IR Boundary Control System

For the summer design intensive of 2020 we had to pick either an already establish project to work on and improve or come up with a new project idea. After cutting the lawn at my house in blistering heat time and time again I looked into automated lawnmowers and found a rather annoying problem. In order to get an automated lawn mower you need to bury a wire deep into the ground around your yard to establish a perimeter that the mower won't cross.

I thought this was a rather tedious requirement and thought there must be a better solution to this. Thus, I came up with the idea of using IR transmitters and receivers in order to avoid burying the wire will still having an effective perimeter.

Carbon Fiber Electric Longboard

The electric longboard was designed with the idea of being drive shaft driven and created out of composite materials. It utilizes a battery assembled from 20 18650 cells, an outrigger style brushless DC motor, and a handheld speed controller. All of these components are protected by a custom carbon fiber enclosure. A custom axle housing, bracket and drivetrain were needed to achieve our reliability and durability requirements.
