MBA Constitution

Article I (Name)

The name of the organization shall be Madison Basketball Association (MBA)


Article II (Objective, Aims, or Purpose)

It shall be the purpose of MBA to promote quality basketball, sportsmanship, and good cheer.


Article III (Membership and Eligibility Criteria)

Section A:

Membership into the MBA is to be determined by a vote of the Executive Board. Each player shall be nominated by the Director of Personnel and must receive 60% approval to grant entry into the MBA. Shall 60% of the


Article IV (Voting)

Section A:

A quorum will be two-thirds of members present.


Article V (Officers)

Section A:

The MBA shall have a President, Director of operations, Director of personnel and/or Director of finance, and Advisor (MBA may choose not to have officers at all but to have team leaders of equal standing and operate on a consensus mode). These officers comprise the Executive Committee or Board.

Section B:

All officers must be members of MBA.

Section C:

The term of office shall be from January 1 to December 31.

Section D:

There shall be no elections. The President may appoint his successor in order to adhere to the Platonian concept of a philosopher king. A philosopher king is a ruler who possesses both a love of wisdom, as well as intelligence, reliability, and a willingness to live a simple life.

Section E:

Any officer may be removed from membership by a two-thirds vote of Executive Board. Any officer removed may appeal to general membership. Said officer shall be considered reinstated with two-thirds approval of the members.

Section F:

Any vacancy which may occur in an office shall be filled by appointment by the president pending ratification at the next group business meeting.


Section VI (Duties of Officers Defined)

Section A: The President

  1. The president shall be the chief executive officer.
  2. The president shall appoint all directors and committee chairs.
  3. The president, with approval of the executive board, directs the budget.
  4. Vacancies in offices will be filled by appointment of the president.

Section B: Director of Operations

  1. The director of operations shall be the parliamentarian for the organization.
  2. The director of operations shall assume the duties of the president should the office become vacant, or in the absence of the president.
  3. The director of operations will keep and have available current copies of the constitution and bylaws.
  4. The director of operations will be responsible for all scheduling

Section C: The Director of Personnel

  1. The director of personnel shall be responsible for keeping the minutes of all meetings and the meetings of the executive board.
  2. The director of personnel will provide a copy of the minutes for each officer and keep a master file.
  3. The director of personnel shall maintain a complete and accurate account of attendance and membership status.
  4. The director of personnel shall be responsible for obtaining a insurance waiver and photo release form from all players prior to the first game.

Section D: Director of Finance

  1. The director of finance shall keep a current record of all financial transactions.
  2. The director of finance shall develop quarterly reports containing a list of all receipts and disbursements and distribute them among the membership.
  3. The director of finance will be responsible for checking the accuracy of all bills and invoices and paying them correctly and on time.
  4. The director of finance shall be responsible for collecting league fees, either from captains, or from individuals as his discretion. Any person who does not pay league fees prior to the beginning of week three and plays in the game, shall result in an automatic forefeit for the unpaid person’s team.
  5. The director of finance will perform other duties as directed by the president.
  6. The Director of personnel/director of finance position may be combined if not enough members are interested assuming positions on the Executive Board.

Section E: Advisor

  1. The advisor shall assist the group in their execution of roles and responsibilities.
  2. The advisor shall provide feedback to the organization regarding its operation and functioning.
  3. The advisor shall serve as a resource.
  4. The advisor should provide advice upon request, and also should share knowledge, expertise, and experience with the group.
  5. The advisor will be a nonvoting member of the organization.


Article VII (the Structure of Group Committees)

Section A: Committee Identification and Appointment

Committees (other than Executive Board) shall be appointed by the President subject to ratification by the organization during a regular business meeting.


Article VIII (Notice of Meetings)

Section A: The times for regularly scheduled meetings shall be:

At least two days’ notice shall be given for each regular business meeting.

Section C:

Special or emergency meetings may be called with less than one days’ notice by Executive Board.

Section D:

The meetings shall include a quorum, order of business, and disposition of minutes.

Article I

Amending the Constitution


1. Changes to the MBA Constitution are subject to a 2/3 vote of the Executive Board.

Game Length: 4 quarters

Quarter Length: 12 minute quarters

Game Time: 6 and 7 or 7 and 8 (dependent on availability)

Clock Management: Running clock except for the last 2 minutes of each half, last 10 seconds of 1st and 3rd quarters

Timeouts: 4 total, no more than 3 in a half

Referees: 2 most likely

Fouls: 6 fouls

  • 7 team fouls per half = 1:1
  • 10 team fouls half = Double Bonus

Subs: Ranked subs by draft round

  • Injury/Full Year sub - All managers weigh in

Ejection = Miss the next game (not elgible to be subbed)

Playoffs: 4 Teams, division winners and two wild cards

Scorekeeping: TBD

Technicals: 1st = Warning, 2nd = Miss first half of next game, 3rd = season banishment

Champions: T-Shirts, Mugs, Medals, Stickers??? TBD
