Documentation and Community Engagement
In 2021, we started the exploration of Iban woven fabric in Kapuas Hulu by visiting several villages and connecting with local communities while trying to find remaining weavers across villages. Mahakarya Tenun has explored the weaving patterns and techniques, also the existence of weavers in 12 villages such as following; Lauk Rugun Village, Sungai Utik Village, Kulan Village, Sadap Village, Ngaung Keruh Village, Kelayam Village, Kedungkang Village, Tekalong Village, Tematu Village, Sumpak Sengkuang Village, Libung Village, and Sumpak Layang Village. This exploration aims to investigate the initial picture of the unique potential and challenges faced by each weaver and provide guidance for the future programmes carried out by Mahakarya Tenun or alongside other institutions collectively.
Ecotourism: Weaving Residency
Kapuas Hulu is a regency in Indonesian territory on the island of Borneo, which holds one of the oldest tropical forests in the world (140 million years old). Approximately, there are 49 Iban villages that still maintain their weaving culture while conserving the forest to supply their weaving raw materials. Iban woven textile is a beautiful fabric that crosses the dimensions of life in the past and present, the earth, and the heavenly world. Ancestral works are made by female cultural patrons who are committed to keeping the tradition alive.
We offer residencies for everyone interested and enthusiastic to learn directly with weaver maestros from several villages, building a connection to the rich nature of the tropical forest and Iban culture. Enhance your skills and imagination by recognising and learning the creative process of creating five weaving techniques: sidan, pileh anyam, pileh selam, ikat, and sungkit.
