Testimonials
I had the opportunity to get dinner at Mellow Mushroom with two third-year math majors. Over pizza, we discussed their experiences and career goals. One of the students was in the engineering school and was intending to eventually pursue a PhD in applied math. The other student was a double major in psychology and was considering obtaining a masters in mathematics, en route to a career in actuarial science. To support both of these students in their aspirations for applying to graduate programs in mathematics, I shared my own experiences. Topics included planning out prerequisite coursework, independent studies, application essays, and resources for finding information on existing graduate programs. I sincerely enjoyed our conversation and hearing about these students' passion for mathematics!
--Sam Goldberg ('24), speaking as a mentor in the MAPS@UVa program
The MAPS program offers an excellent opportunity to sit down with fellow math majors and discuss a wide range of topics in a conversational manner. In my group, we talked about math competitions, programs offered at UVa for advanced study in mathematics, and preparation for internships and industry. My mentor and I shared a common interest in financial mathematics, so I had a great time asking about his experience applying for internships in the finance industry, and discussing his research in stochastic differential equations for his distinguished major thesis. I found this experience to be highly informative and would definitely recommend it to anyone! MAPS seeks to accommodate all types of students, so whether you are new to math and unsure where your interest lie or if you already have a direction, this program is for you.

My mentor and I talked about many things, including classes I should think about taking, areas of math we're interested in, ways of getting involved in the math department (both formally and informally), as well as advice for math research. It was a really great experience, both because I got some great advice as well as giving me the opportunity to meet more of my fellow math majors.
