Dr Fenichel's book is comprehensive, practical and easily readable. It is particularly useful in that the 18 chapters are organized in terms of the common signs and symptoms encountered in pediatric neurology, giving the reader direction in evaluation and management. Each chapter is divided into subheadings with brief discussions of the disorder, listing its clinical features, diagnosis and management. A fairly extensive list of references is provided at the end of each chapter. The numerous color-coded algorithms, diagrams and tables lend for easy perusal in a busy practice or during teaching rounds. Should one however desire a more in-depth discussion of therapy, one would have to refer to heavier texts such as Kenneth Swaiman's two-volume text, Pediatric Neurology: Principles and Practice. There are also illustrative neuroimaging studies in some chapters, but then again, if one would like to see more examples, one may perhaps choose to reference Barkovich's text on Pediatric Neuroimaging. The addition of more pathological studies would have made this resource more complete.

I would suggest this book as the basic text for pediatric residents training in Child Neurology and even for beginners in Child Neurology fellowship. The prose is concise, lucid and easily understood, making it less intimidating than the field it discusses. One of the strongest suits of the book, which is invaluable, is that it is heavily laced with the author's practical advice accumulated over decades of experience in the practice of Child Neurology. Neurology residents will rotate on the Pediatric Neurology for a total of 3 months, which will be incorporated in their first and second years of Neurology training (PGY-2 and PGY-3). The rotation encompasses both inpatient and outpatient care, as well as a consulting service. Since the clinical rotation will not provide practical experience in all pediatric neurological diseases, it is expected that the resident will supplement their experience with reading. Interested Adult Neurology residents may also elect to spend extra time on Pediatric Neurology, with additional inpatient and/or outpatient exposure.

The Pediatric Neurology consult team consists of an attending pediatric neurologist, the adult Neurology resident rotating on the Pediatric Neurology service, sometimes a child neurology resident (PGY-4 or PGY- 5) and one or more medical students. The team may also include a Pediatric resident electing to obtain formal training in Pediatric Neurology. An advanced practicing provider (APP) is also assigned to support the inpatient pediatric neurology team.

When rotating in the outpatient clinic, neurology residents will be assigned to specific clinics throughout the week; a schedule will be provided at the beginning of the week. The resident will work with an attending pediatric neurologist, seeing new patients and follow ups, and documenting on those encounters.

As with all of the neurology rotations, the specific objectives are reflected in the entrustable professional activities and individual milestones listed below. Research is very active within our division with multiple NIH-funded scientists whose activities span basic, translational, and clinical research. There are also many clinical trials underway in Vanderbilt ranging from new drugs for pediatric epilepsy as well as treatments for neuromuscular disorders and neurogenetic conditions.

Finally, we have a very strong emphasis on training/education with a categorical Child Neurology Residency program that currently accepts four residents per year. After residency, there are ACGME-approved fellowship programs in Clinical Neurophysiology, Epilepsy, Neuromuscular, and Sleep. We also sponsor non-ACGME-approved training in pediatric Movement Disorders, Demyelinating/White Matter Disorders, and Stroke. Medical students from Vanderbilt University and outside institutions are an integral part of our program.
