WHAT ARE CATCH BASINS?

Catch basin are part of sewer drain system that helps to drain surface water and pavement run-off. They are built in such a way that even high volume of water enter drainage pipes with minimal overflow.

Improper constructed catch basin can lead to leakage of water that can erode the asphalt sub base resulting in crumbling asphalt around a manhole. Due to high traffic and heavy loads of vehicles that are used in the construction of catch basin & manholes begin to degrade, resulting in cracked concrete or asphalt around them.

WHY DO CATCH BASINS FAIL?

There are many reasons that can commonly cause failure of catch basin or manholes. Few of them are mentioned below:

#1. PIPE FAILURE- Inlet/outlet pipes inside the catch basin have failed which allow water to exit the basin into the soil around the catch basin, consequently softening and eroding it.

#2. SEEPAGE- The water is seeps into the asphalt sub-base causing both erosion and heaving once this water freezes. Consequently causing cracking.

#3. INCORECT INSTALLATION – Improper installation may also lead to the failure of catch basin which means that the sub-base of the basin is inadequately compacted.

#4. CLOGGING- catch basin are often filled with leaves, sticks, dirt, and other miscellaneous objects that block or even fill up the drain pipe leading to failure of catch basin.

WHAT ARE STEPS REQUIRED TO REPAIR CATCH BASIN/ MANHOLE?

#STEP 1- Firstly, there must be an inspection done by professional paving contractor who will tell us how severe the damage is.

#STEP 2- Secondly, the exterior perimeter of the catch basin is saw cut 12”- 24” away from the frame through a cutter extractor and then the asphalt is removed from that particular area to a specific depth.

#STEP 3- In some instances, the bricks can be left in place. In others, the full frame and grate must be taken out. They will be removed along with a few rows of blocks if the casting collapses.

#STEP 4- Our team will install new blocks along with set bricks for improved elevation. We will pour a new mortar that will allow you to block the water out. Then, the frame and grate will be placed back over the casting.

#STEP 5- If it necessary then the entire interior will require mortar to seal joints or cracks in the block to prevent water infiltration.

#STEP 6- Lastly, The 12” – 24” perimeter is then patched with either asphalt or concrete for a finished product. When using concrete it is important to apply a tack coat at the saw cut joint to prevent water infiltration. For asphalt the saw cut is sealed with a hot rubberized crack sealer to prevent water infiltration.
