Corpus, Meaning, and More Than Just Meaning
Abstract:
Language is more than just a system of meanings; it is a complex interplay of shared knowledge, direct expressions, and hidden implications that shape communication. This talk explores how corpora and digital language analysis help reveal the nuances of lexical semantics, pragmatic usage, and the subtle differences between explicit and implicit meanings. Drawing on research in corpus linguistics and cognitive linguistics, we will examine how learners and native speakers understand meaning, reach agreement, and form interpretations in various contexts. Through examples of common language patterns and unexpected linguistic discoveries, this session aims to highlight the often-overlooked dimensions of meaning that influence comprehension, interaction, and linguistic dynamics.

Beauty Within
Abstract:
This academic lecture, titled Beauty Within, was delivered by Ms. Liu and centered on the integration of English picture books into language instruction and character education. Drawing on three emotionally compelling texts—Little Beauty, Where the Wild Things Are, and We’re All Wonders—Ms. Liu demonstrated how meaningful reading activities can foster both linguistic development and the cultivation of empathy, critical thinking, and creativity in learners. Emphasizing the pedagogical value of picture books beyond vocabulary and grammar practice, she illustrated how story elements, perspective-shifting, and creative extensions such as alternative endings or character letters can support deeper engagement and student output.
A key component of the lecture was the strategic application of Bloom’s taxonomy to formulate tiered questioning techniques that guide students from lower-order comprehension to higher-order analysis and creation. Ms. Liu shared real-world classroom examples to show how these methods promote structured cognitive development and scaffold learner progression. She also highlighted her experience in online English instruction in remote areas, advocating for educational equity and student-centered learning. Her approach showcased how picture books can serve as powerful tools in bilingual education, not only facilitating language acquisition but also promoting social-emotional growth.
Overall, the lecture effectively bridged theory and practice, offering both practical strategies and theoretical insights for educators. It provided valuable directions for curriculum design and teacher training, and was met with enthusiastic response from participants.
