Mapoly ("the app") is a location-based audio guide that identifies nearby landmarks and generates spoken descriptions as you walk. This policy explains what data the app accesses and how it's used. Mapoly is developed by Makers of Wonder.
Mapoly uses your device's location, only while the app is open, to find points of interest near you. Your location (or the area you move the map to) is sent to Mapoly's own backend server to search for nearby places. Location data is used only to provide this core functionality. It is not stored with your app ID, not kept as a history of where you've been, not sold, not shared with advertisers, and not used for tracking.
The first time you open Mapoly, the app creates a random ID and keeps it on your device. It is not connected to your name, email address or phone number. We use it to keep track of your daily credits, remember the places you save, keep the places you suggest, count which places are opened (so we know which places are popular), and link your purchases to your app. You can see your app ID at the bottom of the About section in Mapoly's Settings.
If you suggest a new place (its name, category, optional description and location), it is stored with your app ID. Suggestions are reviewed by us before they are shown to anyone, and are never shown publicly without our approval.
Subscriptions and credit packs are paid through Apple. We never see your payment card details. We use RevenueCat, a purchase management service, to confirm your purchases and link them to your anonymous app ID. RevenueCat's privacy policy: https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy
To generate content, Mapoly's backend sends the following to third-party services on your behalf:
Wikipedia / Wikimedia: Wikipedia / Wikimedia (including Wikidata): the coordinates of the area being searched, plus place names and article titles, to fetch public encyclopedia content. No personal data is sent.
Groq (AI narration provider): place names and Wikipedia article text, to generate spoken narration text. No personal or location data is sent to this service, only place names and public article content.
OpenStreetMap services (Geofabrik Postpass and Nominatim): the coordinates of the area being searched, to find nearby places and which country the area is in (used to pick the right language). No personal data is sent.
Google Cloud Text-to-Speech (AI voices): only the narration text, to turn it into audio. No personal or location data is sent.
These services operate under their own privacy policies. Our backend and database are hosted by Render and Supabase, who store data on our behalf.
Data We Store
Mapoly's backend stores information about places (names, descriptions, coordinates) and the guides and audio generated for them, so we don't repeatedly query external services. This is not personal data about you. We also store the small amount of data linked to your anonymous app ID described above: credits, saved places, suggested places, places opened, and purchase status. Your settings (language, tone, voice, playback speed, etc.) are stored only on your device.
Data We Do Not Collect
Mapoly does not collect your name, email address, contacts, photos, microphone audio or precise ongoing location history. Mapoly does not currently show ads, and we do not use advertising trackers or analytics tools that follow you across apps or websites.
How Long We Keep Data
Data linked to your app ID is kept while you use the app. If you ask us to delete it, we will do so within 30 days. Information about places, and the guides and audio generated for them, is not about you and may be kept to serve other users.
Your Rights
You can ask us to access or delete the data linked to your app ID by emailing makersofwonder@gmail.com. Please include your app ID (Settings → About section, long-press to copy). If you are in the EU/UK, you also have the right to correct, restrict or object to the processing of your data, and to complain to your local data protection authority. We process this data to provide the app's service to you.
Children
Mapoly is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

Changes to This Policy
This policy may be updated as the app develops. When it changes, we will update the date at the top, and for important changes we will let you know in the app. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
