24. Episode 3 - Meeting Rita Maybe I should have a higher value for the episode that introduced us to one of the better characters in the series, but I was never really riveted by the dangers of Rita discovering the girls were mermaids (maybe because I knew it would work out for the protagonists, as it always tends to do), although finding out Rita was a mermaid as well was a fun moment I suppose.

21. Episode 6 - Dolphin Tale Ah, the ever-relevant David's brother storyline! Did the actor get arrested or something during the season, because he's only present in two episodes, and this one he's somehow the main villain. Why is he here? I guess they did pad the number of people who had speaking roles this season with him, so there's that.

16. Episode 1 - Outcasts So the premiere is interesting. Without having prior knowledge of the H2O world, I'm not sure how hooked I would have been by the opening sequence of this episode to continue watching the season. You'll find later (spoiler alert) that only one of the first 10 episodes even cracks my top 10. The season takes awhile to get going, and Episode 1 is no different. We're not attached enough to the mermaids yet to be sad that they're being abandoned by their pod, and we're not attached enough to Zac to feel bad that he's now a merman. Plus, we hardly know why it's so bad that a merman now exists. However, it's still a good episode and starts the main plot off well.

11. Episode 16 - Truce As I mentioned earlier, I enjoy the episodes where the mermaids and the land boys have to come to a truce and work together on something. This one is especially fun, and I quite enjoyed the underlying Cam & Nixie romantical feelings. side note - I think the editors were planning a Cam/Nixie romance but when Ivy Latimer left the show they had to nix (lul) it.

10. Episode 14 - Battlelines I enjoyed seeing the aftermath of the girls getting caught as mermaids by Zac, and especially enjoyed Zac then trying to use it to gain in school by exposing Rita. And then seeing the panic on Zac's face when the girls try to ruin his secret to Evie is especially fun. All in all a good, lighthearted episode that ties into the main plot.

3. Episode 13 - Betrayal This is the episode that really defines the first half of the season. Really none of the first 12 (outside of 11) are that level of good. Until this one. Seeing the girls FINALLY exposed to Zac is something special, and his reaction is nothing short of great either. Also, Zac and Evie break up here? Even if just for a bit? Perfection! Great episode that sets the tone for the latter half of the season.

2. Episode 26 - Decision Time The finale episode is REALLY good. Although, as I mentioned in my previous post, I don't find Cam to be that villainous of a guy, it is still cool to see Zac and the mermaids unite to defeat his plans and destroy the trident for good. It's a bit of a bummer to not see Zac and Lyla get together in some way, shape, or form, but I guess it does keep the Zac/Evie thing heading into S2 so that's fine I suppose. All in all, hardly anything to complain about. The ending is really sweet, but it's also weird. I was fully expecting to watch the finale, and head into S2 with a COMPLETELY different cast of mermaids, maybe in the future or something. Instead we get some returning characters with some new ones? Confusing stuff. But still really fun to watch, and a good ending to the season.

Anyways, that's my list! I'd probably rate this season around an 8.5-9. There are some slow episodes that don't really have much to do with the main plot, but the characters are likable and make for a good cast with lots of riveting drama throughout. Really would recommend it to anyone on this sub who hasn't got the chance to watch it yet; it's worth your time!

So I just finished up my first watch-through of Mako Mermaids Season 1 (of which I posted an earlier thread about my love for Episode 15) and I have to say it wasn't half bad. I went in expecting it to be a cheap knock-off of H2O but overall I enjoyed the series and the majority of the character drama we got to see. There were some obvious flaws but all in all it was a strong season. I'll be posting my episode rankings list at a later date, but for now I just wanted to post some of my more general thoughts and opinions.

H2O did a brilliant job of writing their villains in a way that they actually had a big impact on the storyline and were treated as bad news from pretty much the beginning of each season. Yeah, S1 may have been weaker at this, but it's truly apparent just how much we're supposed to dislike Sophie in S3 and HATE Charlotte in S2. After the finale, it's clear that Cam is that overarching villain for MM S1, but I can never really find myself actively rooting against him. Yeah, he's got douchey tendencies, and made an idiotic plan against the mermaids and his best friend's wishes, but he did it out of a place of fear and in an attempt to do good, in his mind. I don't buy that he wanted to seize the trident's power for himself, I honestly think that was to build him up as worse than he was more than anything. I don't find myself rooting against Cam hard at all during the season, which made some moments less compelling, but still entertaining.

I HATED Evie throughout the season, but I never really understood why. She comes across as very bitchy and rude towards the mermaids, who are clearly the main protagonists, but doesn't seem to receive much flak for it in the main narrative, and is only really the "oh, should we tell her or not?" afterthought each episode. They could have used her for so much more (I know that they will in future seasons, but I could have used with more evil Evie now).

I guess I'll talk about Zac, too? Zac's fun and interesting the latter half of the season, and it's fun seeing him strife over taking the trident vs. not doing so, but he's so droll even after being transformed, it's kinda hard to get into the plot the first half of the season when he doesn't know about the girls being mermaids yet. It's much more boring then.

Lyla is the outcast of the group and struggles to join forces with her fellow mermaids. She has a fiery personality, which makes her very passionate and determined. Then in later episodes she sees that she has a crush on Zac.

The first season of Mako Mermaids consisted of twenty-six episodes, the first 13 episodes were released on Netflix on July 26th 2013, with the second half of the season released on September 15th, 2013.

Mako Mermaids is a spin-off of the popular TV series about mermaids, H2O: Just Add Water, and for years it has been unclear if season 5 of Mako Mermaids will ever see the light of day. The spin-off first premiered in Australia with the title Mako: Island of Secrets, and its most recent episode aired in 2016. Mako Mermaids follows the story of Zac (Chai Hansen), a teenager who becomes a merman after falling into magic water. While Zac learns how to adjust to being a merman, three mermaids named Lyla (Lucy Fry), Nixie (Ivy Latimer), and Sirena (Amy Ruffle) become curious about human life.

While Mako Mermaids was never officially canceled, no new episodes have been released since 2016, and it has also not been renewed for season 5 yet. Its predecessor, H2O: Just Add Water ran until 2010 and featured the same number of seasons in Australia, which gives some precedence that a renewal may never come. However, Mako Mermaids creator Jonathan M. Shiff made it clear on social media that he has more material planned for the series. In 2015, Shiff tweeted at a fan that following the conclusion of the show's third season, which is listed as season 4 on Netflix, Mako Mermaids characters would return for a movie.

Both Mako Mermaids and H2O: Just Add Water deal with similar themes of characters having to balance the human world with the mermaid world, jealousy, and the idea of who is deserving of power. The Mako Mermaids season 4 finale brings the storyline of the show full circle, and it also ties back to H2O: Just Add Water with the inclusion of Rikki. At the end of the season, Rikki is told that she and her friends H2O: Just Add Water, Bella (Indiana Evans), Cleo (Phoebe Tonkin), and Emma (Claire Holt), can join the pod of mermaids. 006ab0faaa
