Danilo Bekovi was born in Podgorica in 1981. He has a degree in Film and TV Directing as well as in General Literature and Literary Theory from the University of Belgrade. He directed short fiction films: Wolf (2004), Age of Innocence (2007) and MontePuttana (2008) as well as a short documentary, Slam. His documentary, Crnjanski, about the life of a famous Serb writer, is currently in post-production. Mali Budo (Little Budo) is his first feature film. Mr. Bekovi is not married.
This ambitious film is a big mashup of Blade Runner, Asimov, Minority Report, Frankenstein, and Snow Crash within a Czech sci-fi thriller. Leans too heavily on the world building without enough in the storytelling to make the payoff worth it. So many distinct, intriguing ideas about this future and its moral quandaries are brought up, but never fully explored. The potential feels much greater than the actual experience we get. Good, not great overall, though still interesting. It's technically impressive filmmaking, I honestly must praise how good it looks visually. There's so many smart ideas in this but it doesn't all come together the way it should in the end. Still a worthwhile made-outside-of-Hollywood sci-fi movie to discover and enjoy, at least once.
This definitely wears it's Blade Runner cyberpunk noir influences on it's sleeve. It does however being its own ideas and images to the table. My rating of this gradually rose as the film progressed. I was particularly interested in the juxtaposition of the dystopian solar farm next to the more classical smoky flary fossil fuel refinery. The whole death cheat was also done pretty well and led to some good twists. Finally, it's definitely cool to see the lead role in a noir go to a woman for once.
I will say, I might be a little biased because the last good 'full-on*' sci-fi from my country was released in 1963 with Ikarie-XB1. It's not everyday that we see a film like this, so there might be a slight uphand that I'm giving to Restore Point. But goddamn this was a treat.
U srpskom filmu o savremenim Crnogorcima koje su tamo udomili, nema pozitivnog lika niti karaktera. Nema uzora za ugled, ni meu Srbima!? OK. Crnogorci u Beogradu su nita roba, ne valjaju boba. Provjereno, dokazano. itava plejada, ratnih hukaa i poratnih pomagaa je smaknuta, jer im se nije moglo stati na kraj i to se nee poklapa sa turobnim srpskim iskustvom s njima. Ali, onda je valjalo nai Srbina, valjda ga imaju u optoj nestaici, makar za lijek, da ih prekultivie.
Director Danilo Bekovi's film "Little Budo", which tells the story of the son of a surgeon from Podgorica who flees blood feud and comes to Belgrade, can be expected in cinemas in the fall. Bekovi together with Dimitri Vojnov ("Montevideo, see you", "Haircut", "The Age of Innocence"...) signed the script, and the main roles are played by Petar Strugar, Sergej Trifunovi, Tihomir Stani and Petar Boovi.
Preparations for the filming of the film began in the summer of 2012, and the filming was completed a year later. Bekovi says that a good atmosphere on the set was of great importance and that it contributed a lot to the actors and author's team doing their best.
The working version of the film was shown at Kustendorf and received a standing ovation. Vojnov admits that the authors were worried about whether the film would be able to connect with the audience, but it turned out that it passed the "test drive" with the highest marks. That is why the screenwriter expects a serious cinematic life of the film.
"This year will be marked by the domestic film's attempt to once again become a pillar of the regional cinema offer. 'Montevideo' achieved enormous success, a lot is expected from Dragojevi's new film, and I think that 'Mali Budo' is a film that will mark the autumn in our cinemas. That assessment shared by our distributors and co-producers, but also by the public who have watched it so far"
"Mali Budo" is based on Montenegrin humor and Bekovic expects the audience in Montenegro to love it, although he is not sure that anyone will dare to find themselves in it. "I think the audience from Podgorica will love this film. They will enjoy it. Podgorica's humor is very specific and I like it, and I think it is much less affirmed than Sarajevo's, for example. I can't wait for the reactions," added Vojnov.
Some replicas from the films of Yugoslav cinema managed to outlive the country itself. In terms of genre, quotes from comedies showed the greatest vitality, which is why their relative absence from the cinema repertoire is surprising. More precisely, the comic elements are still there, but they usually serve as a means of diluting the concentrate of fatalism in the dramatic work. Fortunately, there are still authors who are not afraid to make a film that will primarily be a comedy, and will also have a sufficiently developed story, due to which the end result will not resemble a series of random sketches.
"Little Budo" is the directorial debut of Danilo Bekovi, who also wrote the screenplay together with Dimitri Vojnov. If we take into account that Vojnov is undeniably the most important Serbian screenwriter of the younger generation and a great connoisseur of genre films, the clear repertory determination of the work is not surprising. As an action comedy based on the relationship between Bud and the corrupt inspector Mi (Sergej Trifunovi), the work can easily compete with works of a similar type, and even surpass most of them in terms of quality. On the other hand, if the intention was to analyze the Montenegrin mentality in a pleasing way, there is already more room for objections.
Podgorica, from which Budo is leaving, is not Podgorica today, but the one from a few decades ago, and the question is which Belgrade Budo is coming to. The film is not based on the conflict between Montenegrin and Serbian, because there is almost no Serbian in the film. All the main and secondary characters are Montenegrins, except for a couple of Mi's mistresses, whom he uses for blackmail. Because of this, it sometimes seems that Budo traveled more through time and less through space.
The work is characterized by a clear dramatic structure in which each scene is related to the main plot, which is certainly refreshing. The authors rarely reach for unoriginal jokes that could be reduced to jokes inserted into the film (note about devices), and more often they do what is more difficult, but also more fun, that is, they use the full potential of the situation in order to achieve a comic effect (Bud's hilarious passing of the hammer to Misha ). Budo is an exceptional character not because he is Montenegrin or from Podgorica, but because he is Budo. Not overly intelligent, but certainly overbearing and rich enough to cover it up, he positions himself as a likeable archetype of the quintessentially humane daddy's boy who demonstrates his value system in the drug trip scene. Again, Bud's trip involving girls, a pool and a party does not necessarily indicate a national, but a generally present consumer worldview.
In certain scenes (Budo's father attacks his girlfriend, Budo declares that his mother slept with everyone) believability is pushed to the background. The good thing is that it didn't push the whole thing in the direction of parody, but rather evokes an association with similar exaggerations in the works of contemporary American cinema. In addition, blood revenge or Goli otok seem relatively archaic in a film of this type, which cannot be said for the mailmen of the main characters. Thanks to the excellent cast, led by Peter Strugar, the way lines are delivered is often as witty as what is said. Because of this, the film occasionally reaches the authenticity of the legendary "Loma" from Zagori, only that instead of thrash sentiment, it is firmly positioned within the repertory work.
If the goal of a comedy, and it is, is to entertain and make the viewer laugh first, "Little Budo" is one of the best comedies this year. As an analysis of mentality, the work does not reach the dark precision of the works of ivko Nikoli, but unlike Nikoli's films, which could hardly have taken place outside of Montenegro, "Mali Budo" would have done equally well in any country.
