Brexit & Devolution

  • The IPP are a party supportive of EU membership, but we realise that Northern Ireland voted to leave, and with the backstop arrangement organised by HM Government, we plan to aid them in the transition process. In turn, we will lobby HM Government to communicate openly and frequently with Northern Irish MPs and MLAs on the progression of Brexit negotiations.
  • The IPP will contribute fully to the Royal Commission on Devolution, unlike other nationalist parties who seek to derail it, and await its findings with glee. In the meantime, we will lobby for extension of devolved powers in line with the recommendations of earlier commissions.
  • An Irish Parliamentarian MP will look to ensure the franchise is not removed from 16 and 17-year olds in Northern Ireland.
  • We believe that the actions of Sinn Fein during GreenLeft merger talks were not befitting of any Assembly member, let alone one in the Executive. In order to ensure that these actions cause no instability to the peace process, we will legislate for a Stormont inquiry on the merger, to be chaired by an independent legal adjudicator in the Supreme Court.
