Since Kerem and Aras [both names changed] have been living in Mainz, they explore the city on weekends. As part of our interviews with queer people with refugee experiences, we had the opportunity to speak with the same-sex couple. They fled from Turkey to Germany and tell us that they enjoy visiting streets with historical buildings. The two pay special attention to old churches, but their interest isn't about practicing religion. In our interviews with them, they explain why they enjoy exploring churches and which places of worship, in their view, are worth a visit.
Aras mentions architectural features: “Most of them are historic. Historical churches and the symbols and the buildings are wonderful. This is why I would like to visit the churches.” On the other hand, Kerem talks about how the old walls have a calming effect on him. When we ask them which church we should visit ourselves, Kerem shows us a photo of the Catholic Church St. Christoph. The church is located just a few minutes’ walk from the Römerpassage in the old town and, like the Church of St. Antonius, where an interreligious event for queer people took place in July 2023, belongs to the katholische Cityseelsorge Mainz.In the contribution on the Antoniuskirche, you can read about the significance that religiosity and faith can have for queer people with refugee experience. However, St. Christoph is a completely different church from St. Antonius. Its appearance alone reveals that this church has a special history – it suffered severe damage during World War II. As the diocese writes, parts of the ruin now serve as “„Mahnmal der Stadt Mainz für die Opfer von Gewaltherrschaft und Krieg” [English: memorial of the city of Mainz for the victims of tyranny and war]. In the publicly accessible part of the church, alongside space for services and events of Catholic and Old Catholic Christians, there is also an exhibition about the history of the church. St. Christoph is one of the oldest churches in Mainz. Kerem experiences his visit as a very tactile experience. He likes to touch the old stones of this church, which was first mentioned in the 9th century. Through this, he builds a connection to past times for himself.
The interest of the two in historical churches becomes even more striking when we talk about the Mainz Cathedral of St. Martin. In addition to its impressive architecture, Aras speaks here about the different people who have been in the churches over the past centuries and experienced various things.

Dom is such a historical place and when I think there are old people, there are other people who lived in different times and they prayed here they came here maybe in Second [World] War, they kept them self here. When we think about this old things, it’s really a good feeling to be there.”

Seit Kerem und Aras [beide Namen geändert] in Mainz leben, erkunden sie an den Wochenenden die Stadt. Im Rahmen unserer Interviews mit queeren Menschen mit Fluchterfahrungen durften wir mit dem gleichgeschlechtlichen Paar sprechen. Sie sind aus der Türkei nach Deutschland geflohen und erzählen uns, dass sie gerne Straßen mit historischen Gebäuden besichtigen. Ein besonderes Augenmerk legen die beiden auf alte Kirchen, wobei es ihnen hierbei nicht um die Glaubensausübung geht. In unseren Interviews mit ihnen erklären sie uns, aus welchen Gründen sie gerne Kirchen erkunden und welche Gotteshäuser aus ihrer Sicht einen Besuch lohnen.
So spricht Aras architektonische Merkmale an: „Most of them are historic. Historical churches and the symbols and the buildings are wonderful. This is why I would like to visit the churches”. Kerem hingegen spricht davon, dass die alten Gemäuer eine beruhigende Wirkung auf ihn haben. Als wir sie fragen, welche Kirche wir uns denn selbst einmal anschauen sollten, zeigt uns Kerem ein Foto der katholischen Kirche St. Christoph. Das Gotteshaus liegt nur wenige Gehminuten von der Römerpassage entfernt in der Altstadt und gehört, wie die Kirche St. Antonius, in der im Juli 2023 eine interreligiöse Veranstaltung für queere Menschen stattfand, zur katholischen Cityseelsorge Mainz. Im Beitrag zur Antoniuskirche kann nachgelesen werden, welche Bedeutung Religiosität und Glaube für queere Menschen mit Fluchterfahrung auch einnehmen kann. St. Christoph ist allerdings eine ganz andere Kirche als St. Antonius. Bereits ihr Erscheinungsbild verrät, dass diese Kirche über eine besondere Geschichte verfügt – sie erlitt schwere Schäden im Rahmen des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Wie das Bistum schreibt, dienen heute Teile der Ruine als „Mahnmal der Stadt Mainz für die Opfer von Gewaltherrschaft und Krieg“. Im öffentlich zugänglichen Teil der Kirche befindet sich, neben Raum für Gottesdienste und Veranstaltungen der katholischen sowie altkatholischen Christen, auch eine Ausstellung über die Geschichte der Kirche. St. Christoph zählt zu den ältesten Kirchen in Mainz. Kerem erlebt seinen Besuch als ein ganz haptisches Erlebnis. Er berührt gerne die alten Steine, dieser erstmalig bereits im 9. Jahrhundert erwähnten Kirche. Hierüber baut er für sich eine Verbindung zu vergangenen Zeiten auf.
Noch eindrücklicher wird das Interesse der beiden an historischen Kirchen, als wir über den Mainzer Dom St. Martin sprechen. Neben der ihn beeindruckenden Architektur spricht Aras hier über die verschiedenen Menschen, die sich in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten immer wieder in den Kirchen aufgehalten und verschiedenes erlebt haben:
