This OER group project aims to take a critical look at the concept of "The Family" and "Family Values" and analyze how this discursive formations operate for perpetuate existing racial/hetero-patriarchal social hierarchies.
The pro-Family movement, akin to the historical eugenics movement, emerges from scientific racism and revolves around rigid concepts of Normalcy. Both movements focused on shaping biological reproduction and enforcing social norms of the "Normal Family" structure. This eugenic approach aimed to support families likely to produce socially desirable traits while discouraging those likely to produce undesirable traits such as intellectual disability, mental illness, criminality, and deviance. Even today, encouragement to have children based on intelligence can be seen as a continuation of eugenic ideals.
The promotion of the Normal Family was portrayed as a "social hygienic" movement, distancing itself from Nazi-style racism by shifting focus from racial groups to individual abnormality. This shift purported to aim at human betterment but still perpetuated notions of racial inferiority and abnormality, albeit in more subtle forms. Despite claims of neutrality, this population-based thinking continues to shape and maintain conceptions of abnormality and normalization techniques, thereby perpetuating social inequalities and biases.
-What is an OER?-
OER stands for "Open Educational Resources." These are educational materials that are freely accessible and openly licensed, allowing users to legally and freely use, adapt, and distribute them. OER can include textbooks, courses, lesson plans, videos, software, and any other tools or materials used to support learning and education.
Although our OER is open for anyone to learn, we feel University students studying social sciences, social work disciplines, humanities and/or cultural disciplines with an interest in Critical Disabilities covering Sexual and Racial Oppressions, would benefit from our OER information. We happily invite instructors of these disciplines to access information from our site to apply within their course and provide the link for student to view.
Providing in depth information around the language and history of families and the dynamics/structures that have been socially groomed, will allow students to enter the work world with a non-biased lens. It will allow new leaners an opportunity to apply their new knowledge around equity as a normalized practice in their everyday lives to reduce oppression and discrimination.
While absorbing new language around equity, equality, racial and sexual oppression gained from our OER, we want to empower students to advocate for change, to break down barriers and limitations that are created in the world for some and not others.
-Why we did Chose this Format?-
We are committed to making education accessible to all. That's why we have chosen to present our Open Educational Resources (OER) in a website format. Here’s why:
1. Accessibility: A website allows our resources to be accessed anytime, anywhere, and on any device with internet access. This flexibility ensures that learners, educators, and anyone interested in our materials can reach them conveniently, whether they are in a classroom, library, or at home.
2. Usability: Websites are intuitive and user-friendly. Our OER website is designed with a clear and organized structure, making it easy for users to navigate and find the information they need quickly. This enhances the overall user experience and encourages engagement with the content.
3. Interactivity: Unlike static formats like PDFs or printed materials, a website can incorporate multimedia elements such as videos, interactive quizzes, and simulations. These features can enrich the learning experience, making complex concepts more understandable and engaging for learners.
4. Openness: By hosting our OER on a website, we reinforce our commitment to openness and transparency in education. Users can freely access, use, adapt, and share our materials under open licenses, promoting collaboration and innovation in teaching and learning.
In conclusion, the decision to present our OER in a website format aligns with our mission to make high-quality education accessible to everyone. Explore our OER website today and discover how we are transforming education through innovation and inclusivity. 😀
