EDUC 7: Technology in Teaching and Learning 1 – A Reflection

EDUC 7, Technology in Teaching and Learning 1, was not simply a course; it was a life-changing experience that changed how I understand teaching and the important role technology plays in modern education. Entering the course, I knew a basic term about educational technology, but my vision was limited to PowerPoint presentations and online quizzes. The course expanded my perspective, I learned many new tools and teaching methods that can change how students like me will learn.

One of the most significant learnings came from the course's emphasis about the implications of technology integration.  It wasn't enough to simply use technology; we had to understand why we were using it and how it could enhance, not replace, the teaching and learning practices.  The course challenged the notion that technology is a cure for all educational challenges. Instead, it stressed the importance of thoughtful planning and alignment between learning objectives, chosen technologies, and the specific needs of us students.  This emphasis on intentionality shifted my approach from a technology-centered to a student-centered perspective, urging me to prioritize the learning experience above all else.

The exploration of various technologies themselves was another important part of the course. We went beyond the familiar tools and explored a wide range of software and applications designed specifically for educational purposes.  Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Moodle and Canvas, interactive whiteboards, educational game platforms like Blooket and Kahoot!, and digital storytelling tools became not just names, but functional instruments in my pedagogical toolkit. This hands-on experience was invaluable; simply reading about these tools would not have provided the same level of understanding and confidence in their practical application. The opportunity to experiment with different platforms and assess their effectiveness in different contexts proved particularly insightful.  I discovered the strengths and limitations of various technologies and learned to select the most appropriate tool based on specific learning goals and student needs.

Moreover, the course fostered a deeper understanding of digital citizenship and ethical considerations related to technology use in education.  We discussed the importance of protecting the privacy, ensuring equitable access to technology, and promoting responsible online behavior.  This awareness is important in today's digital world, as we future educators are not only facilitators of learning but also guardians of our student digital wellbeing someday. The potential for misuse, cyberbullying, and the spread of misinformation highlights the importance of integrating digital citizenship education into the curriculum.  The course encouraged me to adopt a proactive approach, including applying about online safety, responsible social media use, and ethical digital practices into my everyday living.

Furthermore, EDUC 7 provided a platform for collaborative learning and professional networking.  Working with peers on projects, sharing resources, and engaging in discussions enriched my learning experience and broadened my perspective.  The collaborative nature of the course mirrored the collaborative learning environments we are encouraged to create in our classrooms.  It highlighted the power of peer-to-peer learning and the value of professional development communities.  The course emphasized the importance of continuous professional learning, encouraging us to stay updated of the ever-changing world of educational technology.

In conclusion, EDUC 7 significantly impacted my understanding of technology integration in teaching and learning.  It moved beyond the basic use of technology and explored into the teaching methods, ethical considerations, and practical uses of various educational tools.  The course's emphasis on intentionality, student-centered learning, digital citizenship, and collaborative learning has equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively integrate technology into my teaching practice and create engaging and impactful learning experiences for my students in the future.  It has not only expanded my pedagogical toolkit but also instilled in me a commitment to continuous learning development in this rapidly evolving field.  The learnings from this course will undoubtedly shape my teaching career in the future.
