Bad Beat RPG Poker
Game Design Intern for Varisoft Co, Ltd. in Bangkok, Thailand:
Bad Beat RPG Poker is a 2D Texas Hold’em Poker game that provides players with innovative social mechanics directly related to actions taken in real-life poker!
Players can banter, bluff, and gain pressure, as well as show and give "tells". All of these elements work in tandem to gamify the core experience of poker into a strategic and exhilarating challenge! Distinctive player stats allow players to battle with diverse play-styles!
Bad Beat's Game Mechanics:
In Bad Beat, the player takes the role of an anthropomorphic dog residing in a sketchy city, where the only way to gain respect and luxury is to emerge victorious in Poker Battles with other dogs!
This game features Texas Hold'em poker with a classic poker deck, but also integrates Gambler Stats that manipulate Wealth, Luck, Intuition, and Threat, letting players bend their opponents to their will! Players can also take social actions, including Bantering, Bluffing, Calling Bluffs, and using Social Abilities, causing their opponents to gain Pressure and give Tells about the quality of their hand.
By forcing an opponent to show a Tell, a player can decipher the quality of their hand! Opponents who show a negative tell, by frowning, will have a
weaker hand than the player. With this knowledge, the player might choose to bet more aggressively!
Likewise, if the opponent shows a positive tell by smiling, they will have a stronger hand than the player! In that case, it might be more advantageous for the player to fold or to bet with minimal risk!
By winning battles, players will receive Cash and Experience Points that will contribute towards increasing their overall power in Poker Battles!
Through buying equipment and leveling up, players can decide how they want to specialize their dog character! They can freely choose to prioritize certain stats to be stronger in certain areas of the game!
This allows for a wide variety of unique play styles that offer novel diversity within Poker Battles!
Bad Beat also supports multiplayer servers, allowing players to battle and get stronger alongside their friends! While each Poker Battle against bots is a duel, players also have the option to challenge each other to friendly battles with up to four players!
The open-world level map serves as a lobby,
allowing players to check in with their friends at
any time! And by heading to a pub, players can test
their new skills and strategies against one another!
My Responsibilities Through Development:
During my 8-week on-site internship in Bangkok, Thailand, I worked with a Thai game programming intern to create Bad Beat RPG Poker from scratch in Unity 6. We were assigned to develop a new "Poker RPG" game for research and development, exploring the viability of a "Poker RPG" as a concept.
This was a thrilling challenge for me, and I feel that my education and game-making knowledge prepared me well for this incredible opportunity!
I started my position by creating three potential game concepts to match the "Poker RPG" prompt, and my concept, titled "Bad Beat RPG Poker", was chosen by my supervisor to move forward!
After our original vision was determined, I then created a 61-page game design document, data spreadsheets, and a gameplay loop flowchart! I made sure to effectively illustrate my game idea to the game programming intern and the higher-ups, so everyone would always be on the same page!
As development continued, our team also experienced the loss of a third intern who was originally assigned to the team as an artist. Despite this loss, I adapted to the new challenge by taking it upon myself to also create all of the artwork within the game, striving to still deliver a polished product!
By creating an Art Pipeline, I was able to keep the scale and animations consistent through all characters, making in-engine integration a breeze!
In total, I worked on all of Bad Beat's Game Design, Level Design, Artwork, and Sound.
I am incredibly proud to present this work, as it is a true labor of love for me, and I am confident that my work on this game is a strong representation of my capabilities in a professional game studio environment!
