The International Conference on Monsoon Asia English Education 2024: The Local Practices of CEFR
Monsoon Asia, a region shaped by monsoons, extends across Northeast Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia, with a population of around 4 billion, making it one of the world's most populous regions. The natural and cultural landscape here is rich and varied due to the seasonal shifts between winter and summer monsoons, creating distinctive climate and rainfall patterns. The monsoon is not only a meteorological phenomenon but also a historical witness. Ancient mariners depended on monsoon winds to facilitate transoceanic trade and cultural interactions, driving prosperity and interconnectedness throughout history. However, as times change, Monsoon Asia faces new challenges. The region's countries are becoming more intertwined politically and economically, presenting both obstacles and prospects that they must address collectively. Education has emerged as a common priority among Monsoon Asia countries, especially regarding foreign language instruction, where English is a crucial medium for international communication. Nowadays, varying standards and assessments in English education present significant challenges in the region's educational framework. To address this issue, the National Institute of Education Research is organizing the "2024 International Conference on Monsoon Asia English Education" (MAEE-2024) with the theme "The Local Practices of CEFR." The conference gathers experts and scholars from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, and other regions to discuss the adaptation and application of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in Monsoon Asia countries. The focus will be on how CEFR can enhance the quality of English education. Through speech and panel discussion, participants will share experiences and practices in implementing CEFR, discussing their effectiveness and challenges. The goal is to identify more effective teaching methods and assessment standards for English education in the Monsoon Asia region. This conference serves as an academic exchange platform and the beginning of collaborative efforts. Amidst globalization, Monsoon Asia countries aim to work together to advance education and contribute to the region's development and prosperity.
