In this meeting, we celebrate Magnus’ groundbreaking 1954 paper "On the exponential solution of differential equations for a linear operator" (CPAM 7 (1954) 649). It addressed a fundamental question within applied mathematics: the computation of the logarithm of the operator/matrix-valued solution to a linear initial value problem, which triggered numerous past and current developments in the mathematical sciences. Over the past 25 years, the Magnus series has garnered substantial attention in pure mathematics, owing to its rich geometric, algebraic and combinatorial structures. The objective of this meeting is to establish a platform for presenting and discussing the complete spectrum of mathematical developments rooted in Magnus' seminal work.
* The background picture shows the first-, second- and third-order terms in the Magnus series, denoted using planar rooted trees (taken from A. Iserles, "Expansions that grow on trees", Notices Amer. Math. Soc. 49, no. 4, (2002), 430.)
