Keith Peter discusses how people need to accept failure and see it as a beneficial part of life. He talks about what our current views of failure are and how we need to change our perspectives. He says that failure is an opportunity to “learn, explore, and improve.” Failure is a key component to success and we should teach this to our children.
Jim Harshaw is a father of four children and he talks about why he teaches his children to fail. He says that, “Failure is an inevitable part of life” and that it is “a necessary step on the path to success.” He discusses why failure needs to be taught at a young age so that kids have the tools to learn from their failures and become successful. He also mentions that many famous people have dealt with failure and have become incredibly successful because they never gave up and learned from their failures.
Cordell Steiner is a 3rd grader whose classroom uses individualized learning and Failure as a Learning Mode. The kids in his classroom are able to work at their own pace and understand that their failures have a purpose. These students realize that when you fail you are able to keep working at it until you master the skill.
In this interview with Amy Edmondson, a professor at Harvard Business School, they discuss Edmondson’s thoughts on strategies for learning from failure. They discuss the many obstacles that prevent people from learning from their failures including the blame game, false dichotomy, and how people don’t practice the skills that help us learn from failure. They also discuss a case study involving the Columbia Space Shuttle Explosion and how failure was analyzed before and after the event.
