Dr. Manabu Fukushima

National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan

Dr. Fukushima is a group leader in National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Nagoya, Japan. He has published more than 105 papers in peer-reviewed journals, 6 book chapters, edited or co-edited 10 books and holds 34 patents. One of the most significant research accomplishments of Dr. Fukushima is the development of advanced manufacturing technology to fabricate ultra-highly porous ceramics with precisely controlled porous structures. The visibility of Dr. Fukushima’s work was emphasized by mass media including several newspapers, which reported the new type of porous ceramics he developed could be used for various applications. Dr. Fukushima has made outstanding contributions to international ceramic communities. He served American Ceramic Society (ACerS) Engineering Ceramic Division (ECD) as Chair in 2018–2019 and Parliamentarian currently. He was a Program Chair in 42nd International Conference and Expo on Advanced Ceramics and Composites (ICACC) in 2018. He has very frequently lead-organized many symposia in above 30 international conferences. Dr. Fukushima’s outstanding research accomplishments and professional services in international ceramic communities worldwide is recognized by the numerous prestigious awards, including: Fellow (2023), Richard M. Fulrath Award (2019) and Global Ambassador Award (2017) from ACerS, First Prize of ICACC Best Paper Award (2011) and Global Star Award (2014) from ACerS ECD, 66th Award for Advancements in Ceramic Science and Technology (2011), Distinguished Poster Award (2014), Prof. Takayoshi Iseki Award (2015) and Presentation Award (2015) all from the Ceramic Society of Japan, Lee Hsun Young Scientist Lecture Series (2017) on Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials science, Award of Distinguished Achievements in Research from Japan Society of Powder and Powder Metallurgy, Shri J. S. Minhas Memorial Award from Indian Ceramic Society, Western U. P. (Khuirja) Chapter, 53rd Ichimura Prize in science against global warming for distinguished achievement from the Ichimura Foundation for New Technology in 2021. Furthermore, very recently Dr. Fukushima and his group successfully demonstrated data-driven strategies to create artificial intelligence model with human-like image discrimination for the first time (J. Am. Ceram. Soc., 2023).
