Newspaper Guide

Malden Public Library has been digitizing local newspapers, and we are so excited to share them with our community! We are continuing the digitization process, so be sure to check in occasionally for new digital issues.

These were scanned automatically by our microfilm machines. Because of the automated nature of the scanning, there are occasionally missing pages, difficult to read pages, duplicate pages, and so on. No need to worry: you are able to access the original microfilm during Local History Hours and adjust settings so that you can read any troublesome pages you may find on this site. If you are unable to come in person, send us an email and we will do our best to get the information you need.

Once you've found an article you'd like to read, note the line below the article description. 

It should look something like this:

News. October 1, 1885. P1 C5.

Here's what each piece means:

News = Malden Evening News

October 1, 1885 = issue date

P1 C5 = Page one, column five.

You might find different abbreviations for different newspapers. Here is a list of the abbreviations and their full names:

News = Malden Evening News

Mirror = Malden Mirror

Press = Malden Press

City Press = Malden City Press

Now that you know exactly where your article is, head over to the page of your appropriate newspaper. Find the year, roll, and take a look for your article!
