Malcolm Garbutt is a Senior Lecturer of Information Systems in the Department of Information Systems, Economics and Management Services Faculty at the University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa. Malcolm holds a doctorate in Information Systems from the University of Cape Town, and his research centres on the social and organisational implications of digital technologies, including ICT for development.
Malcolm has a strong foundation in accounting, programming, and information systems. He is very much interested in systems thinking, the philosophy of IS, business intelligence, and business process management. After numerous years in the industry, Malcolm joined UWC in 2020. Malcolm is a Senior Editor of The Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries and a regular reviewer for journals and conferences. He is a member of the Association for Information Systems and SACLA.
Malcolm welcomes students interested in research in the following areas: ICT4D; digital inclusion, the interface between digital technologies and the environment; and the organisational/social implications of digital technologies.
