An knot from my recent paper that my wife crocheted!
I am currently a Hill Assistant Professor at Rutgers University. I finished my PhD under Dr. David Auckly at Kansas State University in May 2025. My current research focuses on equivariant embeddings of surfaces in 4-manifolds. More generally I am interested in various questions in low-dimensional topology ranging from knot theory to gauge theory and symplectic topology.
My fiancé and me making wine at Northstar Winery.
I was born and raised in Walla Walla Washington by two amazing parents/teachers Jean Tobin and Brian Gabbard. After high school I moved to Colorado and got my B.A. from Colorado College. After that I moved to Manhattan KS for my PhD, where I met my amazing wife Adriana Ortiz-Aquino who is also a Mathematician, check out her website here!
Outside of mathematics I enjoy watching tv (a lot of reality tv at the moment), playing with my dog (Luna), reading books, and playing games.
