I am Associate Professor of Latin American Politics at the Institute of the Americas at University College London (UCL). Currently, I also serve as Deputy Head of Department for the Institute of the Americas and Vice-Dean for Advancement & Alumni for the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences.
I've previously been a Visiting Fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at the University of Notre Dame, a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, and a post-doctoral researcher (Oberassistentin) at the Department of Political Science of the University of Zurich.
My work explores questions about political behaviour, representation, policy-making, and gender and politics with a regional focus on Latin America, especially Brazil. My research has been published in Comparative Political Studies, the British Journal of Political Science, Party Politics, Democratization, and Politics & Gender, among others. My book, Resistance to Gender Quotas in Latin America (Oxford University Press), is available open access.
I value public engagement and have provided analysis on Brazilian politics and women’s political representation for The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Washington Post, the BBC, El País, and other media outlets.
I was born and raised in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. I completed my doctoral studies at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford (DPhil, 2016). I also hold an MSc in Politics Research (2012) from Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford, and a BA (2011) from Barnard College, Columbia University.
