Case Assignment: Solve a Traffic Problem
part of McKinsey Forward Program (Forward Advanced Level) on McKinsey & Company Learning Platform (McKinsey Academy)
CASE DEATILS
My Solution
The severe traffic problem in Hustleton City. During rush hours, it takes the city residents an average of around 60 minutes of commuting to get to work from their homes, and they’re getting frustrated. The goal is to bring this average commute time down to 30 minutes within the next 5 years.
Level 0: Severe traffic problem in Hustleton City
Issue A: Inadequate public transportation
Sub-issue A1: Insufficient number of buses and trains
Sub-issue A2: Inefficient routes and schedules
Issue B: Lack of carpooling options
Sub-issue B1: Limited incentives for carpooling
Sub-issue B2: Lack of awareness about carpooling benefits
Issue C: Poor road infrastructure
Sub-issue C1: Narrow roads
Sub-issue C2: Poorly maintained roads
Insufficient number of buses and trains (Sub-issue A1): This sub-issue is related to inadequate public transportation, which is one of the two main issues that we identified earlier. If we can increase the number of buses and trains, it will encourage people to use public transportation more often, reducing the number of cars on the roads and easing traffic congestion. This sub-issue is also relatively easy to solve, making it a good candidate for prioritization.
Limited incentives for carpooling (Sub-issue B1): This sub-issue is related to the lack of carpooling options, which is the other main issue that we identified earlier. If we can provide more incentives for carpooling, such as reduced parking fees or tolls, it will encourage people to carpool more often, reducing the number of cars on the roads and easing traffic congestion. This sub-issue is also relatively easy to solve, making it a good candidate for prioritization.
