"I'm a Palestinian American. . . . I've been living in Malden for the past 30 years. The reason I'm here in Malden is because I was in the first uprising, the Israeli army attacked our mosque where I was praying the Friday prayer. They started shooting tear gas and rubber bullets in the prayer room. We had to jump from the second floor. I broke my backbone. So my brother was here. My mother decided to send me back here to America. That's the only reason I'm here in the US, so it's crucial for Malden to ask for a ceasefire. ... Every single Palestinian, Arab and Muslim feel deeply frustrated, a great sense of anger, sadness. Every single Palestinian right now knows someone that has been killed. Every single Palestinian is a part of a story of displacement or destruction. Every single Palestinian has a relative that's either missing a limb or a loved one. Every single Palestinian in the world is traumatized by this and in some ways being outside of Palestine being away from it all hurts even more because you see your people being killed and starved and brutalized, and you cannot do nothing about it. It feels like it's a return to some of the days after 9/11 - the dehumanization, the feeling of complete disregard for our humanity at the level of government, at the level of media, feeling of an increase in surveillance, the feeling an increase in bigotry, people are losing their jobs and people are being berated on campuses, in grocery stores and people are being killed. We also as Palestinians refuse to be cornered in a position where we are told condemn acts of violence and not to speak about the violence that's committed against us here and abroad. By the way, 67% of the country wants a ceasefire, 3/4th of the Democratic voters want a ceasire, 69% of Independents want a ceasefire. Half of the Republican votes - 56% want a ceasefire. You might call yourself human rights crew progressives. Maybe the term rogressive stops when it comes to Palestine. Progressive for everything except for Palestine. Where are all your notions for social justice? Ceasefire now, please."
