses. Tony Bennett has had a roller coaster ride for the Cavilers recently. 2018 the Cavilers became the first 1 seed to lose a 16 seed (UMBC), turned around and hoisted the championship trophy the next season, followed that up with a first round loss to Ohio, and then went NIT shopping a year ago. Talk about losing to Ohio, the Cavs went out and signed Ben Vander Plas, who put down 17 points that night for the Bobcats. Tennessee landed Tyreke Key (Indiana State) to help offset the loss of John Fulkerson who may have played for UT for a decade (at least it seemed like it). The Vols big edition to a Top 20 squad comes in the form of high school standout Julian Phillips, a stud and potential SEC FOY.
Around The World: This group post multiple international players on their rosters. Purdue add 7'2" center Will Berg (Sweden) to go alongside dominant 7'4" Zach Edey (Canada). Brad Underwood's Fighting Illini is looking forward to RJ Melendez (Puerto Rico) taking the next step as he replaces Curbello at guard. He will join former UK commit Skyy Clark and transfer Terrance Shannon Jr to give the Illini a triple headed monster at guard. N'Faly Dante (Mali) led the Pac-12 last season with a 67.5 FG%. N'Faly welcomes freshman 7' center Kal'el Ware as the two try to slug there way back to the dance. The Ducks may have missed the tourney last season, but they have made a difference in past march2madness contest, as Altman's teams have played the second weekend in five of the last ten years. Jason Jitoboh (Nigeria) and Aleks Szymczyk (Germany) are depth pieces for Coach Golden, but his analytical approach appreciates the additions of Kyle Lofton (St Bonaventure) and the breakout possibility of sophomore guard Kowacie Reeves. Last year, Texas A&M led the nation in steals with 398. Buzz Williams has added defensive stalwart Khalen Robinson (Arkansas) as Aggies try to top their 27 win season from a year ago. Mark Adams had to get busy rebuilding the Red Raiders and landed four freshman (#19 recruiting class) along with five transfers. The best transfer is probably the top center in the portal in Fardaw Aimaq (Utah Valley). The center from Vancouver and two-time WAC Defensive Player of the Year, averaged 19 points and 13 rebounds for Utah Valley.
march2madness is back for a 21st season and this year's edition pays tribute to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Generation X remembers them from their 1991 alblum Blood Sugar Sex Magik where Millennials cherish the 1999 release of Californication. Another generation gets a taste of Peppers funk rock style with the 2022 release of Return of the Dream Canteen. The march2madness contest is up and running with the categories of Higher Ground (teams expecting to be up on the podium), Scar Tissue (teams with some noticeable problems), Funky Monks (religious institutions), Give It Away (teams who lost 1st round of tournament last season), Under The Bridge (schools that reside next to rivers), By The Way (schools that reside next to highways), and Around The World (teams with multiple international players).
The contest deadline is Monday, November 28th at 5 pm. Below is a quick review of each category. To enter see "Rules and Entry Form" . The "Study Hall" link is also back to give you some different website views and prepare your picks.
2021-22 march2madness
When Caleb Love missed the game tying 3 pointer at the buzzer, Kansas completed the comeback victory to take home the title. The comeback was the theme for this year's march2madness contest, as our winner, Larry Brock, made a comeback of his own. Larry, a teacher at Talawanda Middle School in Hamilton, OH trailed by 31.5 points coming into the dance. Larry said round two of the tournament, when UNC knocked off Baylor, and Miami beat Auburn, was when he knew he had a shot. He will be taking home $4050 for his winning entry. Matt Wells, who is a big Kentucky Wildcat fan and spends several days a year visiting his daughter on the Lexington campus, took home second place. Matt had the lone entry with Kansas and UNC and will take home $810. Matt started 34 points out and it took a Kansas victory to finish in the money. Tyler Meyer got the inside scoop serving as a student manager at Ohio State under Coach O'Brien and Coach Matta. Has that been the difference in winning march2madness in 2015 and taking third place ($270) this season? Well running the contest has never paid of for Mick McMullen, until this season. After 20 seasons, I finally get $162 return. A fellow parishioner at St Mary's Church, David Kamphaus finished fourth ($108) behind his UNC wildcard selection. I will be reviewing the results in detail over the next 24 hours. The contest will become official at midnight on 4/6/22 if I (or anyone else) don't find any mistakes.
Here is what the perfect sheet would have looked like: Kansas (87.5), Michigan (40), Michigan State(26), Houston (59.5), Xavier(26.5), Arizona(44.5), UNC (89) and St Peters(50)
Hope to see everyone back next season.
Monday April 4, 2022 Kansas Jayhawks became the first team to comeback from a 16 point deficit to win the National Championship, defeating North Carolina 72-69 ending a thrilling tournament. The Jayhawks started the game on a 7-0 run, then the Tar Heels settled in, got the Kansas MicCormack and Lightfoot in foul trouble, and cruised into halftime up 15 points. In the second half, Kansas again came out on fire and played with a sense of urgency that was not there the first half. Martin, Wilson, Braun struggled shooting in the first half, but were 13 of 18 from the field in the second half. However, it was the bigs play that won the Championship for the Jayhawks. McCormack stayed on the floor in the second half, responded with a double double, and made the critical shots at the end of the game. One to take the lead with under two minutes and the other to put the Jayhawks up three with less than 20 seconds to play. Agbaji was solid with 12 points and took home MOP honors.
Caleb Love struggled shooting long range on Monday night but still had a chance to send the game into overtime but missed a long three at the buzzer. He and RJ Davis finished 10 for 41. Armando Bacot became the first player to get a double-double in each of the six tournament games, but was hobbled and eventually turned his ankle again late in the contest. With prices so high, we shouldn't be surprised that they ran out of gas.
Caleb Love scored 23 of his 28 points in the second half including the nail in the coffin three to send Duke back home to tobacco road. It was another instant classic to the Duke/UNC rivalry, one which the Tar Heels provided Coach Krzyzewski with his final dance. The Blue Devils talent kept shining throughout the night with NBA first rounders Paolo Banchero, AJ Griffin and Mark WIlliams providing timely buckets, but Love was in the air and unstoppable in the second half. Throw in a couple big shots from Davis and Manek, and the night again belonged to the Tar Heels "Iron Five" who played 187 minutes. An unlucky 13th trip for the Blue Devils, but lucky 21st appearance for the Tar Heels. That 21 is also the total rebounds for Armando Bacot on this night.
North Carolina has now scored 65 tournament points and 89 points overall if you took them in the MINING category. The Top 10 entries all have UNC. Next up KANSAS on Monday Night. Larry Brock is all smiles tonight.
I considered Kansas as the favorite to win this tournament as soon as Remy Martin got back on the floor and started resembling his Sun Devil self. This Jayhawk team seems to flow offensively when he is on the court. In Nola, the Jayhawks turned to All-American Ochai Agbaji. He had struggled for much of the tournament making only four of his 3-point attempts. Tonight her sparked the Jayhawks, hitting 6 of 7 from behind the arch and led them to the title game with 21 points. David McCormick was also a Saturday Night Special, scoring 25 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. The matchup of McCormick and Bacot will be front and center on Monday. This was Jay Wright's fourth trip to the Final Four were he had won the previous two. Like all Wildcats, when they were beat down they fought back. Pulling to within 6 with 5 minutes to play, but a couple key buckets from Braun put them away.
Matt Wells is 55.5 points back and can sneak into the money with a Jayhawks win.
Saturday, April 2, 2022 After a lackluster Elite Eight, here we are on Final Four Saturday with four Blue Chip programs ready to showcase their talents. We have HOF coaches, McDonald's All-Americans, rivalries, and for the first time, each program in the Final Four has won multiple championships. Game 1 is a rematch of the the 2018 Final Four semi final where Villanova squares off against Kansas. Can Villanova ride the same path of beating the Jayhawks and Tar Heels again? Or will Bill Self get out of the way and let Remy Martin and Ochai Agbaji do their thing. The nightcap will provide another storybook ending to the Duke/UNC rivalry. Will Coach K get revenge for senior night or will the Blue Devils be UNACCEPTABLE again. As much as we make this about Coach K, this game will come down to the players and refs. Paolo Banchero has been playing his best ball in the final 10 minutes of games to lift Duke into the Final Four. But the emergence of AJ Griffin and Jeremy Roach has completed the Duke starting five. Well it's UNC's starting five that is playing the best basketball in the tournament with Armando Bacot controlling the boards, Leaky Black shutting down the other team's best player and the offensive trio of Love, Davis, and Manek getting hot on different nights. However, like we saw in the Baylor game, a few foul calls by the refs can ruffle the Tar Heels quickly. In the first game against Duke, Bacot picked up two fouls in the first two minutes and by the time he returned to action, the Tar Heels were down 20 points. If the Tar Heels keep out of foul trouble this game should come down to the wire and be a high scoring affair.
The biggest Tar Heel fan (outside of myself) today will be the march2madness points leader, Larry Brock. He looks to complete his terrific tournament run with a North Carolina victory. It looks like even if Duke wins, he can still survive if Nova/Kansas winner beats them. Looking for the Coach K storybook ending will be Ty Meyer who sits 22 points back. Yours truly finally finds himself currently in the money after 20 years finishing in the bottom half. Dave Kamphaus in fourth will also be cheering on North Carolina, while Hannah Booktrove is a Blue Devil today. Hannah lost out on her chance to win it this past Tuesday when St Bonaventure lost to Xavier in the NIT. Xavier took the NIT and I added those 15 points to the updated results last night. I think the Kansas/Villanova entries are too far back to take first but certainly could land in the money if the cards fall perfectly.
ELITE EIGHT: Here we are and the march2madness results are still up in the air. Larry Brock continues his underdog run collecting another 38 pts with Arkansas, UNC, and Miami. He is now up 29 pts but lost Gonzaga in the Sweet 16. Ty Meyer is second place and top with Duke and Houston. Purdue's loss hurt his chances. Hannah Booktrove is in third and her squid game choice of Houston is helping her out. St Bonaventure winning the NIT could certainly help as well. They take on Xavier Tuesday. Mark Thiem sits 59 back with Villanova. Not sure if he can make up that much ground, but second place is certainly in his sight. Same goes for Mike Kammerer and Matt Wells with Kansas. I would say there are 25+ people that can end up in the top 5 slots for a pay day. This has been a fun year.
Razorbacks got a couple double digit seeds in Vermont and New Mexico State to start the tournament nut then slayed #1 Gonzaga. They are now 1-9 vs #1 seeds in the tournament.
Duke has played some incredible basketball in the last 8 minutes of their tournament games. I am a bit worried about those first 32 minutes of hoops. Can Coach K's run continue?
Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels have something no one else has in the Elite 8, National Championship rings. Can the experience be a difference maker against the Cougars?
Cougars are showing the committee why they overvalue Quad 1 victories. Houston was 29-5, winners of the AAC league and tournament and slighted with a #5 seed. They may be the favorite now.
The Peacocks have already beaten #2, #3, #7 in the East Regional, #8 should be an easy task, right? Don't call them a Cinderella, not one of you took advantage of this team worth 55 pts
UNC has probably the best wins of the Elite 8 teams knocking off Marquette, Baylor and UCLA. Brady Manek stepped it up against the Warriors, RJ Davis vs Bears, and Love vs Bruins. Who comes through vs the Peacocks?
The last #1 standing.
ROCK CHALK
JAYHAWK
Miami had the easiest Sweet 16 win of the bunch, defeating Iowa State by 14 behind Kameron McGusty's 27 pts. Their win gives the ACC three Elite 8 teams.
There will be plenty of march2madness eyes watching this Sweet 16. Eighteen entries are within 25 points of first place. Well within striking distance considering the title game is worth that many points. Larry Brock has made an enticing run to the top slot, but can his underdogs (UNC, Miami, Arkansas) continue their March runs? The top entries are loaded with Arizona picks, but Andrew Fuller sits just 23 points back with Texas Tech. A Red Raider Final Four may lead to green for Andrew. Hannah Booktrove did not turn in a Cinderella team despite St Bonaventure not making the tournament. The Bonnies are heading to Madison Square Gardens this week for the NIT Final Four. 15 NIT Championship points could make a big difference as she currently sits 10 points back of first.
Tonight's action tips off at 7:09 as JD Notae tries to deliver another upset for the Razorbacks vs top seed Gonzaga. This will be a tough task as well as Drew Timme is playing. I am very interested in the night cap match up of Houston and Arizona. This is the one Sweet 16 match up that I can see the winner in the Championship game. Tomorrow, you have to watch St Peters continue their Cinderella trail. Enjoy!
March 21, 2022: What a fantastic weekend of college hoops. We started round two watching the defending champs erase a 25 point lead only to come up short to the Tar Hills in OT, then end the weekend with another overtime thriller that saw a game winning dunk erased in regulation and a bigger dunk to ice it for Arizona in overtime. Then there is the Houston Cougars and UCLA Bruins who seem to be forgotten in this year's bracket. These two teams return a lot of the same players who were in the Final Four last year. UCLA's starting five scored 68 of their 72 points in their win over St Mary's. Johnny Juzang is starting to get his 2021 swag back, however, Jaime Jacquez Jr is questionable with an ankle for their Sweet 16 matchup with UNC. Houston took care of business in a big way rolling Illinois in the second half, winning by 15 points. Talk about forgotten, how about the two Sweet 16 teams that no one in march2madness has. The Peacocks of St Peters are still flying high after defeating Kentucky and Murray State. That would have been 35 points for someone. Providence is a different story. They were a #4 seed that no one took as their wildcard and couldn't take as their Cinderella.
The march2madness results are posted and we have a new leader. Larry Brock was in 20th place (-18.5) coming into round 2, but cleaned up with wins by Gonzaga, Michigan, Arkansas, Arizona, North Carolina, and Miami. Yes, that's an 6,8,10,11 seed to go along with two #1 seeds. That is how the contest is played (luck). Jason Merz had a successful first round run and finds himself just 0.5 back. It looks like it could come down to the survivor of the Squid Game. Arkansas, Purdue and Houston are all playing like Final Four teams.
Most memorable moments of Round 2
Kennedy Chandler left it all on the court Saturday, and Juwan Howard comforted him off the court. It was a very touching moment of empathy and unlike a month ago, this handshake line has no one is calling for Coach Howard's job.
UNC's collapse? Baylor's combat? Call it what you want but I call it an embarrassment for the NCAA. The refs let this get out of control early on, then they completely fell apart with their calls. It was a total fiasco. As long as we are talking about officiating, who is ready to get rid of the under 2:00 review? Are they unsure of every call? Come on man!
One final round for Izzo-Krzyzewski. Coach K comes out on top again, takes the Izzo series 13-3
Proud as a Peacock. St Peter's becomes the third #15 seed to advance to the Sweet 16. Oral Roberts did it last year.
Memphis would not go away on Saturday night, but Drew Timme stepped it up when needed. He finished the game with 25pts, 14 reb, and 4 assist as Gonzaga rallies in the second half and advance 82-78.
Saturday, March 19, 2022 Well this whole NCAA tournament is nothing but a crapshoot, this was evident on Friday when the #7 and #11 were the big winners. Iowa State's December success led to them being one of the most popular Wildcard teams selected this season. They struggled a bit in Big 12 action and came into the tournament as an #11 seed. TJ Otzelberger's squad may just be a "tournament team". Friday they knocked LSU out of the bracket. Another #11 seed to win was Notre Dame, who currently leads the field with 22 tournament points. After 2OT thriller in the First Four, it was a bit easier for the Irish on Friday beating BAMA by 14 points. Both #7 seeds also came through on day two, with Ohio State closing the door quickly on Loyola-Chicago, holding the Fighting Sister Jeans to 41 points. #7 Michigan State had a tougher time, taking their first lead with 30 seconds left to defeat Davidson 74-73.
Every year I am surprised to look back at the pre-season predictions and see how accurate they turn out to be. Maybe we should quit watching the conference tournaments and focus more on November predictions when filling out our brackets. We get sucked into Iowa, Virginia Tech, and Boise State when they make their one week runs. Looking back at Dick Vitale's pre-season Top 10, his first nine all advanced to round two and are in good shape for Sweet 16 appearances. His top 10 were Gonzaga, UCLA, Texas, Michigan, Kansas, Memphis, Villanova, Purdue, Baylor, and missed on #10 Alabama.
The results for round one have been posted and yours truly has vaulted all the way up to fifth place thanks in large part to Notre Dame. I haven't finished in the top 100 in years and never top 20. I am now just waiting for today's free fall to mediocrity, I started the tournament 29.5 points back. Making a bigger leap is Jason Merz, who started 31 points back, selected Notre Dame and has now taken a slim lead. All eight of his teams will be playing this weekend. Both Silvio Bohannon, Justin Malzahn, Patrick McGlone kept towards the top in second, third, fourth place but have already loss several of their teams.
Keep the fridge stocked, find a nice comfortable place on the sofa and get ready for a crazy weekend of hoops. ENJOY!
Day 1: After one day the St Mary's Peacocks are flying high as this year's Cinderella. They come in as the #15 seed and pull off the day 1 biggest upset, defeating the UK Wildcats 85-79 in OT. Many of you had to replace Iona as your original wildcard, mainly because St Peter's won the MAAC title and the opportunity to wear the glass slipper. The Peacocks become the tenth 15 seed to advance. They will play the Murray State in round two. Why do we always talk about the #12 seeds? Well day one saw #12 New Mexico State down UConn and #12 Richmond beat Iowa. That second game was the big one for the march2madness results. Iowa, Indiana, and South Dakota State were all heavy Cinderella selections. All three loss on Thursday, however, Indiana tallied 12 points previously. Those Cinderella changes have been posted under the Scoreboard. Please note the First Four points have NOT been added yet. If any sees something wrong, please let me know before games start on Saturday so I can check your email. I had another 150+ emails to sort through and it took me well over 5 hours between last night and tonight. Bad night for the Mountain West who go 0-4 on the day. Good day for the Selection Committee who put together competitive contest resulting in four overtimes already, many upsets, and late night viewership. Those who stayed up to watch the Murray State vs San Francisco night cap were rewarded with a fantastic OT game.
Thursday, March 17, 2022 Well it took 2 OT, 17 lead changes and for the clock to flip over to St Patrick's Day before Paul Atkinson put back the game winning shot as Notre Dame and the Luck of the Irish defeat Rutgers 89-87. This was a tremendous battle as Ron Harper Jr and Geo Baker did everything they could to hit big shots for Rutgers. However, it was a lack of defense and not getting key rebounds that cost Rutgers in closing out the Irish. In the end, Rutgers was just unlucky. 11 points to those with the Irish with 12 going to the Indiana after the Hoosiers beat Wyoming on Tuesday. I think this is just the beginning of an overtime laden tournament so enjoy the madness. I have most of the Cinderella picks but if you haven't turned them in, you have until noon. I will have the first round results posted Saturday morning.
Happy St Patrick's Day!
The brackets were revealed and as expected, Gonzaga, Arizona, Kansas, and Baylor are on the top lines. All of these teams except Kansas have enjoyed time at #1 this season with Gonzaga holding down the spot for several weeks now. Baylor and Gonzaga were in this spot last season and faced off in the the Championship game. That road seems to be tougher for both this season. Gonzaga could face Memphis in round 2, with Arkansas, UConn, Texas Tech and Duke all lurking in the West Region. Baylor could face a talented UNC team in the second round, and have UCLA to beat just to get into the Elite 8. The bottom half of the East bracket I see Purdue and UK, each talented enough to win it all, along with a Virginia Tech team that no one wants to play right now. Baylor vs Gonzaga in a Final Four matchup looks unlikely. Tommy Lloyd has to like the South region as it appears the easiest road to the Final Four of any of the #1 seeds. Bill Self cannot be as thrilled with Iowa, Auburn, Wisconsin, USC, Providence, Creighton and yes South Dakota State all capable of Final Four runs.
The Big 10 did not get a #1 seed but they did put 9 teams into the tournament. That is three more teams then any other conference. Indiana, Michigan, and Rutgers all snuck in with the Hoosiers and Scarlet Knights playing in Dayton in the Opening Round.
Then their is Coach K making his 36th and last appearance in the tournament. The legendary coach won the National Title in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015 and will be searching for number six as they open up against Cal State Fullerton. I have not seen the schedule yet but Saturdays in March have not been kind to the Blue Devils. First losing Coach K's final home game vs UNC and then this past Saturday they get rolled by a thirsty Virginia Tech team in the ACC Championship. Little doubt Coach K has the most talent on the floor but can he get them to come together as a team for a final run.
Kentucky is listed as a #2 seed but have the #1 player on the court with Oscar Tshiebwe. When Oscar is on the floor the Wildcats grabbed 40% of their miss shots. Those second chance points drain their opponents. This team along with fellow SEC teams Tennessee and Auburn have legit shots at cutting down the nets in NOLA.
Which team is this year's Cinderella? Well that is for each of you to decide. Remember, the tournament scoring is based on the seed of the team. For each line Gonzaga advances, they receive 1 point where Michigan can tally 11 points with each time they advance. There are also bonus points given for advancing to the Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final Four, etc... The other thing that will throw the contest upside down are the Cinderella teams. This season we are back to ONE Cinderella. Each entry is allowed to replace one of their teams that did not make the tournament with a Cinderella team (#5 - #16 seed). So if you have three teams that did not make the tournament, you can only replace one of them. If each of your teams made the tournament, you have the option to still replace one of those teams for a Cinderella team if you choose. There is quite the selection of Cinderella teams this season including the ACC, Big Ten, and A-10 tournament champs. First Four teams are always an interesting play for some cheap and quick points. Having Indiana, Wyoming, Notre Dame and Rutgers available is a pleasant surprise for those entries 30+ points off the lead. Several interesting conference winners are available as well. #13 South Dakota State, #14 Colgate, #16 Norfolk State, #13 Vermont, and #13 Chattanooga all won their conference and tournament titles. The only team no one will have is Providence. The Friars did not make a bitcoin category, did not get selected as a wildcard team, and cannot be selected as a Cinderella since they are a #4 seed. Remember, there is still around 40% of the total points to be awarded during March Madness and strange things happen. Here is the tournament scoring:
NCAA TOURNAMENT SCORING (includes “First Four” games)
+Seed number for each NCAA Tournament win (if #6 seed wins three games=18 points)
+5 Sweet 16, Elite Eight, and Final Four Appearances
+10 Final Four Win
+25 NCAA Tournament Champ
+15 NIT Champion
You can email me at march2madness@gmail.com with your Cinderella selection starting tonight, but I would ask you to consider holding off until the COVID-19 replacement deadline which is Monday at 10pm. The current order of replacement teams, according to the Selection Committee is Dayton, Oklahoma, SMU, and Texas A&M (however, I think we are good).
The deadline for submitting the Cinderella selections will be noon on Thursday 3/17/22. If picking a First Four team then they need to be delivered before tip-off of that game on Tuesday/Wednesday. I will try to send out an email on Tuesday night to remind everyone. Good luck with your selections.
Check back at 8pm tonight for updated results and Cinderella instructions
Sunday, March 13, 2022 What a terrific week of basketball and an even more exciting Championship Saturday which we saw 15 teams punch their ticket to the dance. I think the three teams to the left have earned a #1 seed in tonight's drawing. Gonzaga, Arizona and Kansas all won their regular season and league tournament. Despite the love that Baylor is getting, I think the fourth #1 seed is still up in the air. That is this week's STARTING FIVE:
Purdue: Like Baylor they were ranked #1 in the nation with their hot start to begin the season. Unlike Baylor they have a chance to cut down the nets today in the Big 10 Championship game vs Iowa. If this is a conference getting 9 teams into the dance, shouldn't the best get rewarded?
Tennessee: 11-1 since the beginning of February, second place in the SEC regular season but with a chance to hoist the SEC tourney trophy today against a red hot Texas A&M team. What hurts the Vols chances will be their slow start to the season. Their current record 25-7.
Villanova: Was cut short of winning the Big East regular season as Providence won it while playing two less games. The Wildcats are 26-7, won 10 out of 11, and won the Big East tournament with a low scoring 54-48 victory over Creighton. The Wildcats beat Tennessee but lost to Purdue early on.
Houston: Don't be so quick to write off the American Athletic Conference regular season champs. Last year the Cougars were a Final Four teams and a win today will give them a 29-5 record with the double up of the conference and tourney title. However, Lil' Penny says don't count out the Tigers today as they have won both contest versus Houston this season.
Baylor: I am sure you all know the man crush I have on Coach Drew, but I have always said you should not have a #1 seed if you can't when your Conference tournament or league title. Will a 26-6 record and a Co-Championship with Kansas get them in? I just find it hard to believe the Committee will reward a team that looked lifeless in an opening round loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship.
Talk about the double, how did we all miss Murray State (30-2), Longwood (26-6), and Vermont (28-5) who all won their league and tourney titles?
While Xavier, Michigan, Wake Forest, Rutgers, and Florida decided to make it easy on the committee and lose their first tourney games, Virginia Tech decided to earn their way in. After sweating out an OT thriller to Clemson, the Hokies dominated Notre Dame, North Carolina and Duke on their way to an ACC title. Texas A&M is trying a similar task today in the SEC Championship.
March 7, 2022 Championship week is here and the tournament field will be revealed next Sunday at 6pm EST. There will be some exciting basketball played between now and then with bubbles bursting, buzzer beaters, and nets being cut down. Today I updated the march2madness standings to include 3 bonus points to the regular season conference champ (split if co-champs). This week conference winners will receive 5 points for the automatic berth while at-large bids get 3 points. After the tournament draw on Sunday, each of you can substitute ONE of your teams with a Cinderella team. This will be a team seeded between 5-16 and I will post more on that next Sunday. Enjoy an exciting week and get ready to dance.
March 5, 2022 It's time to get crazy one last time for Coach K as he takes the court named after him one last time. Coach K broke his mini UNC losing streak by throttling the Tar Heels a few weeks ago. This time he will face the Tar Heels in front of the Cameron Crazies along with many of his former players. All 204 former players have been invited to attend the contest. Duke will have to control their emotions and get off to the same hot start they did last time, while UNC will need Armando Bacot to stay out of foul trouble. They Tar Heels have little depth and no one on the boards when he is on the pine. Believe it or not, this is Duke's first ACC title since 2010. Can UNC spoil the celebration in Durham tonight?
Although Duke vs UNC is always a most watch, the ESPN appetizer at 4pm is Texas vs Kansas. Kansas went into last Saturday's matchup vs Baylor with a chance to clinch the Big 12 title, but instead flopped in the second half, then turned around and lost to TCU on Tuesday. They now share the lead and will have to beat the Longhorns today to share the title. The Longhorns won the first game in Austin by three, but this contest is in the PHOG and Kansas has Remy Martin back.
The ESPN nightcap has USC traveling to Pauley Pavilion to take on their rival UCLA Bruins. Most of the entries in the top of march2madness has one of these two teams, if not both. Arizona has already won the Pac 12, this will be a battle for second place and the two seed in next week's tournament. Without the cool name of Johnny Juzang, Jaime Jasquez, Jr, or Tyger Campbell, one Jules Bernard has stepped up to give the Bruins the needed lift from a fourth scoring option.
The best game of the day could be the noon start as the Razorbacks and Vols battle in Knoxville. The Razorbacks could be the hottest team in the country, winning 13 of their last 14 games. JD Notae is so exciting and explosive. If you haven't watch Arkansas play, get us to it. They will be making a deep run in the SEC tourney. Tennessee is also on a run of late, going 11-2 in their last 13. That includes wins over Kentucky and Auburn.
The bubble teams needing wins today would include:
UNC gets a Golden Ticket if they beat Duke
Florida also gets the Golden Ticket if they can beat UK (coming off an Auburn win 2 weeks ago)
The Hoosiers are on a rollercoaster with Big Wins and Bad Losses. Today they can help keep themselves on the right side of the bubble by beating Purdue.
Oregon and Michigan both need to rebound from Thursday night losses. Oregon takes on Washington State while Michigan ends it regular season against Ohio State. These two teams are not playing like they want in.
Well last season Baylor won their first men's basketball championship. Which teams this year are poised to fill their empty trophy case with some hardware?
Auburn: Experienced head coach; check, Bruce Pearl among the best in the game. Playmaker; check, Jabari Smith a 6'-10" freshman forward is among the best in the game with the game on the line. He also shoots 43% from behind the arc. Defense; check, Walker Kessler leads the country in blocks with 4.5 bpg.
Purdue: The most offensive-efficient team in the country with the country's best inside out game. Zach Edey and Trevion Williams can be unstoppable inside, and leading scorer Jaden Ivey is another playmaker like you need to win those close contest.
Gonzaga: Yes, they will be the #1 seed and yes, they probably have the most NBA talent on this list. But I do not believe they are as tough as last year's team, especially after losing Jalen Suggs to the draft lottery last season.
Texas: Chris Beard is one of the best tournament coaches in the sport. Nine wins in his last three appearances.
South Dakota State: They get put on this list just so I can write JACKRABBITS and the fact they shot 45% from 3-pt range making 297 this season. There has been a surprise run in each of the past five tournaments, why not a hot shooting Jackrabbit team?
(February 27, 2022) Well it is too early for March Madness but this last week in February has certainly given us a teaser to things to come. Earlier this week we saw an 3OT thriller with Xavier and Providence, it took USC 2OT to overcome a 3 win Oregon State team, Baylor survive an OT scare from a .500 OK State but nothing compared to the traffic jam on Saturday as the TOP 6 all lost on the road. This was the first time that the Top 6 teams came away winless on the same day. In fact, seven of the Top 10 went down as Texas Tech was defeated by a struggling TCU team. I think the best battle on this exhausting day of games was the battle between Oscar Tshibwe and JD Notoe, which both ended up with 30 points, in Arkansas' 2 point win over Kentucky. These are two of the most exciting players in the nation and continue to step up big when it counts.
No. 1 Gonzaga at Saint Mary's: lost 67-57.
No. 2 Arizona at Colorado: lost 79-63.
No. 3 Auburn at No. 18 Tennessee: lost 67-62.
No. 4 Purdue at Michigan State: lost 68-65.
No. 5 Kansas at No. 10 Baylor: lost 80-70.
No. 6 Kentucky at No. 18 Arkansas: lost 75-73.
I knew there was a reason I was waiting a day for the updates but they are now posted. Not much has changed up top, but it seems that everyone is getting a little bit closer in this chaos. Smaller conferences start up their tournaments this week but championship points will not be added to the scoring until all tournaments are complete. Also of note, Chris Clark's "Sunday Buzz" sheet was deleted from the worksheet which I realized this week when receiving his payment. That sheet was in 200th place and explains why I have had a blank slot at the bottom of the worksheet. I have his original email if anyone is concerned.
(February 19, 2022) We are only a month out from the first weekend of the NCAA tournament and teams on the bubble need to start putting together some quality wins. This weekend we will concentrate on those bubble teams playing each other, "Dubble Bubble" games. The ACC likely has three teams already in with Duke, Notre Dame and Wake Forest (later two play today), a down year by the ACC, the following teams need a win on this Dubble Bubble Saturday. UNC(18-8) had their first "bad loss" of the season this week losing to Pitt, however, they also do not have any Quad 1 wins on the season. They get that opportunity today to pick up a quality road win as they travel to Blacksburg to take on Va Tech(16-10). Virginia Tech received a lot of love in the preseason but struggled when ACC play started. They have righted the ship lately winning 6 straight and getting back into the bubble conversation. Miami (19-7) was winning the ACC at one time coming off a win over Duke. Since then it's been a rollercoaster ride and they currently sit in third place. Today Coach Larranaga's team host a Virginia (16-10) team that has won 4 of 5 including a 71-58 win over the Hurricanes two weeks ago. In the Big East, Fox Sports will air a noon tipoff in Storrs were a struggling Xavier (17-8) takes on UConn (18-7). Xavier has loss on it's home court the past couple weeks to both DePaul and St John's. The Musketeers will need to repeat their efforts from a week ago when the beat the Huskies 74-68. Dan Hurley's team looks to be on the right side of the bubble but have a stretch against X, Nova and Creighton on the horizon. In the West Coast Conference, St Mary's (21-6) will host BYU (19-8) in the nightcap on ESPN2. If you watch this game, pay attention to two of the best 3-point shooters in the country. Cougar guard Alex Barcello has been lighting it up for a couple seasons now shooting 47% from behind the arc. The Gaels also can light it up with guard Tommy Kuhse, who shots it at 45%. On Sunday, there is a battle to see who is the front runner for the American's second team in. Memphis (15-8) has won six straight since I put them on the most disappointing teams a few weeks back. SMU (18-6) sits in second place and looks to finish off it's competition in this two bid league. The Big10 and SEC has bubble teams playing against ranked opponents today. In the Big 12 TCU, OK State, Iowa State, Oklahoma and West Virginia have been mentioned as bubble teams. Well they all have losing conference record and I am a long time believer that if you can't go .500 in conference play, you don't deserve to be in the tournament field.
Below is the list of mid-major teams that I think could pose a threat to the big boys in March. Much of this list is based on the NET rankings as last season the top 41 NET teams made the NCAA tournament.
Murray State (25-2): The Racers have snuck up on a again. At 25-2 they have the best record in the country and appear on exactly ZERO march2madness entries. They may no longer have Ja Morant but they do have a NET ranking of 23. They have knocked off mid-major competition in beating Middle Tennessee, Chattanooga, and Belmont along the way. Even if Belmont upsets them in the Conference Finals, Murray State should find themselves dancing.
Loyola-Chicago (20-5): Yes the Fighting Sister Jeans are still around. This year Drew Valentine took over for Porter Moser and took on some mid-tier majors this season. Loyola has wins over Arizona State, Vanderbilt, DePaul, and San Francisco. This has helped them to a NET ranking of 28.
Colorado State (21-3): Yes the Rams are in third place in the Mountain West, but they are on a five game win streak, NET ranking 25, and have David Roddy. Roddy is a dynamic player averaging 20 pts, 8 boards, and can dish the ball when needed. The Ram's junior guard could be the top mid-major player in the country and will be playing in a NBA arena near you. Colorado State controls it's own destiny with upcoming games against UNLV, Wyoming, and Boise State.
South Dakota State (23-4): The Jack Rabbits are popping out wins again this season. They join Murray State and Gonzaga as the only teams without a conference loss this season. That would be 15 straight W for the Jack Rabbits. They maybe be dominating the Summit but stand only 72 in NET ranking. However, if they finish with their streak intact, then they could end up a 12 seed and we know no one wants to face a 12 seed.
Iona (21-5): Rick Patino's squad already beat Alabama this season, defeated Liberty in the MAAC/ASUN Challenge, and looks to wrap up the MAAC next week. Currently the Gaels have a 3 game lead and look to wrap it up against last place teams next week. Iona has a high RPI but a low NET rank. As in the past, this will come down to another Sienna vs Iona MAAC final to decide who goes dancing.
Sorry hoopsters, no lengthy story this week as I am headed to LA for the Super Bowl. I work for a great company and can't thank them enough for this opportunity to cheer on the Bengals. I did update the stats before I left and Brad Comerford has taken over the lead. Several people up top had a bad week and standings switched up and down the board. We had yet another #1 go down as Auburn looses to Arkansas. That was coming off a struggle with South Carolina last weekend. Both UCLA and Arizona loss to lowly Arizona State, and Baylor was spanked by Kansas. Anyway, off to the west coast. WHO DEY
Coach K will head to Chapel Hill on Saturday with a 49-46 record against the Tar Heels. He will get no love from the fans nor UNC. No tribute, gifts or memorabilia will be handed out. The only thing the Tar Hills want for Coach K is his third straight defeat in the rivalry. I am not sure why you want to fire up the Blue Devils who are already a heavy favorite for tonight's contest. Despite going for his 50th career win over UNC, Coach K is only 17-23 in Chapel Hill but many of those games are classics with blood, sweat and tears. In 2020, the Devils won an overtime thriller as Wendell Moore put back a Tre Jones air ball at the buzzer to win it 98-96. That was Duke's only victory in the last five seasons in Chapel Hill. I think the most exciting game was the Austin Rivers 3-pointer at the buzzer in 2012 that snapped the Tar Heels 31 game home streak. Tonight's matchup will come down to a couple things. 1) Tar Heels run through Caleb Love. When he has a big game the Tar Heels prevail. When there is no Love, the Tar Heels can look lost. 2) Without Dawson Garcia, UNC is thin inside. Paolo Banchero and Mark Williams are difficult matchups for the Heels. If Bacot and Manek get into foul trouble. It could get ugly quick.
We do have a number of other contest to get excited about watching today. After last week's home court thumping by Kentucky, Kansas looks to right the ship at Baylor. The Bears have been hit by the injury bug this week, but look to the Waco crowd for inspiration. Today's Top 10 battle could decide which of these teams are deserving of a #1 seed. BYU started out 17-4 and looked to be the West Coast conference team that had the best chance in knocking off the Zags. The Cougars have now loss three straight and Alex Barcello will need a lot of help in the night cap as Gonzaga rolls into town on a scoring frenzy. Illinois is coming off a big victory over Wisconsin, could today's afternoon trip to Bloomington be a trap game? The Big Ten has had Purdue, Michigan State, and Wisconsin look like they could take control of the Big10 and backtrack. Well now is Illinois turn to put up or shut up at the top of the standings.
Speaking of standings, Silvio Bohannon continues to rule the top of the leaderboard. The top 4 slots are his entries but they have take a bit of a hit lately. BYU looks like a team that has been figured out. UCLA, after beating Arizona turned around and looked lifeless against them this past week. So what is keeping his entries at the top? It is his wildcard teams, as time and time again it is the smaller schools that make the difference in this contest. Iona, South Dakota State, and Weber State are all on 8+ game win streaks. Just remember, no one has ever held the top slot during the regular season and won march2madness. A lot of hoops to be played still. Get those payments in.
Also noticed today, that Illinois and Louisville were getting each others points. That has been corrected. Please let me know if you notice anything like this. I have spot checked several teams and couldn't find any others.
Today we round the last turn before heading into the stretch run of the season. Today's action starts and ends with the Big12SEC Challenge on ESPN. The biggest of these games will be played tonight at 6pm EST as Kentucky travels to Phog Allen Fieldhouse in search of that marquee road win. The Jayhawks are coming in fresh off a 94-91 2OT game vs Texas Tech. Monday's game was the best game I have watched this season.
If you look at the top of the updated standings, Silvio Bohannon is leading the way times 3. Two big reason's for Silvio's success so far has been the success of his three wildcard teams and the dominance of Bruce Pearl's Auburn Tigers. I was really hoping to see an Auburn vs Baylor matchup today, but instead get a Sooners v Tigers matchup. Looking further into the Auburn schedule, you will see Tennessee is the only current Top 25 team left on the Tiger's schedule. If you are looking for a #1 seed come March, Auburn and Gonzaga are looking like locks.
The following march2madness teams have been a major disappointment this season. They have a little over a month to get things moving in the right direction.
1) Memphis Tigers(11-8) Even Little Penny isn't happy with the Tiger's performance this season. Vegas had Memphis with a win total of 30 this season, but this young team finds themselves in sixth place in the American. That includes losses to SMU, Tulane, ECU and UCF. They still have to play Houston twice. This AltCoin team is certainly bringing you down in the standings, The Tigers have won two in a row, let's see what they have next Thursday as they travel to play the Bearcats.
2) Syracuse (9-11) The Orange are the only team in all the m2m groupings with a losing record. This team is having a tough time shooting and defending, not a good combination. This was highlighted a couple weeks ago when Miami put up 58 pts in the second half.
3) Louisville (11-9) The Cardinal had loss 5 of 6 coming into today's contest with Duke. However, the big difference will be on the sidelines as Mike Pegues takes over for the departed Chris Mack.
4) Maryland (11-9) Another team with a new interim coach this season. The Terrapins were loved by the poles in the preseason, but their Big10 woes continue. Currently ninth in the standings at 3-6, they have Indiana, MIchigan St, Ohio St, Iowa, and Purdue upcoming. This could get real ugly for Danny Manning's squad.
Virginia Tech (10-10) Not that I ever bought into the preseason buzz, but I did think they would be much better than 2-7 and last place in the ACC. This is one I certainly have to apologize for including on the sheet. The Hookies have no chance of playing in March.
Today Big Blue Nation mourns the passing of their legendary and beloved coach. Joe B. Hall replaced Adolph Rupp in 1972 and coached UK for the next 13 seasons. In 1978 he led the Wildcats to a National Title. Hall also won a National Title as a player for UK in 1949 making him the only player to win titles as a player and coach for the same team. He also appeared in the National Title Game vs UCLA in 1975. The Wildcats got 34 pts from Kevin Grevy but it wasn't enough as John Wooden's dynasty took home another title, 92-85. There should be a lot of energy today with a capacity crowd at Rupp Arena. The #18 Wildcats will face off against #22 Tennessee at 1pm EST on ESPN. This game may be the best game of the weekend.
Not playing in front of capacity crowds has thrown off several Pac-12 teams. USC was upset at Stanford on Tuesday night in front of a nearly empty Maples Pavilion. On Thursday, UCLA dropped an overtime loss on it's home court without it's home crowd at an empty Pauley Pavilion. The loss to Oregon was a Quad 3 loss. The only teams in the Top 25 with a Q3 loss is UCLA and Duke.
This week we also saw another #1 go down as Baylor comes up on the short-end vs Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are now on a three game win streak with wins over Baylor, Kansas, and Oklahoma State. Looks like the Auburn could be this week's #1 if they can win at Ole Miss tonight. They held off Alabama on Tuesday, and may have a shot to leapfrog Gonzaga for that top seed. However, the Zags were back on the court this pass week combining for 227 pts in wins over Pepperdine and BYU.
As for this week's m2m update, please check back on Monday for results. The NCAA "team" stats are not available today for some reason. I am hoping they get that kink worked out by Monday.
We are now down to three undefeated teams. Baylor (14-0) is ranked #1 and USC (13-0) is #7. Colorado State (11-0) is getting little love at #20. With an undefeated record and wins over Mississippi St, St Mary's, and Creighton, the Rams should feel disrespected entering their national broadcast today on CBS at 4 pm vs San Diego State. The Rams will need a big showing from leading scorer David Roddy in order to knock of the Aztecs in this Mountain West Showdown. Today's CBS triple header gets started at noon with Wichita St vs Houston, and Texas vs Oklahoma St is the middle game at 2pm. Good to see plenty of hoops action on the networks this weekend. The only game today between two ranked teams is Tennessee vs LSU tonight on ESPN2. This contest will have some impact on the march2madness contest as our top two (Jerimiah Turner and Brian Paschen) both have the LSU Tigers as their wildcard team. Behind them are three Silvio Bohannan entries. The California native has three entries with the only difference the wildcard team. Somehow, all three wildcards (New Mexico St, South Dakota St, and Iona) have scored 10 points on the season. I have not updated the PayPal payments since last week. These payments will be posted on the next update.
Here is a list of the Top Wildcard teams to date:
Auburn (13-1) 12.5 pts
Iowa State (13-1) 12.5 pts
LSU (13-1) 12.5 pts
UAB (13-3) 11.5 pts
Wisconsin (12-2) 11 pts
Chattanooga (12-3) 10.5 pts
Louisiana Tech (12-3) 10.5 pts
St Mary's (12-3) 10.5 pts
Wake Forest (12-3) 10.5 pts
Coach K has embarked on his final run through the ACC arenas and this week's starting five looks at the coaches likely to replace the legendary Coach K as the Face of College Basketball.
Mark Few (Gonzaga): Like Duke, Gonzaga was not a basketball powerhouse prior the Coach Few's Advancing to the NCAA Tournament in all 21 of the team’s eligible seasons (2019-20 NCAA tournament was canceled due to COVID-19), he led Gonzaga to two NCAA National Championship appearances (2017 and 2021), four Elite Eight appearances (2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021), and 10 Sweet 16 appearances (2000, 2001, 2006, 2009, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021). This year he was named assistant coach for TEAM USA.
Scott Drew (Baylor): BIG12 basketball was all about Kansas for 14 seasons. The Big12 smelled blood when that streak came to an end and Baylor has taken grasp of that opportunity. With a national title last season, followed up with a (13-0) start and #1 ranking this season, Scott Drew is now in every Coach of the Year discussion.
Jay Wright (Villanova): Villanova has defeated UNC (2016) and Michigan (2018) in National Title Games, The slick dressing Wright has his Wildcats ready each season to be Big East favorites and a Top 10 program.
Coach Calipari (UK): Kentucky and Duke have went back and forth over the year's in top recruiting classes. Coach Cal has won six SEC titles and one National Championship since arriving in Lexington in 2009. Always a fun interview, but we will see how successful he is as the SEC has turned into the gauntlet the ACC was during Coach K's success.
Tom Izzo (Michigan State): Izzo squeezes into #5 over Beard, Self, and Bennett because he is a media hound. Like Coach Cal, he is never afraid to take the microphone and talk about the state of the game and hype up his Spartans.
(January 1, 2022) Wishing everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year. I have spent the morning updating the march2madness results and payments. Not much has changed since last week. Jerimiah Turner and his sheet of SEC and Pac-12 teams lead the way with 86 points. To check your results go to the Scoreboard menu. There is an arrow that should appear in the upper right hand corner to expand the spreadsheet to a full page for better viewing. You can also use the CTRL + F feature on your keyboard to search for your name. Please keep those payments coming.
There are still 20+ cancellations today, but some notable games will be played. The biggest of these games will be a battle of two undefeated Big-12 teams. Baylor (12-0) will take their #1 ranking into Ames to battle this year's biggest surprise, Iowa State (12-0). After not winning a conference game last season, they Cyclones look to prove their doubters wrong. Also at 2:00 EST Big East foes Villanova and Seton Hall clash. Villanova looked the part again with a decisive victory against Xavier in their previous contest. The Hall is coming off a loss to Providence their last time out. I would say whichever team can get to 60 points will win this contest. In non-conference action, West Virginia (11-1) plays #17 Texas (12-2). I am not sure why the Mountaineers are not ranked, but a win over the Longhorns should do it.
There are currently more than 40 teams on a COVID Pause bringing the total of teams effected by COVID protocals this season to 70. This has lead to many cancelled games, some delayed, some forfeit, some just no contest. As far as the march2madness scoring, we will go by the win/loss total from NCAA.com per the contest rules. I am hoping that these cancellations will peak this week or next and games will start getting regularly played as conference games begin. There are a couple nice match-ups still scheduled for this week. UConn will travel to the Queen City to take on Xavier at the Cintas Center at 7pm on Tuesday. With the struggles of Villanova, this contest will result in a Big East favorite. Seton Hall and Providence say don't forget about us. They will also battle in a Big East match-up on Wednesday. Wednesday also provides a couple games involving ranked SEC opponents. #19 Tennessee will take on #10 Alabama while #17 LSU will take their perfect record up against #12 Auburn. That leaves us with the most exciting game of the week, as #6 Arizona vs #5 UCLA will air 9pm EST on ESPN2 on Thursday.
I am heading to Dallas on New Year's Eve to watch Cincinnati vs Alabama in the Cotton Bowl. The next contest update will be posted on January 2nd or 3rd.
Happy New Year!
Going into the final week of 2021 there are still five undefeated teams.
Baylor (11-0): It didn't take the champs long to get reclaim #1 in the polls. Scott Drew has these new look Bears already playing at a high level and freshman Kendall Brown is a nightly highlight reel. Baylor already has blowout wins over Villanova, MIchigan State and Stanford.
Iowa State (12-0): The Cyclones are the only undefeated team that I missed on the m2m sheet. That's partly due to their 2-22 record last year. Well this year's squad has already beaten Xavier, Memphis, Creighton, and Iowa. This remarkable turnaround will get test as they start Big 12 play on New Year's Day vs Baylor.
USC (12-0): The Trojans will once again battle UCLA for the PAC-12 crown. Andy Enfield's team is currently on COVID Pause but should be back on Sunday as they now open league play against a dangerous Arizona squad.
Colorado State (10-0): The Rams are also on of the over 40 teams currently on COVID pause, but they have already soundly defeated St Mary's, Creighton, and Mississippi State. Too bad the game against Bama was cancelled. That would have been a good measuring stick for CSU heading into Mountain West play.
LSU (12-0): The Tigers have played the softest schedule of the undefeated bunch with wins against Liberty and Belmont, and an overtime win against Penn State. They may be a NCAA team but I am interested to see if they go .500 in the SEC.
It was the first time in history for Purdue to be ranked #1 on the AP Top 25. They looked like the complete package over the first month of the season. They Boilermakers had decisive wins over North Carolina, Florida State and Villanova. However, this is college basketball and like Duke the week before they were #1 and done. This is because they ran into a buzz saw by the name of Ron Harper Jr. The senior guard hit the go ahead shot with under 10 seconds, however, Purdue went down the court and retook the lead with 3.4 seconds on a Trevion Williams turnaround in the paint. The Scarlet Knight's wasted no time in getting the ball in the hands of Harper Jr. and he split a double team at half court and launched a buzzer beater from the "R" logo to stun the top ranked team in the country. Ron Harper, Jr. finished the game with 30 points and 10 rebounds. This was a much needed game for Rutgers who came into the game at 4-4 with losses against Depaul, Lafayette, and UMass.
Purdue's loss leaves us with just eight undefeated teams. Which of the following deserve the #1 spot in the Top 25 next week?
San Francisco (10-0), Arkansas (9-0), Colorado State (9-0), USC (9-0), Iowa State (9-0), Arizona (8-0), Baylor (8-0), and LSU (8-0).
The obvious answer is Baylor if the reigning champions can take care of business against Villanova on Sunday. That game will be played at 3pm on ABC.
The final online entry total was 236 and I probably have another 30 entries that came in the mail. I will try and get the spreadsheet ready to go by Friday with the first set of results. Until then, enjoy the B1G/ACC Challenge. Some games I will definitely be watching are Duke/Ohio State, Va Tech/Maryland, Louisville/Michigan St., FSU/Purdue and Michigan/UNC.
My picks for this season were Duke, Memphis, USC, Purdue, Colorado St, Arizona, UNC, and Florida. I also had my daughter pick teams with no knowledge of college basketball. Her picks were Kentucky, Alabama, Virginia Tech, Oregon, Colorado St, Texas Tech, Tennessee, and Iowa St (yes I did give her some wildcard teams to pick from). It will be interesting to see how far ahead of me she finishes.
Deal of the Day
Tonight at 10:30 from Las Vegas on ESPN it’s #5 Duke vs #1 Gonzaga. It’s Coack K vs Mark Few, it’s super freshman Chet Holgren and Paolo Banchero, it’s high scoring Drew Timme and Wendell Moore, Jr. It is the Deal of the Day as two 6-0 powerhouse battle for early favorites in the Bitcoin grouping.
Top Deals: the following teams are undefeated and available as wildcards:
Wake Forest (5-0): 1 of 2 undefeated teams remaining in the ACC. They have an easy schedule prior to league play and could rack up some points early on.
Iowa (5-0): Lead by 6’8” sophomore, Keegan Murray scoring 26.2 ppg.
Minnesota (5-0): Seems like we are always here with the Golden Gophers early on. Maybe Coach Ben Johnson can get them to continue their run in the Big 10.
Iowa State (5-0): Beat Xavier in the NIT preseason final on Wednesday. Beating Memphis in the NIT Final will be a taller task. If they hoist the trophy, make room on the Cyclone bandwagon.
Iona (6-0): Rick Pitino has the Gaels flying high, beating Alabama in the ESPN Event Invitational.
Miami, OH (5-0): Some folks are always looking to pick a MAC team. The Red Hawks are the only undefeated team with a win over Georgia Tech on the resume. They take on Cincinnati on 12/1.
Washington State (5-0): 1 of 4 undefeated Pac12 teams. They have taken advantage of a soft schedule.
Utah (5-0): One of the other undefeated Pac12 teams. Watch them this weekend vs BYU.
Chattanooga (5-0): Looking for a small school sleeper. The Mocs beat VCU already and look to be the team to beat in the Southern Conference.
San Francisco (7-0): Who has the most wins in the NCAA? That would be the San Francisco Dons. The West Coast Conference is turning out to be one of the better conferences with Gonzaga, St Mary’s, BYU, and now San Francisco.
Some other wildcards off to good starts: Colorado (5-1), Creighton (5-1), Oklahoma (5-1), Marquette (5-1), St Louis (6-1), Wisconsin (5-1) and Oklahoma State (5-1). Oklahoma State is ineligible for postseason play this season.
Tuesday, November 9, 2021: Google required a switch over to the new and improved google sites. There is definitely a learning curve for me. So without further ado I give you march2madness 2021-22, the CRYTO version. The contest is in it's 20th season and I think the categories are pretty fairly distributed this season. As usual, each entry will need to select one team from each of the seven categories and then select a wildcard team that does not appear on any list. The contest will return to it's roots and that includes selecting ONE Cinderella team after the tournament draw. This year's entry deadline will be Monday November 29, 2021.
BITCOIN (Duke, Gonzaga, Kansas, UK, Villanova, Virginia): Like Bitcoin, these schools are the most successful of the past decade. Each of these teams have won 77% or more of their games over the past ten seasons. Gonzaga, who made it to the title game last year returns 3 starters and bring some future NBA prospects. They won 88% of their games over the past decade but have yet to lift the trophy. Duke might have a 77% winning percentage but have no ACC titles and only one NCAA title in the last 10 seasons. Kansas is 80%, won 8 straight Big12 titles and has two Final Four appearances during the period. Villanova has dominated the Big East and has also taken two National Titles recently. Virginia has won the most (4) ACC titles in the last decade of play. They went 33-3 in ACC play from 2018-2019.
Altcoin (Bama, Memphis, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, UCLA): These are the other "digital coins" trying to be Bitcoin. Some will have value, others will dry up in a year or two. Which one is set to soar this season? UCLA seems like the media darling, however, the Bruins did sneak into the tournament last year as an #11 seed before making their Johnny Juzang run. Vegas really likes Memphis with a 33 win total behind incoming freshman Emoni Bates. Bama finished 16-2 to win the SEC last season but Coach Oates lost 4 starters but has a lot of talent coming in. Coach Howard lost several of his leading scorers as well, but another talented incoming class will keep the Wolverines hanging around in the Top 10 all season long. EJ Liddell is back for the Buckeyes and Chris Baird takes over the reigns for the Longhorns. I don't see Ohio State and Texas losing in the first round this time around.
Blockchain (UConn, Michigan St, Syracuse, USC, Virginia Tech, West Virginia): It should not be hard to figure out this blockchain. Hurley, Izzo, Boeheim, Enfield, Young, and Huggins have been around long enough that you should know what you are getting into.
Squid Game (Arkansas, Baylor, Florida St, Houston, Oregon, Purdue): Those of you who are not familiar with the Squid Game token, a group of investors heavily invested in the coin to drive the price up and when everyone started pouring their money in they dumped it and made bank. That is how I view this group of six. They all had major success last season, but is now the time to dump them? One of them is bound to repeat, can you spot them?
Going to the Moon (Belmont, BYU, Colorado State, SDSU, St Bonaventure, Xavier): These are the smaller plays that can take you portfolio of teams to the moon. I am sure Xavier & Big East fans are not happy with their inclusion in this group, but I felt they needed to be on the sheet and this seemed a good fit.
Pump and Dump (Arizona, UC, Indiana, Loyola-Chi, Texas Tech, Winthrop): All of these teams have dumped their coach and will hopefully pump up their fanbase, Out is Sean and Archie Miller, Baird, Moser, Brannon, and Kelsey, In with Lloyd, Woodson, Wes Miller, Prosser, Valentine, and Mark Adams. Their coaching will probably decide which side of the bubble each of the teams fall.
Mining Auburn, Louisville, Illinois, Maryland, UNC, Tennessee): These teams all went mining the transfer portal to fill their rosters. Auburn mined Walker Kessler from UNC along with 3 other transfers. Louisville reshaped with 6 transfers, Maryland with 5, Illinois with 3, and UNC with 3. Tennessee may only have 2 transfers but mined the high schools for seven new and talented freshman. This was the Volunteers highest ranked recruiting class ever.
WILDCARDS: You can select any team that is not on the above lists. Here are a few higher ranked (Top 60) teams to consider; LSU, St Johns, Seton Hall, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State (not eligible for postseason), UCF, Wichita State, SMU, St Mary's, Nevada, VCU, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Iowa, Liberty, Georgia State, UAB, Marquette, Mississippi State. You got almost three weeks to find someone, they usually will get your attention with a couple big wins in the holiday tournaments.
With 1700+ players entering the transfer portal over the summer, I am sure we will have more than a few surprise teams this season. Opening night already gave us a glimpse into how six year seniors can make a difference for the mid-majors.
You can email me at march2madness@gmail.com with any questions, suggestions or comments. I hope you enjoy!
The Buzz Saw (April 5, 2021) Gonzaga ran into a buzz saw known as the Baylor Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium on Monday night. The Zags were looking to become the first undefeated team in 45 years, but the Bear's got off to a quick start and never looked back. They were up by 15 before the second tv timeout, stretched the lead to 19 points and never let Gonzaga within nine points the rest of the way. Tournament MOP Jared Butler led the Bears in scoring with 22 points, MaCio Teague added 19, Mark Vital had 11 rebounds, and Davion "Off Night" Mitchell got it started with a charge against Suggs and 7 points before the 16:00 timeout. The athleticism and strength of Baylor was just too much for Gonzaga on this night. The Bears head back to Waco with a 86-70 championship. They join Texas Western as the only two Texas teams to win the NCAA title.
The march2madness title was already decided before the ball was tipped. Jeff Diebold from Edgewood, KY and big UK fan took first place ($3045). Jeff has been playing march2madness for 8 years and scored a total of 360 out of a possible 420 points. He had four of the eight highest scoring teams from the pandemic categories. The perfect sheet would have been Baylor (78pts), Creighton (34pts), UCLA (85 pts), Michigan (37pts), Arkansas (41pts), Oregon (42pts), Houston (51pts), and Loyola-Chicago (51pts). The most impressive here was UCLA and their 85.5 points. Our winner selected UCLA from the beginning over Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke, and Ohio State and so did our next two. Tim Roberts has now finished in the money three times since 2017 but second place ($609) will be his biggest payout. Tim is a Cincinnati Bearcat fan and maybe he could use this money to help buy out Coach Brannen's contract. Third place ($203) will go to Tim Lang who was hanging out towards the top all season. Tim is an avid golfer and Michigan fan who lives in Cincinnati. Fourth place ($132) goes to Sara Korsnak and fifth place ($81) to Larry Brock. Sara and Larry moved up into the money tonight as the highest Baylor entries. Mark Thiem may have landed 227 points back but he will get a free entry into next season march2madness contest as the lowest scoring paid entry. I will be double checking my math and invite each of you to do the same. The results will become OFFICIAL on Thursday at noon. I will be contacting the winners by email.
I want to thank each of you for hanging with the contest in this uncertain year, especially after the abrupt end to last season's contest. I hope next season we can get back to growing march2madness. Please check back a couple weeks before Thanksgiving for the 19th edition of march2madness.
The march2madness contest is for fun only. 100% payout to the winners. No profit is taken by administrator.
