About the Service:
Maine Code Enforcement Officer Practice Course
Code enforcement is a specialized field of law enforcement that deals with the violation of municipal, county or state codes. A code enforcement officer is responsible for enforcing building and zoning codes; inspecting buildings for safety violations; investigating complaints about unsafe conditions in rental properties; responding to complaints about property maintenance issues; and conducting public safety inspections.
The Maine Code Enforcement Officer Practice Course provides law enforcement officers with the skills necessary to perform these duties while upholding the rights of citizens.
The course covers:
Building Codes: The course describes Maine's building codes, including their purpose and how they are enforced by local officials. Students will learn the structure of Maine's building code system and how it applies to residential and commercial structures in rural areas as well as large cities.
Zoning Regulations: Zoning regulations set standards for what can be built where, as well as how buildings should look on a given lot. Students will gain an understanding of zoning regulations in Maine and learn how they are used to preserve open space and protect property values in residential neighborhoods.
Public Safety Inspections: Public safety inspections help ensure that people living in rented housing units have safe living conditions, such as working smoke detectors or properly placed electrical outlets that don't pose a fire hazard
