Curriculum vitae | George I. Mantanis was born in Mytelene, Lesbos, in 1966. He grew up in Stipsi, Lesbos island (Greece), and graduated with honours from Kalloni High School in 1984. He presently is a senior faculty member at Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences and Design, at University of Thessaly, Laboratory of Wood Science and Technology. During the years 2002-2019, he served in the former Department of Wood & Furniture Design and Technology at TEI of Thessaly. Along with Prof. Em. Ioannis Kakaras, he academically coordinated and organised the new department, and also served as chair for six academic years (2002-2006, 2012-2014).


Dr. Mantanis holds a diploma degree in Forestry from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1989), with specialisation in wood technology. He acquired his doctorate degree (PhD) from the University of Wisconsin - Madison (USA) in wood science (1994), under the supervision of Prof. Raymond A. Young and Prof. Roger M. Rowell. He worked in Forest Products Laboratory at Madison, Wisconsin, and also employed for two years in Forest Research Institute of Thessaloniki (1996-1997), and also, as a research scientist for four years in the industrial wood company, ACM Wood Chemicals Plc (1998-2001) in Thessaloniki, today kwown as Chimar Hellas S.A. He possesses expertise in scientific and technological areas of wood and wood based panels, and also holds two international patents (WO 02/102926, WO 00/74909). He has participated in many research projects and has published, along with his collaborators, more than 60 papers in referred international journals. 


Since 2018, he has been partaking in two PhD advisory committees, in research wood-science projects, which are carried out at LTU, Sweden. In addition, Dr. George Mantanis is a Co-Editor in referred journal Wood Material Science and Engineering (I.F. 2.200), Taylor & Francis. He is a reviewer in several international journals, such as, European Journal of Wood and Wood Products, Wood Science and Technology, Wood Material Science & Engineering, Wood Research, Holzforschung, Maderas. Ciencia y tecnologia, BioResources, Wood and Fiber Science, Drvna Industrija, Forests, and International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation. Also, in Greece, he is a member of the advisory committee at engineering-related periodical KTIRIO, and frequently columns in wood-related magazines, eWood, ΕΠΙΠΛεΟΝ, GreekArchitects.gr. His research work does have international impact (Google Scholar cit.: 2.820, h-index: 27 - Scopus cit.: 1.844, h-index: 21). Ιn 2021, he was elected a Fellow in the International Academy of Wood Science. In Oct. 2023, his name was included in Elsevier Data (career data) for the highest 2% of the most recognised wood scientists in the area of Forestry (Materials).
