Norwegian Sunset maple (Acer truncatum x A. platanoides 'Keithsform') is a deciduous tree that is commonly used as a shade tree and as an ornamental tree in landscapes. It is a hybrid between the Shantung maple and the Norway maple, and can grow up to 30 to 35 feet (9 to 10.5 meters) tall and 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7.5 meters) wide.
The tree has a broadly oval habit with a rounded canopy, and produces small, yellow flowers in early spring that are followed by winged fruit in summer. Its foliage is a glossy green color throughout the growing season, turning a stunning blend of orange, red, and purple in the fall. The Norwegian Sunset maple has a smooth gray bark when young, which eventually develops some furrows and fissures as the tree matures.
Norwegian Sunset maple is known for its beautiful fall color and its adaptability to a range of soil types and environmental conditions. It is also relatively tolerant of drought and urban pollution, and resistant to pests and diseases.
