Ledge View Nature Center is a 105-acre Calumet County park and environmental education center located just south of Chilton, WI. The park is best known for its caves, but also contains woodland, dolomite ledges, open prairie and an inactive quarry. Hikers can enjoy 3 miles of trails, a 60-foot observation tower, an arboretum, and gardens with native wildflowers. Visitors can also view displays and interactive exhibits inside the nature center building.

EDIT: People are suggesting lipslides worked for them and others suggesting that boardsliding the raised middle part of the ledge worked. Lipslides didn't work for me but hitting the raised middle part of the ledge worked.

From the parking lot, walk a short distance around the north end of Rattlesnake Lake to the trailhead on the northwest side of the lake. There you will find porta-potties and a very informative kiosk with maps, trail information and history of the area. To the right is the well signed trailhead. Begin hiking here.

After about a hundred feet you will be met by a "greeter" boulder, the first of many of these mossy monsters you will encounter along the lower section of the trail. As you ascend the trail and gain elevation, there will be a few places where you can look down on Rattlesnake Lake and appreciate your progress. At 1.9 miles you will reach a signed junction; though it is not signed, Rattlesnake Ledge is just to the right, about a hundred yards away.

The ledge is a very exposed, large rock that has sheer cliffs, so it would be wise approach slowly if you are hiking with kids or dogs.

If you wish to extend your trip you can go back to the junction where the sign points out the trail to East Peak 2.4 miles away, or the ridge traverse to Snoqualmie Park, 8.3 miles away. You can also go just a short way from the junction up to Middle Ledge and Upper Ledge which are usually much quieter and afford more sweeping views to the northwest, where you can look down on the crowds at Rattlesnake Ledge.

WTA Pro Tip: Good places to stop for an after-hike social to relax and talk about your just completed hike or other adventures include the North Bend Bar & Grill in North Bend and Stan's Barbecue in Issaquah.

A mile-long auto road leads to the top of 700-foot Cathedral Ledge where views across the Saco River Valley to the White Mountains can be enjoyed. The park can be also be accessed from hiking trails at Echo Lake State Park. Once on the top, a new accessible hiking trail leads to a view of the valley. Both Cathedral and nearby White Horse ledges are popular rock and ice climbing walls.

This hike is called Giant Ledge, but there are actually five distinct ledges where you can walk out and have the whole world (or at least a really large, Catskilly slice of the world) open up before you.

9. Just past that campsite marker, keep an eye out on your right for the first ledge. Hell-ooo! What a view. If you can find a spot here to relax and soak in the view, you might very well want to make this your final destination.

Thanks for the tip! Did this hike yesterday, it was always on my to do list but the crowds have kept me away for a few years. It was well worth it, spectacular views from the ledges. I was glad I went up to Panther, even though the view there plays second fiddle to the ledges, just a bit too many trees for that classic wide open view. However, the trail to Panther was wonderful! Love that evergreen feel, and so many huge rocks with low hanging fern draping over the side. Great stuff.

Thank you so much for this write up. I just did this hike with my friend yesterday (We are Panther People! lol) and agree we found that final scramble up Panther more than a little challenging (and also the climb back up to the ledges on the way down) but that final view from the top of the world really did make it worth it. My favorite views that day were from the top of the large rock near the Panther summit and that final small ledge. It seems someone has taken the Panther Mountain summit marker so we were unsure we actually hit it until we came down and checked our maps and trail guides. Thanks for the awesome write up and confirmation that Panther people are actually the coolest. We thought so, but you helped us be sure!

When it was time, we all drove to Cathedral ledge where Alan was awaiting our arrival. He let us through the gates and we drove all the way up. We then walked to the most perfect ceremony location overlooking the mountainous views. When we were all set up, it was time for Lauren to walk through the woods. It was so adorable watching Corey see her for the first time.

Getting married at Cathedral ledge is a perfect place to have an intimate ceremony and celebrate afterwards. Whether you are eloping with just the two of you, or even with your closest family and friends, there is plenty of space on the mountain. It has grand views, has an adventurous vibe, but still simple to drive up for those who can't hike.

Ledge Park (83 acres) lies along the Niagara Escarpment, a natural rock ledge which divides the park into upper and lower areas and provides a breathtaking overlook of the famous Horicon Marsh and surrounding countryside. The upper area is heavily wooded and offers picnicking areas, a shelter, hiking trails, 41 campsites, a restroom/shower facility, a dump station and the Fort Ledge Playground. The lower area also offers a shelter, picnic areas, hiking trails, a wildlife pond and play equipment. Hiking trails wind along the ledge, between interesting and unique rock formations and through heavily wooded areas. Ledge Park is located in the north central part of Dodge County, between Horicon and Mayville, just off of Hwy TW. Ledge Park is a convenient place to stay while exploring the Horicon Marsh, the Horicon Marsh International Education Center, the Wild Goose State Trail and Gold Star Memorial Trail and many other attractions in Dodge County.

And then a cry came from the rigging. Diego, swung up in the web of mainsail rope, yelled a shapeless sound and pointed frantically off the side of the ship. At port, two iridescent coils, the height of three men, arched across our length. They moved as fast as a lash and seemed pure muscle, strong enough to splinter the Elena to matchwood. Their scales shimmered like cathedral glass, slick and brilliant. I froze with the ledger open on my lap. Before long, other sea serpents, large as the first, foamed the water in a frenzy. The ocean was a tipped basket of eels. The serpents coiled and, at once, lunged beneath the boat.

The Elena drifted at the ledge. We continued with the watches, four hours to a shift, all heads listening for the catch of canvas. But no breeze filled the sails, and a small, inexorable current pushed us toward the drop.

The men eyed one another skeptically. Our captain had admitted that our great expedition was folly. The countries we knew were the only countries. But what unimaginable vale awaited us over the ledge? What did it feel like to fall forever?

His eyes were gentle. To my amazement, he took the ledger from my hand and lettered slowly. I had never seen him use a quill. For the first time, I heard his voice on the page and, in shock, my tears stopped.

In an instant, the line unwound ferociously and the longboat vanished over the ledge. We never heard their cries. The crew jumped on the rope and found themselves nearly propelled over the side. I grabbed the final length of line and knotted it around the base of the main-mast. When it uncoiled completely, the rope, three-fingers thick, sprang taut. The mast howled under a massive weight. The crew crushed forward to regain a purchase, but could not pull the line back. We were strung tight; the fathom-line ran from the Elena, through the air and over the ledge.

When the final figure boarded the Elena, holding her head down in humility, I knew that I had called her. Those who crossed the ledge did so because we summoned them with yearning. Her shirt was soaked, a damp rag giving no warmth, though none was needed. When she looked up, I understood why the crew had mutinied: Death is the tyranny. To conquer the ledge was a conquest over this. The greed of time.

They pull over a strange ship, this one low and open and driven by oars, with a high wooden dragon head fixed at its prow. The two ships repeat this, and before long, the sea here becomes busy with boats, many unknown to me, and far outnumbering the Elena. The water carries the noise of weird cries and tongues. This motley army of the dispossessed, recovered from the ledge, soon fills the ocean as far as I see. At evening, we depart east together, sails bellied in the new wind.

Migrant Indian tribes led by the famous Chief Okemos called this area "Big Rocks". They came here in early spring to tap the sugar maples. Later, the beauty of the ledges and woods attracted the Grand Ledge Spiritualist Camp Association, which, in 1894, established a summer campground and erected the large pavilion (big red barn), which still stands.
