#94 人々とともに研究する
以前取り上げた citizen linguistics について、改めて調べてみました。どうやらこの概念は、もともと自然科学分野で使われていた citizen science の枠組みが、（社会）言語学に応用されて用いられているようです。
Citizen science 自体にも定義の揺らぎはありますが、すべての定義に共通しているのは「専門家ではない人々が科学的知識の生産に参加すること」という点です（Svendsen & Goodchild, 2023）。著者たちは次のように述べています。
“There is, as we will return to below, no clear-cut understanding of citizen science (henceforth, CS), but the various definitions all imply different levels of ‘participation of non-professional contributors in the production of scientific knowledge’ (Kasperowski et al., 2021, p.14).”
さらに、こうした研究の在り方は、近年のオープンサイエンスへの転換や、研究の民主化・市民参加の拡大という流れとも一致しているとされます。
“Citizen linguistics is consistent with the shift towards open science, as well as recent calls for increased public engagement and democratization of research.”
ここでいう citizen は、国家や法的地位とは関係なく、「世界中のあらゆる人々」を指す普遍的な意味で使われています。
社会言語学の分野でも、変異研究などを中心に、これまでも「非専門家の協力者」によるデータ提供や参与は見られてきました。しかし近年では、それを一歩進めて、一般の人々が（共同）研究者として、研究のプロセスそのものにより積極的に関わるようになってきたと指摘されています。
“In recent years, (socio)linguistics have advocated a stronger involvement of people in the research process, arguing that engaging people as (co)researchers—in research by and with people instead of about them—will open new avenues for (socio)linguistic knowledge, methodology, and impact, such as democratisation of research, increased scientific literacy, and social change.”
つまり、人々が自らの言語実践を意識し、それを通して研究に貢献すること自体は、フォーク・リンギスティクスや言語民族誌学、言語人類学などでも見られてきましたが、最近の citizen sociolinguistics では、一般の人々が研究のあらゆる段階で研究者として関わる可能性（affordance）に重点が置かれている点が新しいと述べられています。
“This recent turn differs in its emphasis on the affordances—as well as the challenges—of engaging lay people as language researchers in some or all stages of the research process.”
