Gongs
The Gong is a musical instrument made of bronze alloy, sometimes mixed with gold, silver, or black bronze. Typically, the Cồng ( gongs) has a knob, while the Chiêng (flat gongs) does not, although the naming convention "Gong" may vary among different ethnic groups. This musical instrument comes in various sizes, ranging from 20 to 60cm in diameter, with larger ones reaching diameters of 90 to 120cm. The Gong can be struck with mallets or by hand.
For many ethnic groups, the Gong holds significant meaning and high value, closely following the community and each member within it. Major events in life are inseparable from the resonating tones of the Gong.
The Gong Cultural Space in the Central Highlands was recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on November 25, 2005.
Here, we would like to introduce two distinctive Gong-Chime cultures in Vietnam: The gong of the Mường ethnic group and The space of gong culture in the Vietnam Highlands.
