#156 スモールではないスモールトーク
学生と一緒に、Justine Coupland の論文 “Social Functions of Small Talk and Gossip” を読みました。
この授業では、論文を読む前に毎回スモールトークの時間をとってきたので、最終回にこの論文を扱えたのは、これまで自分たちがやってきたスモールトークの意義をあらためて考えるうえで、とてもよい締めくくりだったように思います。
論文の中では、Michael Halliday（1985）が示した、言語が同時に果たす三つの機能、内容や経験を表す観念構成的機能（ideational function）、メッセージの構成や流れに関わるテクスト構成的機能（textual function）、そして社会的関係を指し示す対人的機能（interpersonal function）、が紹介されています。そのうえで、スモールトークにおいて特に中心となるのは、この最後の「対人的機能」であることが指摘されています。
"...in the widely cited case of making a comment on the weather to an acquaintance at the train station (for example, lovely day today or what rain!) it is not that there is no ideational meaning in the message. Rather for the purpose of the exchange, in that context and at that moment, the focus on interpersonal goals is paramount."
今朝、大学の警備員さんと、まさに「寒いですね」というやりとりをしました。それ自体に何か具体的な情報を伝えたいわけではないのですが、言葉を交わすことでお互いを気にかけていることが伝わり、少し場が和む。時間があるときには、そこから立ち話が長くなることもあります。
こうして考えてみると、「寒いですね」という一言はとてもスモールだけれど、コミュニケーションにとっては決して スモールではない。そんなことを、あらためて実感しました。
