Make Writing Studios are learning communities where writers and teachers of all ages and experience levels are invited to explore the world of multimodal composition, find their unique spaces inside of it, and create influential work for audiences who appreciate it. Here, we study what writing truly is in our contemporary world, how it's made, and what it means to create and sustain communities that grow great makers and writers.
Sessions are held for one full week in the summer, and they continue throughout the school year for those that are interested in maintaining their relationship with us. Learn more by having a peek at the curriculum documents provided for each multi-age program below, or review the complete set.
If you're a teacher seeking the opportunity to engage in professional learning, scroll down to learn more. Please contact Angela Stockman with further questions if the responses to those that are frequently asked--included below--aren't helpful to you.

Limited spaces are available for K-5 and 6-12 teachers who wish to attend sessions for professional learning purposes. Our work will be informed by the needs and interests defined by the group in the week preceding the start of our sessions. Lesson studies, pedagogical documentation, and standards-based assessment and grading will be explored beside promising practices that found high quality multimodal writing workshops.
Professional development credit is available with your administrator's approval.
Please explore our program overview here, and contact Angela Stockman directly if you would like to register.
There is no cost for teachers seeking a professional learning experience to attend, but you must commit to the full week, and you must be willing to pay your learning forward to others in the field upon completion of our work together.
The learning and work that we do in our Studio is informed by pedagogical documentation. Stipends are available to two teachers who have an interest in this work, wish to practice it inside of our community, and are willing to share their process and findings with Angela and with other teachers on site during the week that we are together. If you are interested in applying for this fellowship, you may learn more and apply here.
What forms of payment are accepted?
Registration is through Eventbrite, and you may pay by credit card or check.
What if we cannot afford the fee but would still like to attend?
Please contact Angela Stockman directly. Sponsorships are available that cover all program costs.
Are materials provided?
All materials are provided, but writers are welcome to bring those that they prefer, if they wish.
May writers bring their own devices and materials of choice?
Yes, they may. Know that our teachers are not responsible for securing these materials and that no one in the program or at Daemen College will be liable for damages, loss, or theft.
Will you assign writing?
Writers will be immersed in experiences that enable them to generate their own ideas and craft pieces of their own choosing. Invitations will be extended, but assignments will not be made.
Will this experience improve my child's test writing?
It may, but please know that this is not the purpose or objective of this community.
Are snacks provided?
They will not be, in order to keep our space safe for all. Writers will receive water bottles, and they are welcome to bring their own water bottles as well.
My child has an allergy or other medical issue. How will you attend to that?
We will ask that all writers and their families complete the forms in our welcome packet, including a health survey and needs assessment. Teachers will be attuned to these needs each day.
