Sounds

abc's - short vowels, (a=apple, b=boy,etc)

long vowels (a, e, i ,o, u) Example: a -e = "a" because the Magic "e" makes "a" says it own name. Like in made.

wh - whistle sh- ship ch - chair th - thumb (2nd sound then)

Special sounds/letters and their rules:

qu - queen - no English word ends with "q", "q" is always followed by "u" because they are best friends

v - van - no English word ends in "v" it always followed by an "e" at the end, like have

j - jam - no English word ends in "j"

c - cat - /k/ sound, c will say /s/ when followed by "e", "i", our "y." Like Center City had a Cyclone.

g - goat - "g' will say /j/ when followed by "e", "i", our "y." Gentle Ginger went to the Gym.

k - kite - /k/, will say /k/ before "e", "i", our "y."

ck - /k/ - duck Use ck at the end of one syllable words with a short vowel sound. (We say short word, short sound)

tch - /ch/ - The "t" is silent. Use "tch" at the end of one syllable words with a short vowel sound. (We say short word, short sound)

dge - /ge/ - the "d" is silent. Use "dge" at the end of one syllable words with a short vowel sound. (We say short word, short sound)

New sounds this month. Students are working on these, have not mastered them!

ed - past tense - ed says /ed/ after base words ending in "d" and "t". Like in landed

ed - says /d/ after the final letter of the base word is voiced. Like in sailed

ed - says /t/ if the final letter in not voiced. Like in jumped
