Malaya Movement is a grassroots organization that seeks to broaden U.S.-based support for the cause of human rights, sovereignty and democracy in the Philippines. Our local chapter is based in Union City, CA.
The Philippines has been deemed one of the deadliest countries in the world for land defenders, journalists and trade unionists. According to human rights groups, the number of killings under the previous Duterte regime, infamous for its deadly war on drugs, has risen to 30,000.
However, since 2016, the U.S. has provided $550 million dollars in military aid to Duterte and implemented paltry human rights restrictions and oversight.
We are calling for the introduction of a Philippine Human Rights Act (PHRA): “To suspend United States security assistance to the Philippines until such time as human rights violations by Philippine security forces cease and the responsible state forces are held accountable.”
We are asking for your support for the Philippine Human Rights Act by signing this petition and adding your name to a list of constituents backing this bill.
Hello, we are Malaya Union City!
Our chapter is based in East Bay, Northern California and neighbored by Fremont, Hayward, and Newark. Referred to as East Bay's Little Manila, Filipinos make up 20% of Union City’s community (roughly 13,000 people), many of whom are migrant workers in the service and retail industries. Our area has popular Filipino businesses – such as Seafood City, Red Ribbon, and Jollibee – where many migrant workers can be found. The large demographic of Filipinos in our area is a strong basis for why we, as Malaya Union City, need to organize here as we fight for human rights and democracy in the Philippines.
We are a local chapter of Malaya Movement USA.
