You might have already heard about affiliate marketing and were curious to get involved as a way to make money online with a website or blog, for example.
I'm writing this article as an overview of affiliate marketing so that I can explain what is involved and how you could make some good income from working at it.
There is a lot to cover, so I'll be breaking this topic down into a number of separate articles, with this one being the overview version to get things underway.
Like learning some of the things you'll need to know to get started and what things you will need to do in order to begin making money from the work you're undoubtedly going to put into it.
Let's start the ball rolling:
Basically, affiliate marketing is the promotion of a product or service using the Internet as your platform to earn commission on sales generated by you.
There are many vendors with affiliate programs they provide to help them make more sales for their business.
For your trouble in promoting their business, they agree to pay you as an affiliate a percentage commission on each sale you generate.
This is achieved by displaying a special hyperlink provided by the affiliate program of the product of service you have chosen to promote.
The special link is known as an affiliate link. You place this link on a web property, for example a website, blog or one or more social media pages.
The link contains a tracking cookie that tracks the initial click from your website to their shopping c art or sales page so they know where the sale originated from.
The affiliate's job, therefore is to get their web page or social media profile in front of prospective customers, pre-selling the item using cleverly crafted content, called copy writing.
This is the kind of sales blurb that convinces a person they desire to own the product and is something seen everywhere you look in ads, magazine articles and product reviews.
You are probably wondering what is best for you to promote out of physical or digital products, so let's describe the properties of each type.
These are the kind of things that people buy from regular brick and mortar stores or have shipped to them from online stores like Amazon or Walmart, for example.
Household items, furniture, electrical appliances, accessories, clothes, gifts etc all fall under the category of physical items.
These are virtual items that you can't physically touch but you can read or watch on a computer, tablet or phone.
They include ebooks, pdfs, apps, online courses, video how-tos, content creation tools and AI.
There are also any number of services to promote and earn commission from as an affiliate.
These include things that experts and qualified tradespeople can do for you, including repair and maintenance techs, plumbers, electricians, mechanics, financial advisors, book-keepers and accountants, lawyers, doctors, dentists, designers etc.
There are all kinds of professional companies that offer services online that want affiliates to promote.
There is great potential for affiliates to make money by promoting in-demand and lucrative offers.
What you need to do is find a product or service that interests you and that you are knowledgeable about. It should be popular with customers and carry a good commission rate.
Once you have a viable offer, start promoting it by getting eyes on it. That's a whole different set of skills, but it basically requires you learning about traffic generation, either via organic search, social exposure or by paid ads.
As you become successful with your first campaign, you can then expand your portfolio to other products and affiliate programs, ideally ones related to the first one. Then grow a website or blog by posting information and/or review type articles covering as many aspects of the product and its related ecosphere or niche that you can.
It's good to get started by signing up to one or other of the main affiliate networks, which are free to join and provide you with some of the tools you'll need to promote their offers.
For digital products a good place to start is Clickbank, as its newbie friendly and there are lots of offers to choose from in all manner of niches. For physical products, Amazon Associates is a pretty good starting place as the scope is seemingly endless for affiliates.
For services, CJ (formerly Commission Junction) is a long-established and fairly easy network to get involved with.
Just about any product or service that people want, need or use almost certainly has an online presence with an affiliate program associated with it.
The affiliate marketer's main goal is to make as many sales as they possibly can using all the online tools that are available to generate commission paychecks for themselves.
It's not necessarily easy, because if it was, everybody would be doing it! However, it does require a fair amount of work to be put in to reap the benefits.
You'll need to research products, services and their associated affiliate programs to get the best ones that suit you. By promoting things people want can make you money by getting sales for the vendors and everyone is happy!
Just remember the more visitors you can attract to your website, blog or social pages, the greater chance of converting those visitors into buying customers. Learn to write strong, interesting and desire-forming copy that grabs their attention, keeps them reading and gets them clicking your affiliate link.
