Lyla is the outcast of the group and struggles to join forces with her fellow mermaids. She has a fiery personality, which makes her very passionate and determined. Then in later episodes she sees that she has a crush on Zac.

The first season of Mako Mermaids consisted of twenty-six episodes, the first 13 episodes were released on Netflix on July 26th 2013, with the second half of the season released on September 15th, 2013.

Mako Mermaids is a spin-off of the popular TV series about mermaids, H2O: Just Add Water, and for years it has been unclear if season 5 of Mako Mermaids will ever see the light of day. The spin-off first premiered in Australia with the title Mako: Island of Secrets, and its most recent episode aired in 2016. Mako Mermaids follows the story of Zac (Chai Hansen), a teenager who becomes a merman after falling into magic water. While Zac learns how to adjust to being a merman, three mermaids named Lyla (Lucy Fry), Nixie (Ivy Latimer), and Sirena (Amy Ruffle) become curious about human life.

While Mako Mermaids was never officially canceled, no new episodes have been released since 2016, and it has also not been renewed for season 5 yet. Its predecessor, H2O: Just Add Water ran until 2010 and featured the same number of seasons in Australia, which gives some precedence that a renewal may never come. However, Mako Mermaids creator Jonathan M. Shiff made it clear on social media that he has more material planned for the series. In 2015, Shiff tweeted at a fan that following the conclusion of the show's third season, which is listed as season 4 on Netflix, Mako Mermaids characters would return for a movie.

Both Mako Mermaids and H2O: Just Add Water deal with similar themes of characters having to balance the human world with the mermaid world, jealousy, and the idea of who is deserving of power. The Mako Mermaids season 4 finale brings the storyline of the show full circle, and it also ties back to H2O: Just Add Water with the inclusion of Rikki. At the end of the season, Rikki is told that she and her friends H2O: Just Add Water, Bella (Indiana Evans), Cleo (Phoebe Tonkin), and Emma (Claire Holt), can join the pod of mermaids. 006ab0faaa
